LOL You actually haven't heard me speak /read of raccoons in the past...You are talking down to the wrong person concerning raccoons and their dangers...I have had two rabies scares concerning them and have killed raccoons actually attacking me , with the help of my dogs. Two that climbed into a brush blind with me as I turkey hunted one dark spring morning...I have no love for them what so ever...but as I said, I interpret the laws differently. So unless actually confronted, will not trap nor shoot them out of season. Food plots are not agricultural as far as being an economical necessity. When we plant as hobbyists /hunters we shouldn't expect to be able to take the animals we are drawing in out of season because they are a nuisance eating WHAT WE PLANTED TO DRAW THEM IN...lol.... Try getting a deer nuisance permit for the deer eating your food plot and see what the DEC would think of that. I could call Avon and send this post to them and see what they think...but we both know if they said your interpretation is playing loose and fast with that rule ...it wouldn't change your conduct. So why bother... rhetorical question. -

Goosifer I have a few pics on here of trail plots tucked in heavy brush with small plots at the end of each trail , the neighbor just mows hers and that is where all the deer were this year...they bed in the thick golden rod that's scattered with pines and some trees. Deer feed on the clovers as they walk the trails in and out of cover Crossing trails and crossing mowed trails scent checking..Clover grows without planting here ...mow and it grows...they also opened up all the wild apple saplings and have great apples now....It's a tad cold but I'll try to take some pics of there place from my stand to give you and idea...I have a stand on the line to beat the west/north winds across my place...only problem is I cant use it much...There deer ALWAYS wind me on their place..lol It's also only really good for rifle through my woods to an opening on one of my plots...Great stand to sit in and read a book on a summers day though...very pretty As far as water goes if a dug hole will hold water(clay) yes...I have watering tubs at all plots...I pick up old bath tubs and use them I use animal watering tanks...and even plastic pond liners...Now you may think..Eeeww thats junk in the woods...well you can't notice them done right...buried, left on top of ground camo painted and surrounded with ,just enough brush...the deer like standing water......tubs on blocks allow for easy clean outs..also left up on blocks buried...I raise hundreds of much needed frogs every year in one buried tub.. yes you can control mosquito larva safely...either with solar fountains or small amount of dunk...Rains easily replenish the water...clean 2x's a year... my frog tub cleans it's self, so I do it in spring before the egg laying to remove leaf debris and any frogs that tried wintering in the tub instead of under it....usually 1-3 -

You and I read and interpret things differently...Where you see unlicensed home owners can destroy raccoons damaging property... I read that in combination with: I then go on to read: -
Nearly all I do is duel purpose...I'm planting grapes along a single wire system over the property line fence as well ...I have a juicer...and we love grapes...I only plant winter hardy varieties for the hill and they do well. . In the woods I'm working right now, I'm planning on putting in some more Aronia bushes They hold their berries late and make a good filler for grape and choke cherry juices...deer and turkey seem to like them as well and will produce in semi shaded areas...Planted in groups I can use them instead of the grey dog wood for them to bed in and around...Deer here love tucking themselves into the dogwood brush I maintain...I have a couple of more short platforms for popup blinds to build this winter so will be looking to plant attractants around those as well that will camo the tower and grow in limited light. I may use fir trees on one...easy to trim to height and firs handle wet and lower light...these I can dig locally on friends...balsam ,also easy to protect around the tower legs with fencing .. I'm going to take up a bit of fence line with concolor this spring...tired of spending $50 a pop for a Christmas tree...they will be spaced for good growth and will block views in time and block winds until I start harvesting......25 should do well I've gotten a bit tired of planting corn. will just need to spray them ...but fence should help on the one side...Our son worked on a Christmas tree farm as a trimmer 3 yrs while in high school...his trimming will be payment on his trees

First CONGRATS..Now you sound lucky to have a good drainage ,tile?system in as well?. SOIL TEST first on list. Then ask your self if it's the root system from coattails/ marsh grass holding you up while mowing. Will it be too thick for a frost seeding to take?. I'd avoid a plow ,but attempt a discing...several passes will probably be needed...here is what I've gotten to grow..spotty corn, and it tends to be short there, hog radish and turnips do pretty well..I'm talk standing water in fall and spring. No working it until June. The cow peas and winter peas did well...This year I am putting in a blend of clovers..pumpkins did great as well as melons and winter squash...I over seeded with turnips...It got so wet I couldn't walk on it....but the deer didn't seem to mind..in fact today most new tracks are in there..digging turnips.....4wheel is a must. Google: What food plot plants grow in muck soils Best clovers for wet soils What ag. Crops handle standing water

