OK, I went to feed the chickens and decided to brave the black flies to build another brush blind. I found the perfect tree ,wide the root space fits my Danny perfect and flat but just a little high . It faces the back of ridge blind ,is half way between the CBB and the ridge and allows for my left handed swing to cover everything between both. That fly down this morning would have had that Bird nearly in my lap . It also.cleaned up the strutting area and the fly down area for them..which could help. It's right where the Tom hung up the other day when I had the decoys out..nice clean 5 yrd trail off the path to it. It's worth a try if he just doesn't mess up their roosting . Didn't hear any shots but then again I was sound asleep before I got my 3rd sip of coffee...12:30 bed up at 3:30..I'm definitely not 40 any more...Lol.

Nicely done!Congrats to both of you!

Man did I call that,he roosted the birds, and then set up 5 yrds from mine line facing me...Lol I had no rain but over cast so the moon wasn't a problem. Went to the ridge brush blind settled in on my over stuffed small dog pillow. It worked perfectly. Got there at 4:30. I stayed quiet waiting for their usual gobbles ,dead quiet. Did They hear me..I had a bunch of leaf shuffling behind me and it was the neighbors son setting up,then a Fox ran through. I heard him on his call and then a single quiet fly down..I had walked right under it and it was in a tree 10 yrds away...had to have been a hen or stayed on our place for the NS was set up just 15 yrds up the hill and maybe 70 from the blind. The fly down was toward him..by 7:30 I had to "go" so very slowly walked past him. I think he thought I didn't see him..what he doesn't know is they won't return until just before fly up. He must have really spooked those Tom's last night no sign of them...the Deer came through with one snoring but still stayed and fed. I know the Tom's. Headed that way to roost last night,I watched them from the house. I'll be back there in the morning ,maybe he'll go home today

Moog..... I hunt from stands and elevated blinds and they come in fine ,that is when they have a mind to. As far as the shot, well standing side ways when your shot hits it's hitting the head and or wing feathers. I've never had a problem with pellets unless I shoot too low and that would happen from the ground as well.
-
moog once you actually find some birds and as time goes by here is the trick to help avoid that "hang up" being out of range Oppss didn't see that, any ways getting to know from what direction they'll most likely show up and set the decoys so they have to walk across in front of you or even past you. So if you had decoys say 15-20 yrds out front and they where coming in and hanging up at 40 - 60 yrds...Then put those decoys off to the side and behind you...then their hanging up lands them in your shooting house.

Half the plot with lime scratched in and planted with med red and Balansa clover. rain due so we will see how it does...the long trail clover trail plot is coming in great now...That took long enough and several hand blisters...may wait to plant the rest to see how this works out...I can always hit it with lime again later and then winter grains and clover in the fall
-
That really depends on how the birds have been hunted/pressured and if they have hens that are running to them...Today I opted no decoys because they hung up the other day with them...Ya because they have had 2 live hens actually moving to them...and those decoy weren't moving at all in the no wind we had. if any thing a feeding hen. Best of luck to you go knock one down!

That would be fine if they still walk down the hill like the last two times...they would have to walk right by me, I don't think they can anymore though. The mature maple have lost the roosting branches. They would literally roost over the blind some mornings. I don't know why I'm worried I have countless times gone in with them roosted there and in the fall it's ridiculous, you'd think they were following me...I'd climb the ladders to the stands and as the sun brightened I'd see I was siting smack dab in the middle of a flock...3 years ago they helped me arrow a buck...as he came in behind and passing me one of the Toms in front of me gobbled. He stopped to look and I put one through his heart. took 2 bounds and tipped over...I almost nocked another arrow to shoot the Tom but I was too excited. Looked again I'm thinking it will just be a sprinkle and nothing more tomorrow...

59% chance of rain tomorrow morning...Do I suck it up and use the cloud cover and the wet leafs to my advantage and try getting to the brush blind unnoticed? The trail is pretty clean. I haven't sat there, so not sure how well my knees will due...It may end up " Help I'm sitting in my brush blind and can't get back up!"...lol They are so dang close I will be sitting in my rain suit on the ground for at least 45 mins against a tree that will have rain pouring down the trunk...longer if they had a rough nite. Think it's doable? If the guys next door decide to hunt I could loose my chance at both...

Wow ...Sorry for the sentence run on the post above. I was in a hurry, wanting to get back out there. Here I am, no bird. I tried a couple of spots, glassing as I went...My bug /bee netting over my hat....I just can't believe these black flies. I also can't believe the amount of deer tracks. a few huge sets...Some pretty tiny tiny ones and a lot of doe. We also have so many new song birds on the place...I noticed that the cardinals are using the brush fences and I allowed a bathroom sized wild rose bush to live. After more than 20 years it died last year and I left it alone...I believe the rabbits living in it girdled it . Now the cardinals are nesting along with a few other birds I'll have to look up wht. breast blk. and wht wings and tail with yellow shoulders and I think some yellow on back...smaller than a Robin..pretty bird. Alas not a turkey...

