Ok lets start with the right terms so we're all on the same page. : ) DDP's - These are what most call nuisance permits. One can use these to kill deer by almost any fashion. At night, with rifles in shotgun zones and so forth. DMAP's - These are extra doe tags ,which a farm, town etc. may get. They are 2 per hunter and good only during the season. Then there is DMP. The doe tags we all get ( hopefully). The DDP's seem to be issued in far fewer numbers and they get them in the summer, which is when the farm I hunt fills them.I don't know about using them after the season. DMAPS come out just before the hunting season and are like I said 2 per hunter good only during the season . Both DDP's and DMAP's are issued for damage . I'll check with the farm to see if DDP's are good other times.

phade, you can get them at Biekirks ( spelling?) Linden ave in E.Rochester. Which is a great place to buy guns ammo and so on.Wholesale/retail place.I got my MK 85 for 200 bucks there on close out a few years back.

Fasteddie, again they get 2 NP which they fill and 20 DMAPs which are 2 PER HUNTER . 20 divided by 2 = 10 hunters to fill them, basically guys use the DMAPs not their doe tags . They also share their land, we all get our own area to hunt. Mine they bush hog and mow parts of it for me.I also can build huts, post and basically do as I please . Hector your close. I get 7 tags not 6, 5 between bow and gun and 2 DMAPs. I seldom fill more then 4 or 5 though. I use the DMAP tags for guys I bring down and don't have a doe tag for the area . I like to share as well . 132 8pt. that was a good post. I have questions myself. If the farm I hunt which is around 3,000 acres only gets 2 NP, how is it we hear these stories of piles of deer shot and left to die on small farms with handfulls of NP's. Could it be just that stories ? Some folks say they saw bigfoot or mountain lions in NYS too........ The facts are DMAPs account for 10,000 deer killed per year about 5 % of the whole take and NP's ( correctly called DDP's btw ) about 2% not real high numbers to get worked up over .

Not sure what "land owner permits " are ? As a land owner I get first crack at doe permits( DMP's). NP yes they have to come out and 'look" at damage. Dmaps are extra doe tags used during the season 2 per hunter. These are not DMP which are the doe tags all apply for. Dmap's you have to have damage as well but its just a form and listing amount of land, amount of crops, damage, etc. damage for 3 years and up is "on going" less then that may be verified by the DEC as time permits...... Well i know these guys pretty well, they have the same last name as my wife did. They get 20 DMAPS ( cut down this year ) and 2 NP. I know, i asked if I could use one, so my daughter could "hunt" before she left for college late August. My plan was to stand hunt day time so it would be a more real hunt. I was told " we only get 2,and I use them for my meat ". I've hunted this farm for over 2o years its a big opperation and they rent my 116 acres of farmland. We're on good terms and I'm certin of the numbers. 20 DMAPS and 2 NP. Its is weird when I hear these stories of guys killing 60 on NP and so forth. My understanding is its all up to the "guy" in your area from the dec. It would seem some pass them out a little free'er then others... Larry

FWIW, the farm I hunt is about 3,000 acres, they get TWO nuisance permits. The farmers ,who don't get to hunt much during the season due to well ,farming use them to fill their freezers, a wopping two deer. With some luck they'll get out a handfull of days and whack a couple more. Nuisance permits in NYS account for 2% of the whole deer take a tiny number overall.Heck nice weather on opening day has a much bigger effect on the deer take.

A little late to this... Yes both for sure, however two big factors are time afield and where you hunt. The op said he was out 4 times in gun,as of 12/8/10. Well thats not much time at all,and yes it may be all he has. I've been out 10 or 12 times in that time frame. My farm land is great in bow,but in gun due to neighboring pressure and the farmers plowing all the fields as soon as they harvest its hard hunting. Yet I went to Stueben county and killed a deer in 1 hour on stand and saw 60 -70 in fields at 12 noon !!! Those guys can tag out any day they go to camp........

Heading back this weekend... Any idea how it will be?
Nomad replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Its so much about the area one hunts. My spot in 8H has been slow during gun yet a guy at the gym who hunts a suburb of Roch. (bow only) is seeing tons of deer and bucks running all over !! I just got back from a camp in the Southern Tier took 1/2 hour on stand to drop a doe, the 25th deer taken at that camp this year . We saw around 60 deer in fields on the way home between 12 noon and 1 o'clock . They can't understand how I can't find a deer on the farm I hunt........ -
hunting public land in the Adirondacks worth it? Opinions Please?
Nomad replied to TChunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Well I used to go up to Moose River Plains . It was fun to hunt a " big woods", camp out, rome around all day. So that was worth it ! killing deer ? not so much . So if the joy of being there and the chance however slight of a big buck are enough then go for it. Frankley it seems to me all the deer are in town,Old Forge is loaded with them. My kids and I feed them out of our hands there. Hold out an apple and they run over like a dog to a T-bone.......... -
Ya me I'm going over there with me climber next time. Worked this year in bow . The only call I cary is the can. But he'll lock right in on your tree . Which is why i prefer not to alert him . Most times.......
-
I agree. I can't stand most of them. Drurry Bros. no thanks Stan Potts etc. same, lee and Tiff I like the least. Waddel is funny and he says he never had a rack scored so he gets a watch from time to time. The other night this guys passed on a buck,"give it another year". unless he sees it in late bow, so in late bow he shoots it. It scored 160. Give it another year ?? Lee and Tiff said they are a "working farm" they have something like 400 acres. Then he says he has over 100 fields !!! Um you farm 4 acre fields ???? The farmers in my wifes family all remove hedge rows etc. to make one big field to farm........