All my catalogs are in so plans have begun. What and where to plant and for best purpose. Rivers tower blind is a good example...just on the edge of the lane way plot in a brush pile fence line. Now this kin has anal pas through openings and the tower opening. It also has shooting lanes on the backside, not lane way,to catch hestitant and bedding deer. I am cutting back the trees here to get more Sun to the lane way, mature red oaks and opening ground to Sun..also to block my ladder climb and attract wild life. I'm wiring the tower legs and planting grapes I can put in 4 wire system this will block my climb until I am well above deer line of sight. And deer do enjoy grapes as well as Turkey.

Holy cow ...at least we had a railing and some space between us and the train,,,but that trestle shook our teeth loose and that train took forever! to get past us...needless to say we then high tailed it to the other side and hid in the brush and trees down the bank because a call had gone into the park police and I think the sheriffs as well... It took us some time to get back to where we could get out. As I recall 5 of us were up there. ... later our "class" use to hang in the park and have parties all of the time our junior/ senior year. No one ever bothered us as long as we didn't get too rowdy...but we usually had the pavilion to our selves back then. There and a camp ground up in Ossion...A bunch us us Would go camping for a week end in tents..Our parents would trust we'd stay out of trouble.... for the most part we did and we were all just friends so that was never anyone's concern, besides they figured having younger siblings with us would keep us good..instant lie detectors...lol

Started the big project yesterday...

Well they start out little in my head!...hahahaha -
OMG the things we did as kids...I wonder often how I'm still around to remember it all...They were building the expressway right behind our house...but the incline to the bridge they were to build was up the street... We would haul our bikes up to the top of the dirt the earth movers packed down that week(they were working a double shift during the week). We're talking 2 stories high...get a running start and ride our bikes of the edge...Honestly I do not know how one of us didn't kill our selves or break anything...Oh man we made a heck of a mess out of the side, until the police were asked to patrol often during the weekends...Walking are bikes to the top of Ossion hill and riding back down trying not to use our breaks ....diving off the cliffs into the Canaseraga creek in Poags hole. Climbing down wolf creek to the bottom of Letchworth or being on that train trestle when a train actually drove by...OK that was unexpected and I think we all needed a pants change that day. My poor kids payed for my wild days ...where parents shoved you out the door and only expected to see you back for dinner and then bed time When we grew up...I was like a chicken hawk over me kids...lol

How to tell a friend he isn't doing it right.
growalot replied to chas0218's topic in Deer Processing
Perhaps the shooting anything is a reaction to those guys that are "brutal" to him. His way of saying I won't be intimidated on my own land. If it were me .....I'd have booted them down the drive and been done with it... Some people tend to cut off their nose to spite their face... As far as butchering...invite him.over for a beer and to keep you company while you cut up.one of your own before having dinner with him.... -

I understand that...we are now looking at a used "new" phone replacement seeing we are still paying for the plan...and last night the food processor died...Now I have to admit...it was his Moms ,That I bought her 30 years ago... motor was still great but the plastic bowl and cutting blade housing finally gave way. The Gator need s a new belt for something...100 dollars for a belt! that with us installing... We are just getting nitpicked with accumulating extra cash flow seepage. I'm just thankful the draw the kids had on us is well over....Little blessings.... -

How to tell a friend he isn't doing it right.
growalot replied to chas0218's topic in Deer Processing
I never mention ethics, not once. Elmo didnt say meaning ful honest feedback. He said : not a friend if you can't criticise and make fun of them. World of difference in those two statements...Elmo not trying to throw you under the bus here, just correcting his statement. So to that, my opinion stands more to it than it seems and what he is saying maybe a reaction to this criticism. My personal view..A true friend doesn't need to assume their friends need assistance and have to be told how to do things "better"...A true friend lives by example and allows their friend to take from said examples as he sees them. Personally perhaps if Chas invited him to his house for a beer while butchering..Then if his friend has questions about what he sees he can ask if he wants. I Can imagine being ribbed and What was that...They are BRUTAL to him about what he shoots...Gosh Golly Gee whiz! Why would anyone ever think he'd become defensive about most stuff hunting related after reading this.
