Honestly i really appreciate all the advice you're giving me.There were some things here that i never really thought about. Pretty much only going to use it for fishing and specifically fishing in the bay's mostly. I may travel into the sound or off the beaches on the south shore after a couple years of experience. I was thinking of getting some sort of mesh bag or using one of those big clips and keeping any fish i'll be keeping outside of the kayak but still attached to it. I only keep one or two bass a year, so space shouldn't be as limited as i'll be targeting things like fluke, porgies, sea bass and C&R stripers. I was thinking of those hobbie kayaks, but i just can't afford buying one right now, so I'll have to stick with the classic paddle kayaks. As far as sit in vs sit on top, i have waders that I can wear while in the kayak so I figured a sit on top would be fine. Ill also be using it mostly during the summer time when the water is a bit warmer. A good pfd is also a must have in my opinion too, so I won’t be sparing on that either. Nice fish by the way! My best striper is 41.5"

Wow those are some cheap soft plastics. I'm definitely going to have to pick up a few bags the next time I'm in cabelas. Thanks for all the advice. Since you a kayak fisherman, would you have any advice on what kind of kayak I should buy? I've decided to get one for this coming summer to use here in NY and down in FL when I go to my condo. Your right they fight right up to the very end! Im all catch and release on any blues bigger than 2 pounds, but Ill be targeting them until i get to busy with school and hunting. Ill probably only use a popper since I love watching them strike so much! And your right as long as your having fun, size and weight are not important. I tip it with a gulp 4" swimming mullet, but i've heard of people tipping it with a pork rind and they do great on fluke and sea bass. I would love to hear what works for you though! Also a novice fluke fisherman so Ill take all the advice I can. Ill be getting a haircut tomorrow or Friday thankfully.

Appreciate the tip. Didn't think id loose that many rigs so i guess ill have to be creative with what I use for a sinker.

Well greybeard your going to like this one. My organic chem class was cancelled today so I had nothing to do all day so I decided to go fishing. Started off with bottom fishing and picked up a bunch of sea robins and one small fluke. I saw some bunker pods move in so I decided to walk to my car and take out my surf rod that had a popper on it. It's a long walk so by the time I got back the bunker pods were a little too far to reach. I looked behind me after watching blues come up and hit the bunker and saw another school of bunker forming between the pier and shore. This time they were close and coming even closer to shore. One cast and a nice blue came yo and smashed my popper a couple times. Man I forgot how fun it is to watch them fly of the water when hitting a popper. I'd say it's my best blue, but to be honest I'm not sure exactly how much it weighs. I'm thinking around 8-10 pounds but correct me if I'm wrong. For some reason my hair was all messed up when j was taking a pic, but to be honest I was so thrilled to catch it I didn't care. I'll be back there tomorrow afternoon if the weather isn't too bad Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

NZ grows some monster fish! You guys ever see the trout they have? Their average trout is bigger than what most people would consider a trophy.
-
Don't believe he was talking about bow though. I would also find that hard to believe if that was the case, but i don't think it was.
-
There are people that can do better than 1 inch groups at more than double that range. Its entirely possible. The Average shooter probably won't be able to, but some can.
-
It depends on how much ive been practicing through out the year, but pie plate is the absolute minimum. Normally 2" at any range is what i look at, but I've pushed it to 4" for extended ranges with a bow (for me that's 30-40 yards). Maybe now that im shooting more often I can shrink those groups down.
-
Ive heard that there are a ton of snags, so I was planning on going to buy a bunch of weights and tying a bunch of new rigs. Blues on poppers is hard to resist though...especially compared to bottom fishing in a snaggy area. Hopefully they really start coming in soon for you. And after doing the walk from the parking lot to the jetty, ill elect to doing the shorter walk to the construction dock.
-
Thank you so much I really appreciate it! I also was told field 10, the construction docks and the jetty at west end II are good. No way im going to walk that again with all the blackfish gear. I was thinking of parking by the coast guard station and walking to the construction dock. If that's no good, ill move to field 10. Really appreciate the tips and if you want to head out for blackies on October 5th, your more then welcome to join me...ill bring all the crabs we'll need.
-
Appreciate it and will do! Ill be shore bound and not exactly sure what spots will be holding them, so i'm doubting if ill catch any keepers. I hear Jones beach has some decent spots so ill be checking that out for sure.
-
Only ever had it once, but its among my top 5 favorite fish. Never caught one before so im excited to catch a new species. Oct 5th cant get here soon enough!

From what I hear the river fishing has been amazing, but I also suspect a lot of the reports have been played up a bit. In any case the river does have more fish in it already than it had move through in the last season. My advise would be to check out the town pool and trestle pool. Id focus on the town pool all the way down to the DSR boarder. The fish are very fresh so you will definitely be in for a good fight no matter what. Early mornings and late afternoons have proven to be the best times as usual.

Nice blues! I hear the big guys have made their presence known in the north shore. I may go target them one of these days if I have nothing to do. Right now im just ready for salmon fishing and finally go out and fish for blackfish for the first time.

How would you react to this situation? (Hunting permission)

I say you should talk to him again. Now that he has had time to let it sink in maybe you can now have a rational conversation with the guy. Sometimes we all have knee jerk reactions to things and maybe he's not a bad guy after all. -

I think we all would be slightly disappointed with having to share land with more hunters, but in the end of the day its not his land. He has no choice but to accept it, and when he finally comes to his senses he'll hopefully start to work with you so you guys benefit from each other. Good job in not escalating the situation, but he really doesn't have any authority over you. -
I have like 4 or 5 light weight gloves including UA, but I only ever wear them on the hand I hold my bow with. As far as a wrist strap for my release, I haven't really had the need to change to a thumb release so why change whats not broken.
-
How many of you guys wear gloves while bowhunting? I've always avoided wearing a glove on the same hand I wear a release in fear it will effect my POI, but getting cold hands in November can get old real fast. I was thinking f getting some nice wool fingerless gloves so I don't loose the feel of anything.

How did you do today?

I've been reading the reports everyday. River is running at a great level (with more rain to come) and the water is nice and cold. Hopefully there is still a good push of fish by the time I get there, but I find it hard to believe there wont be. Best Salmon run I've seen and they've seen in about 4 or 5 years. All are invited to join me if they would like!
