  1. There is a site Talkhunting.com... It is one with hunters from all over the country but, mainly in the south...personally I'd start going to these and state sites to find out what the locals are saying about outfitters in their area...If you have a particular state with particular regulations you are looking for It maybe your best time spent...most hunters from the south I have talked to over the years have been great guys. They also have a real thing about youth getting involved.
  2. I should have referenced that...Wht. tail and smaller...Do places like Rochester,Buffalo and Syracuse get world class outfitters showing up? I personally find those shows a bit boring...just me...Been to a few just not my thing
  3. Aren't you brave...it's a crap storm here...high winds, 20 degrees, blowing snow...The plow and salt truck just made a run on the hill...I don't even want to walk to the mail box!....Great pics....
  4. I would think....and that's just my way of thinking...A really good, reputable outfitter, wouldn't have a need to use up their time and cash going to outdoor expos...They would have their place(s) filled with word of mouth and return customers.
  5. Anytime I say I used my rewards you can count on the store being Gander Mnt....Many may not like that store but I have gotten some great stuff from them... Then again The reason I hate shopping is I am a crazed researcher...I take an item and google it and the reviews and prices over many sites. I also take reviews with a # of salt because many are incentive based reviews now...Nice you gave a great review for a reduced or free product and hope to be chosen for more. Also half the reviews out there are for a totally different product...some are easy to catch ,others not. thus the: a while for me is a few years....
  6. Same here 2 1/2 ...but I think that top buck just may have a bit more going on in the future... his neck chest looked a bit bigger and deeper to me even though now his rack is smaller. His tarsal stain seemed a bit more pronounced and longer. though that could be just angle and light, Also could be his buddy went though a rougher rut...
  7. That rack doesn't even look real to me... at only 3 1/2 It's almost too bad he took him out of the gene pool. Not that any other deer he sired would turn out like that ,but the genetics for some interesting racks would be more widely dispersed. Though, doe have a lot to do with it as well. I wonder what minerals that he and the neighbors were putting out... Holy Moly now that little secret probably could put some cash in his pocket
  8. Love maple syrup...Mr B has a guy that he gets a gallon from every year..not sure if it's a gift or he buys it...he also has a guy that he gets a gallon of honey from. Same thing not sure if it's a gift or he buys it... That keeps us all year...I do not use much as far as sweeteners ...5# of sugar lasts me 2 yrs... I give you guys tons of credit...it's a whole lot of work for a relative small, but Delicious reward....
  9. I really hate to shop but there are times I never shop... The first pre-holiday sales and the first after holiday sales...Now a few weeks after Christmas the extra % off clearances have begun with extra mark downs before all that... I just picked up a pair of water proof insulated hunting pants. Marked down from 129.97 to 69.00 with 20% off that and my rewards of 50.00 and free shipping...my cost including tax 8.21... I have been looking for a new pair a while now...I'm trying not to wear out my favorite pair between turkey bow through gun they get worn daily for months. Mr B. liked a couple of his X-mas gifts so well he just called and asked me to order 2 more for his office...both went down a buck in price each...I'll take a couple of extra dollars on what was a good deal to start with any day. So Depending on how the spending climate has been ...there should be some really good sales gearing up on certain things right now...
  10. When guys says small food plot ,I wonder what they think small is. All my plots are small. I still work a few with a tiller and harrow drag. BTW a harrow drag with a couple of fresh logs wired to it ,can be worth it's weight in gold.
  11. Stuffed cabbage and it's great..though I do mine as a layered casserole. We had baked cod, sweet n sour cabbage, mashed potatoes and home made blue berry cheese cake.
  12. Have you thought about taking a look at Raintree Nursery..I know they are out of Oregon but have at least in the past great stock ,customer service and so many root stocks to choose from They also sell root stock for grafting and budding....
  13. So most guys have one of these http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200511664_200511664 then you can buy these and be able to actually move the stand around the tree for best position and level it http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/ameristep-ladder-tree-stand-leveler-kit?a=210571 These for a whole lot less money I would think
  14. I do mine solo all the time...I bring extra straps with me and a length of heavier wire ( long straps)...this is so i can attach one strap to wire before climbing and take it around the back side of tree... climb half way up and pull the strap to me with the wire and get it hooked...Wire verses just the strap because it helps avoiding snagging on the way up. I then attach another below the foot platform...This you should be able to swing around back side and catch on the wire you still have from last strap. finish climb un-ratchet the stand and carefully descend the ladder distributing your weight evenly on the rungs and holding on to one of the straps you unhooked all the way down(wrapped around trunk) unhooking straps as you go...then release stabilizer bar and untie criss cross straps... biggest concern is kick up from the bottom both raising and lowering...I use two pieces or rebar...I hammer them in the ground along side of each leg...I then tie them to the legs not too tight you need room for the legs to have some movement with out kicking up. Tie the ( I use bailing twine) to the rebar very tightly first.then wrap around leg... lower with cris cross straps...to raise I do the leg tie off and then walk the ladder up to the tree. Now that sections are pinned a lot less dangerous...nothing like being half way up and a section slips out To secure the stand I do everything I did to lower, except I attach stabilizer and criss cross straps first. I always keep a strap and chain around the seat and then another at the foot platform...while in use.
