Prayers for a good friend and fellow hunter
wooly replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
That's tough. You just never know what's headed our way with each new day. Hope your buddy and his boy make a full, speedy recovery, and can get back to enjoying life soon. -
Happy anniversary! 5 months separated from old stinky butt....... good for you!
-
Get a room you two,lol I can't think of a better inspiration in someones lives than me! Welcome to the site, and good luck with the antlers this season.
-
I'd spare myself the heart attack or paralyzing fall.

Ahem...... you might know him better as Stewie.
-
Congrats! I rotated it for you.

I don't even bother hanging them any more unless I have something else to do and need to get the carcass up out of harms way. I'll gut them in the field where they fall and pour out any pooled blood.... after a few quick pics of course. The drag home usually takes about an hour. I'll set them up for a few more pics at home before I toss him in the back of the truck and haul him down to the processor. Once we get to the processor, he gets pulled out of the truck and layed on the floor of the shop, where he'll stay until they get him on the hooks for skinning. Once they get him pealed out of his jacket, he's laid back on his side and cut into pieces and packaged on the table. Hang time is good for punts and kickoffs, but not necessary for dead deer IMO. I prefer to get him from field to freezer ASAP rather than dilly dick around hanging him for a short period of time that comes with no benefits unless conditions are ideal, so that's pointless for me. I usually get them back and in the freezer within 12-24hrs from the time of kill depending on drop off time, and day of the week.

I'll be out there. First year in a while I'll have a buck tag left for the late season. Looking forward to it!

There's only one man that truly knows how to "drive deer", and he's not a hunter!

Haha- couldn't resist! Cheddar dogs,lol

Happy B-day!

Healing up pretty good now. I didn't get it closed up good enough that first day and it opened back up when I put a new dressing on it the following day. Best to leave it open at that point to dry out and hope for the best. Might have a little scar there, but I'm ok with that. Makes me look tuff, lol LMAO- you caught me.... "red handed"!

Would You Support a Blaze Orange Compromise?
wooly replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Deer Hunting
It's a no for me. Sometimes when I get in my stand I'll take my orange off just because I feel out of harms way up there., my vest is noisier against the tree than my fleecy under layers, and most of all because I CAN. I could see that being in violation if it were to be mandatory, and I can do without that kind of hassle over a dress code. I never touch the ground without it though. -
Sorry, I'm going a little over budget with my idea but felt it might be worth mentioning anyhow. How 'bout an affordable pair of binos he can use year round for deer hunting, bird watching, shed hunting, scanning the treetops for fruits and nuts....., or checking out the cute little blonde 3 doors down!. These work great for all my outdoors adventures. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Nikon-Action-8x40-ULTRA-WIDE-VIEW-Binoculars-Index-Prisms-7268-8x-Closer-/380980858878?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58b43a8ffe

Yes, that is a bit much..... which leads me to believe there is something else going on there where he wants to make his presence known he is keeping an eye on the way he should.

One minute everyone here is complaining there are not enough ECO's to properly enforce game laws and ECO's are seldom seen in the field. In the next breath, when you do see them out and about, it's a major inconvenience that may require intervention from his superiors. You guys crack me up and I'm usually the one making jokes, lol

Who's the guy in the picture? He looks like a pretty happy fella to me with that deer! Tell him congrats on a fine buck, hunt, and a pretty cool story that goes along with it. I'm not sure what the heck YOU'RE beating yourself up over. You should hang out with that guy in the picture more often. He seems very positive and likeable while you're so negative, lol
-
Yep, I'd take that one. I'd probably wait for him to offer the "Texas heart shot" so as not to ruin the hide. ...almost forgot!
-
Ok fellas, fess up,lol
-
....and then when he got back to his deer, he cut the other antler off and put a consigned doe tag on the carcass and will return tomorrow for a bigger buck!
-
Oh man do I ever love a post where we get to use our imaginations and let them run wild! Here's what I think could have happened... New guy to hunting shoots his first buck, and he's so excited! He fills out his tag immediately and sticks it in his pocket.(per law he's not reqired to attach tag just yet) He proceeds to gut the animal moments later just the way he read it was supposed to be done on line. He then realizes he forgot a piece of rope, or a drag to get this carcass out of the woods and he begins to panic someone else will steal his kill if he leaves it abandoned... he also read that on line, lol So his next step is to try to salvage the antlers by hacking them off before he realizes he just cut off a dragging handle and maybe he should save the entire head. He packs up his saw and the one antler he cut loose to show everyone back at home when he finally comes to the conclusion he has no idea what he's supposed to do next. He marks his carcass kill location with his orange vest to make sure he can find it when he returns with help to get his deer out. He gets turned around on his way back to the truck and what should have been a 15 minute hike turns into an hour. When he finally reaches the truck and sees his cell phone battery is dead, he proceeds to make the 40 mile trip back home to see if his neighbor can give him a hand getting his trophy back home. 4 hrs later he makes it back to his kill with help.. ..... stranger things HAVE happened before we all start jumping to conclusions!

I'd say its definitely not an age indicator. Here's a shot of a button buck I took 2 falls ago with a dbl throat patch. It made him easy to identify from the rest of the seasons yearlings, and would have made him easy to follow along with when he grew his first antlers, but I never saw him after that season.

Do us all a favor and stick to your public land spots. If you can't follow a very simple rule there, I don't expect you would be very considerate of a landowners request of how he would appreciate you behave on his private property. Public land is shared by many other outdoor enthusiasts year round outside of hunting season. By giving other groups the wrong impression of how hunters treat the land that has been set aside for everyone isn't going to do any of us any good. Guys with your "who gives a shit" attitude don't usually last long on private land before they're sent packing and that should piss off anyone who's ever been denied access due to landowners perception of how "hunters" treat land that is not their own.

That looks like a shot from opening day on public land! You sure you didn't get your pictures mixed up Red?

Wow- that's just what I was afraid of. That's the kind of reply you get when a guy has a cold wet muzzle down his pants for too long. Now let the innocent snow covered poodle free Pygmy, and go clean that peanut butter off your zipper!
