People suck.... Local gun shop robbed
moog5050 replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in General Chit Chat
Hopefully fully insured. If the thief only had access to a 3d printer and the program none of this would have happened. Sorry to make light of it. -
I represented a manufacturer about 8 years ago that bought I think a 3 axis lathe to manufacturer receivers for Mossberg or Remington, I forget. It never worked right and we won a judgment approaching $1mm. Put the machine manufacturer out of business. Last I heard, that machine was just a big paperweight. I actually understood that stuff at the time. Our expert was a guy out your way Jeremy that worked for or with moog - Brian Argauer (smart dude as he was even able to teach me).

Interesting. I didn't realize the printer builds it up vs removing material. Is the level of user input the same? In other words, with the right program, could I without any real knowledge but the right program build a receive in either?
-
My knowledge of machine tools is limited but what is the difference between a printer and CNC machine. Does one need more input on the CNC? I assumed both rely on a program and simply build based on the program input.
-
Didn't realize they were one and done. That limits the use of these types of gun. Now if an inexpensive metal printer came out, it may be more of a concern.
-
So I should be able to learn it in a week or so!
-
Problem is that you really can't "long arm" in the photo
-
I am not that skilled. Its a single shot. Full auto would require a complete weekend to fab.
-
To save some money, I used generic on most of the gun, but the receiver is made of real legos so it should be fine
-
Considering you are so tall, I would say that bass was over 30" by the proportions. Well done tacks.
-
wooly should stick to his crude media and stay away from the much more difficult paint by number system we used. He really is an artist but I don't like to let him know.
-
OK, so I had a few hours last night and fabricated a quick sub moa rifle out of some old pipe and legos. Way easier than I thought. I guess my concerns were unfounded. Who wants to test it out?
-
I am glad to see its finally hanging in place worthy of it! And that is a wee little lad there. That painting is becoming like the dogs playing poker or the singing bass - everyone wants one!

Nomad dropped off a package of Sahlens tonight. A gift from turkeyfeathers. Look forward to trying them. Thanks Jay and Larry!

You may very well be right. I am still trying to figure out who would use this technology. I really don't see the average law abiding citizen spending that money on a printer to make a gun that frankly doesn't compare to one that could be purchased. for less. Maybe Jerkman is right. Some would do it just to say they have built their own gun. Perhaps it is blown out of proportion. I think its more of what it could lead to down the road that bothers me.

Great read John. Thx
-
I know this but the concept still bothers me. It seems like as technology progresses (and this is a starting point) and the process becomes cheaper and cheaper, kids, criminals, etc. will have a much easier time accessing a gun.
-
I like some DIY projects but making a gun is not my plans. I like my fingers too much.
-
Fair point and definitely worthy of consideration. And trust me I am not a liberal beating the drum. Something does bother me about this concept however.
-
So who would you see printing guns if it aint the crooks, FFLs? The report I saw this morning said the gun was printed on a $2000 machine. Just what was reported.
-
LOL - so you support the idea of making it easier for anyone to print a gun? Kinda like saying its impossible to stop the drug trade so why try. I don't buy that either. I already acknowledged that criminals will find a way. But I see no point in making it easier for them. And your right, the law abiding citizen will not print in their basement. That's not who concerns me.
-
Yep. I get it. I just don't want some gang to cough up $2k in drug money for a printer and start printing untraceable gun after gun for criminal use. But I don't claim to know how to stop the flow of information to prevent it.
-
I recognize that most criminals can get a gun if they want regardless. But making it easier for criminal enterprises to make their own untraceable guns just doesn't seem like a good idea. You may very well be right that it is inevitable.
-
Any thoughts on this? I know its been around for a while and people can make ARs with just a bit of knowledge from parts sold on the internet ( or other methods of gun making). As much as I am pro second amendment, not sure I want just anyone to be able to print a working gun in their basement. I assume most on this site would be in support of the group seeking to post specs, but I doubt the wisdom of doing so.

Hotdog thread made me hungry. Quick lunch and back to work.
