Penetration is one aspect of it but with the high bow speed you get today not my biggest concern. I worry about how well they function and how well they shoot. My reapers shoot just like field tips

This is why after a few attempts of hunting LI I gave up and started upstate. If you could get on one of those golf course or apple orchards out there wow! Saw some incredible deer .

If you make your way to Putnam I'll take you out small game hunting and point something things to help get you started. 1.)I recommend buying a drop point knife with about a 3.5 inch blade for when you get your deer (No Rambo knife needed). 2.)Throw some zipstrips or safety pins in your back tag for the ear tags. Always bring a flash light. 3.)Throw some pine needles and dirt in a rubbermade tote and a piece of peg board over and throw your cloths on top of it(scent matters) 4.)After the first day the deer that are smart are hiding in the thick stuff 5.)Utilize small game season to get scouting in and to get familiar with the woods 6.)Ignore the (facts) on tv hunting shows they are fake and meeant to sell products!!! 7.)Any more tips from me you better be serving cold ones!!! -

Welcome and good luck. That big 30-06 has a little umfphh that lets you know you after a few huh? ;-) -
Thats because they are all in PA shooting people hahahah ;-)

As long as you were aiming at just on bulls eye :-)

First off, Awesome thanks for sharing. Second, those darn birds are tough as hell!

thats correct, my dad is done in NY. He's strickly PA now but I however will be here for a while.

Don't want to but I currently have tee rex arms so am very limited on my options. I don't really like them but I do what takes to be able to archery hunt. I'm currently working on a swivel arm that I can drill in to tree and set my stabilizer on so I can hold my bow out at arms length. It's not classy but it might work out

Same to you!

NY doesn't do an adequate job of defining hunters w/ disablities as far as archery is concerned and they don't make exceptions. My father who was avid archery hunter for my entire life had to have a spine neck surgery that left him incapable of not just pulling a bow back but holding it out with either arm to shoot thus negating him as a NY archer because the crossbow law. Last year in the middle of archery season I was injured requiring 3 shoulder operations. After hours on the phone with the dec these were the tops suggestions they gave me. 1.)Use a gun 2.)Learn to shoot left handed (I injured both shoulders) 3.)Use the little device that you cock it with your foot and then use you it like a crossbow(Bad shoulders can't hold a bow out) 4.)Crossbow during rifle season 5.)Hunt in PA 6.)Better luck next year! I'm not a pro-crossbow person and this isn't what this is about. It's about the fact this state doesn't help the handicap

GRim reapers legal here and they work great! I've used them for 3 years now with much success. They hit same as my field tips and what I like the most they don't whistle like the fixed blades. I also use fixed blade thunder heads but thats for smaller critters

I'm aware that scents are legal in NY and baiting is a big NO NO but apple scent gel fall under scent or bait? I know that deer cane gel is considered the same as salt block and is therefore illegal. I'm trying to google it now

My first was only about 8 yards away when I shot him (pretty easy to tell), My second was about 100 yds away and when I saw him looking back over my shoulder in a funny angle with my naked eye. That was the last time I saw his antlers until he was dead. I saw clear as day the 3 points on his left side. (I was blessed with a decent size deer or I might have had to take a second look from my postion)

If you rattled or use a grunt be very passive this early because if anything its only light sparring and thats usually the young ones. We need a good frost before they are going to start getting active. I wouldn't use that stuff yet because the deer should still be on the routine for a couple of weeks until we get closer to the rut/mating season. I haven't even really seen much rub or scrape activity by me yet but its still pretty warm here

Everyone keeps talking about counting points and exact numbers etc... You don't need all of that you just have to be aware that it has 3 points on one side. lets count 1, 2, 3. Both of my deer last year I looked once quickly saw 3 tips on one side sticking up then focused on my shot. I didn't know if either of the deer I shot had brow tines or even an antler on the other side of the head but I knew they were both legal if there were 3 pt antler restrictions. Heck didn't even have to count. I could tell by looking with out sitting there going 1............2............3....... ummmmm is there a 4........... Its not much harder than determining if a deer has has horns at all or perhaps a split second longer if its a small legal deer but a larger legal deer will take an instant. Will it make hunting safer or you still going to have individuals shooting at everything even noise. dunno. I doubt it, but it definately won't hurt.

I can't wait to see the fire storm this comment sets off. That being said I agree a 100 %

He's a beauty! I would also say 2.5 years with great genetics and would be amazing in another year but if he came around me I would never let him see another year!

little different for you on public property, but I like to be in my stand 30 mins prior to sun rise and in my stand by about 4pm in the afternoon. Becareful of the bird hunters opening morning. Some of them are insane and light the woods on fire with bird shot!!

Always feels good to see pictures of bucks in the area

Its hunting so there is a gray area or it would be called shooting. The law however reads in black and white so if that means not shooting something that your not 100% on like we could have done in the past, well it can't be chalked up to a honest mistake in the laws eyes even if was just an honest mistake. Or we could all be perfect like me :-) Joking