I put in lots of time. The wind ? sure when I get there I check it out but often just do what I want. Up the odds ? Hunt more ,hunt better spots . use a climber to move to where you see them . I own one call ( the can) don't rattle, no decoy's , no scent loc, bought my second bow in my 21st year of bow hunting , still have the same camo coat.... Killed 5 last year, 2-3 most years . Put in the time,if have don't have much put in an some extra. Network for better spots. I have guys down to my spot from time to time. Then they have me down.... I guy at work started hunting his in law has a camp where he says they see 30 deer a day all season long. I'm going next week. I think that upped my odds for next week pretty good.

hunting without a truck how do you transport your deer
Nomad replied to Chef's topic in Deer Hunting
Easy I use a Stealth Hunting Vehicle (SHV) aka mini van. No middle seats. Have an extra piece of carpet down, and when i transport deer I put a cheap trap down, open both side doors, left head place inside, walk around go in other door grab head pull deer in . Easy as pie , low to ground means easy lift for one guy . Ride home is 35 minutes no biggie. I love the SHV. i change inside it, have tons of room for gear, and I even sleep in it, easy to get deer in and i've driven it places I really shouldn't. 25 mpg highway. -
So what's so bad about NYS deer management and the hunting season??
Nomad replied to First-light's topic in Deer Hunting
We own over 100 acres of Ag land and i hunt a farm over 20 times that size . As far as DMAPs we get a fair amount ( the big farm), guys use them instead of doe tags not in additon too at least where I hunt. Nuisance permits they account for less then 2% of all deer killed in NYS. A bad weather opening day of gun has more effect on the deer take then that. The farm gets 2 !! and they are close to 3,000 acres. Thats the farmers meat for the season,he's to busy to gun hunt much at all and then its big bucks only. Cutting gun season will hurt hunting like nothing else including the anti's . Most bucks are killed the first week end anyway . My goodness if a bow hunter can't get it done in 4-5 weeks including the rut, his time might be better spent scouting and learning his craft and taking shots at targets not gun guys. Yes i bow hunt love it the most, killed a buck my first year out and most years since . Most bow guys i know pass on does and are waiting for a buck of a certin size. longer bow season would mean more big bucks taken and not much effect on does. -
Right ! My deer go inside my SHV,(Stealth Hunting Vehical) aka a mini van.No deer stickers, camo this camo that. Great for suburban hunting go in wearing LL Bean stuff with a .44 under it once off the road out comes orange vest.....

Not to far from you in 8h . I've hunted this piece of ground well over 20 years, I have it all to myself do very little walking etc. Although I saw TONS of deer and many nice bucks in bow,gun was slow. Lots of driving all around me, which according to what you read should make my thick brush and fields very nice as they all should run to it...... well maybe but they are not moving once they get here !! I did miss a very nice buck with my ML. better buck then I shot in bow and that one is at the taxadermist . Heres my take in years past each woods had hunters in it and the deer were pushed form farm woods to farm woods all day and shot at in each woods. Now we have one or two groups of hunters that move from woods to woods but the deer are pushed to woods with no hunters and they lay low. All I can do is wait for it to slow down and hope they come out in daylight, and sit on the field edges on busy days and hope I catch them crossing at that point.

Well I'm kidding, sort of...... I do love the Fire Balls though ! I did see a ton of bucks as well as kill one with a Fire Ball in my mouth. Beats a pair of 'lucky " socks I guess. Perhaps they should make them in a camo wrapper, sell them in hunting stores for 5x's as much.
-
One in the ML and 3 quick loads ,but since I switched to a ML I never had to reload. On the last week end when we drive parts of the farm I take my shotgun , then I have 5 in the gun and 5 on my belt.

Ok I'm going to let you guys in on the best kept hunting secret.Atomic Fire Balls. My daughter played BB for her high school, I noticed one of the other Dads always had Fire Balls to share. He said he bought them for deer season, they last 20 minutes keep your mind occupied and so forth. So this year i bought a bag, and I saw more bucks then in 30 years of hunting !! Not only that but no matter what time I put one in my mouth a buck would show up before it was gone. I shot my 8pt. with one still in my mouth ! Just be sure in bow to put it on the opposite side of your mouth , so not to mess up your anchor point.......... : Works better then any cough drop too!
-
Oh ya ! Took my bow buck on the 10th, so my woods, fields etc, have been left alone sense then. My clothes are washed my gear all set. My daughter that hunts will be home from college for 7 days. I start a 2 week vaction from work on sat. Good Luck to all !!!

Myself I tie off a rope above my head that hangs to about 6-7 feet off the ground. The lower end is tied to a tree step,on this rope is a Prusik knot that I clip onto one or two steps off the ground. This allows me to be "tied in" while climbing up and down. Seeing as how most falls happen while getting into or out of your stand it only makes sense to be clipped in while doing so ! http://www.animatedknots.com/prusik/index.php

Sam 4 blade 100g. He went much farther then ever happened to me in many years about 250 yards. Put the arrow right behind the shoulder, centered up and down just right. For some reason he left the woods,we were near the edge and went along a hedgerow to an over grown creek bottom. First one I had to track with a cut on contact in years .
-
I was already thinking of gun and my ML in my hand, then 2 days ago I killed my best buck . So really one day can do it. Good Luck.
-
Thank you guys ! I could not be happier . Good luck to all.

Took this 17 inch 8pt 0n 11/10/10 . He was chasing 3 does who blew by me, the buck seemed a little winded and was slowing. I grunted he stopped and gave me a good 20 yard shot. A Stinger claims another one !