What was up with that moon this morning...It was like a giant spot light on my back all the way in!...I can't believe I spooked so many deer and not one snorted..unfortunately they moved in front of me and to the ridge brush blind...Not wanting to completely mess up the hunt between the moon spotting me and the deer I made a beeline for the CBB. and of course right where they were before the Toms started sounding off 15 or so mins. later...they stayed on roost until about 5:30 . This because 3 mins. before that I look to my right, having gotten my gun into position and see two hens strolling past at ten yrds headed straight for them..I tried stopping them and that lasted about a minute. Here is the insult...those boys didn't fly down they dropped out of their respective trees and landed, wait for it, 2ft in front of the ridge blind and I had to watch while the 2 of them stayed in for fan strut and then the one bred both hens and they all went DOWN Hill. They, in all these years, never go down hill. They either come up hill or across the hill . So I watched that Bigger Tom pound the first hen for 10 mins straight...now I know about calling and roosting and feed and travel(usually) but not breeding...That seemed like a real long time ...I wasn't sure I'd see her get back up from under him! Ya I had the watch on and timed it... the second hen was a couple of mins. After those hens looked to see what had been calling and then went straight to the new neighbors place and after strutting that ridge for another several mins those boys followed. Last Gobbles had them again down in his pines headed across to our place. So hear is my problem...I went to check that path and blind...saw where he bred the hens right in front of the opening...and checked for the roost trees...10-15 yrds from the blind. This no way, in a full moon, has me getting even close to it without being seen. The property there is so narrow I can't even get to the edge of the property line to cut them off from leaving ,with out being seen and definitely heard. Then the fact the deer are all feeding in there every morning. Well potty break and whine session over head across the street for a bit.

raw fries are 1/8 " sliced rounds of potato fried until Brown and tender, I just added the leeks half way through for extra flavor instead of onions. Google them there is a lot.

I got a new watering tub...
growalot replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Ya that goes a long with dementia..... -
Construction means demo and sometimes I get treats...huge industrial fan for roof mounting...they have domes that cover the motor /electrical parts..I now have a 1 1/2 foot deep by a bit over 3ft diameter weather proof watering tub...paint it camo and I'm set to fill it. Just in time for the new plot areas...but I may put it out near the CBB...the streams on our place open up father 150 yrds down the hill from it and the next nearest pond is 300 yards up the hill on the hunting lease Need to take the koi pond one out of commission for repairs..well it is over 15yrs old...I can find a use for anything...

Not specifically ,though right now I have a small turnip plot that the critters are loving...It is the late over seeding of turnips I did last fall they grew this spring and are surprisingly tasty, Yes I have actually picked the the tiny leafs and eaten them. but they go to seed very fast. That said they do say that with some of the newer varieties of swede and kale the sweetness in the foliage is there from the onset of growth and not only after a frost...If your deer have become accustom to these plants in the past...they may work in the spring. If they do not they will go to seed and you will have a natural fall seeding and also bugging for your birds. If you have concerns about them hitting it, plant with buckwheat...Plant the buckwheat first then over seed the brassica...The buck wheat will bring the deer in to feed and they will test out the brassica...one way or another...your feeding them. both are short season crops and will also help with weed control if you plan on a fall winter plot.

That's great Eddie, now I hope they don't stick around all summer. Yep we would all love seeing the pics, but remember, bachelor groups disperse in the fall and head out to the doe... So I hope you see a whole lot of doe this summer, with a couple of "resident buck"

Ny...to some extent I can see where people have a problem with it..To be honest I have an underlying issue..though I'm happy the kids get the chance. Perhaps not for so many years, get a harvest then go regular season. That's just my OP. Now to why some may have an issue, it is difficult to understand the extent of how bad some areas have it with illegal hunters, unless you live in such an area. It's not the thought of kid's getting an early trophy ,even one a person's been eyeing all season. It's the knowing some dirt bag without a kid in tow is free shooting it, because they know gun fire in the youth season doesn't get a second thought. I know they can and do engage in this anytime of year, hey no one is target practicing near dark on a Sunday nor at predawn a day or two before the opener.. There is no stopping it,just like all those shots we all talk about up to an hour before / after the opening of each gun season day. No they all aren't yote hunting It's irritating to some, that youth seasons by design makes it easier for these types. Just some things to consider before condemning a person for their voicing their thoughts. Though the OP seemed to have an issue with parents and grand parents,,,disregarding the fact many kids have neither to take them out thus the mentor opportunity these hunts provide, which is great.
