  1. One of the proposals with the change in the license structure and prices was to have the license year run from September 1 to August 31 vs October 1 to September 30 as it has been. One of the reasons is because you need last years tag for early bear and archery in the NZ. So I don't believe the start date would change, you just wouldn't be able to fill last years tag the last 4 days of Sept. like previously. I haven't heard much on this recently though. Maybe someone will jump in that knows more.
  2. I use a Havalon Piranta for gutting and skinning and the Victorinox boning knives with the Fibrox handles for processing. I have no complaints.
  3. If you are interested in Colorado check out the DOW website. They have a ton of good elk hunting information on their website.
  4. You can go for well under $2k if you skip the guide and much cheaper then that if you go with a group and split the gas. There is a ton of public land out west. Just do your research buy a tag and go hunt. It doesn't hurt to start accumulating preference and bonus points either if you plant to hunt DIY someday. Four of us went out to Colorado this year for archery elk and had a blast. We had a couple good chances at nice bulls but didn't end up getting anything. With tags, food, and travel it was around $1300 each. I made some gear upgrades before I went which cost a little bit, but those were one time purchases.
  5. I doubt hunting for weeks and only seeing the occasional spike horn would make good TV.
  6. That's true. They are doing something right and they earned it. The show just doesn't interest me.
  7. There are a few shows where the hunters are hunting public land and working their tails off to kill animals. The fact that these two are the big hunting celebrities makes me scratch my head and wonder why. They can only hunt on their farm, in a stand or blind where a monster buck walks by a few times every day. Put them out on a DIY public land hunt and they wouldn't stand a chance. And before anyone accuses me of being jealous, I'd like to admit that I am.
  8. I wonder who pays for the big tour bus with their faces plastered all over it? I've never been able to stomach watching that show. They are just making half hour commercials. And they can't kill anything when they leave the farm unless a guide does everything but shoot their bows for them. You can count the good hunting shows on one hand and that isn't one of them.
  9. What keeps people from poaching and spot lighting to get into the "lucky buck" contest? Doesn't sound any different to me.
  10. I double wrap in plastic wrap and then wrap in coated freezer paper. I label with the date, cut and deer (i.e. doe, 8 point, etc.). It lasts a long time that way, but it is usually gone by the the time the next hunting season comes around anyway.
  11. We have pretty much the same rules at our camp if you were to remove 1 through 8.
  12. So NY has more old and going blind hunters so we should be sunrise to sunset when nearly every other state is 30 minutes before and after? We should be able to hunt when it's light out, and its light out before sunrise and after sunset for a period of time. It works great everywhere else, why not here?
  13. Exactly. And who sits there staring at there watch? I look at it every so often, but I'm not staring at the second hand wondering when it will hit the exact sunset time. And I don't plan on setting my alarm either.
  14. The law should change. NY is one of the last states that has the sunrise to sunset law. Nearly every other state has 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset which allows the hunter to decide to take a shot when they have adequate light. Even if they made it 15 minutes on either side it would be an improvement. People will still take unethical shots when it's to dark like they do now, but walking out the woods when there is plenty of adequate light is ridiculous.
  15. Maybe his head just fell off. He was pretty old.
  16. http://www.sitkagear.com/insight/broken-fall.aspx For some reason when I just went to that link on my computer it was white text on a white background, so you may have to highlight it all to read it.
  17. I think you can get the Bowtech Assassin with the RAK package for around 600 brand new and the Hoyt Charger with their package completely set up for around $700. I know that is a little more than you want to spend but for new bows these are good prices. I haven't shot or held either but the reviews are very good.
  18. Its just another gimmick aimed at the gullible deer hunter. Just get out play the wind and hunt. When I see the commercials for all these amazing new products they always make me laugh.
  19. Walk. Of course I don't own a 4 wheeler, but even if I did I would still walk. The farther the better.
  20. I got the squirt for my Daughter when she turned 4. Unfortunately I got pink, but now that my son is 4 he doesn't seem to mind... yet. http://www.3riversarchery.com/3Rivers+Pilgrim+Youth+Longbow_i2240X_baseitem.html
  21. Yes I checked it out last week. It's pretty good. Nothing like elk hunting shortly after getting shot through the leg with an arrow.
  22. That is what I started with and it is a good bow for the money and a great starter bow. Like anything you will be looking to upgrade before to long, but it is a good way to find out if you plan to stick with it. I'm shooting the Hoyt Buffalo now and it's awesome.