  15. I didn't see the house on hill post before I typed......As some have said a God Send in emergencies. IE...Someone (me) missed a nail in their clothes, said nail comes out into the washer tub and fits perfectly through one of the holes in the bottom of the tub. Wash cycle goes into a spin mode and that sturdy little nail scores a line right around the bottom of the outer plastic tub. Can you guess what happened next? While I was out of the house? Yeppers..... the tub fills up for a rinse cycle and the bottom falls out... We now have a washer that is completely stainless steel ,both tubs and with smaller holes...I'm much more careful checking pockets.....floor drainage a beautiful thing
  16. We had two drains in are Avon home...neither connect to any mains... They ran out side and drains away from the house... Now the basement was dry but in severe weather the entire area would flood...we were one of the few that never had to have the fire dept pump us out for we had sump pumps in ours and a generator back up....I would look for water lines around the basement walls and please check with the fire dept if in town or knock on a neighbors door a few houses down...Tell tell them your thinking of moving to the area... are there any water concerns...check and see if it's a flood plain..I believe legally you have to be told...some home owners will gouge you severely if it is or could be re zoned.. a flood zone... Happened to our daughters friend and they ended up loosing the house. I assume you'd be hiring a home inspector and having the contract contingent on a clean inspection or any repairs needed being done within a certain amount of time at their cost.
  17. Let me amend the above statement. Successfully sued. We all know law suits can and are filed that are frivolous. These done with the hopes of a good insurance settlement and nothing more. That said Even insurance companies are now looking for a convictions of some sort before considering any such law suits as ones they'd attempt to " settle"
  18. Both cases are a wild animal running from a perceived danger...a death run is what we people call.it...Deer have no concept their running is due to being shot or spooked. All they know is the instinct to run from danger,it could have been a falling limb for all they know. Both cases a human caused the run because of their activity...Both activities being allowed by the state . Now if you were to say a hiker can be successfully sued, I'd agree a hunter could be as well.....Let's say highly doubtful.
  19. Belo muck land is land in flood plains that have had one type of drainage system installed or another to allow farming ...the soils are usually nutrient rich black soil. My Grandparents lived in Groveland station in the Genessee valley...The Groveland flats would flood yearly. As I grew bigger farmers like Kennedy farms brought in huge excavators and began digging drainage ditches bordereing and crossing through the flats...making those lands great farm lands...Hornell had an area as well with muck ,rich blk soils...That became great farm lands....Though the conversion wiped out the best migratory Bird hunting...the sky's were blk with water fowl...but also the absolute worst mosquitos when I was a kid.
  20. It is completely out of the hunters control where a deer runs after a hit...just as it is if a hiker were to spook a deer on a trail walk and it goes to run over, trampling a hunter, biker,or someone's kid....No liability
  21. LAWD...hope he and all of you settle well into this new situation...I love a good meat loaf!
  22. Are you ready?: Southwestern chicken soup, cubed BSC breast sauteed in seasoned EVO with 4 cloves of garlic and chunk onion. 1 quart HC tomatoes, 4 cups of chicken broth a sprinkling of Rendezvous seasoning and cumin. Then to this I added...chopped turnip greens, carrots, corn, yellow and green summer squash, green beans lentils, black beans, great northern beans, chopped jalapeno pepper, blk pepper, roasted and fresh red pepper, mushrooms and a cup of dry white wine. It is simmering on low and awaiting fresh buttered french bread.
  23. I have a tiny area towards the front near my wooden tower blind that I cleared out a bit...The oaks produced like mad and I now have around 13 Norway spruce saplings from the neighbors plantation growing ...Free trees..I can transplant anywhere I wish or keep trimmed low enough to use as future Christmas trees and cover near the blind I can shoot over and around... This will have the buck coming back in...they can get their racks through it far better and I'm hoping the doe will lead them here as a staging area...between the oaks and mature cherries, and hopefully grasses that will grow I'll be in good shape again...50 years ago this was a bean field the farmer we bought from planted yearly. Yes in 8N where deer eat every tree sapling around and are the cause of no under story...yes I am sarcastic over that particular subject...BTW the field pics I showed from my neighbors sanctuary...was an open field 15 years ago and she had sheep pastured in it. Before that rented out as a hay field.
  24. Here are yesterdays pics...There is a bunch of stuff under the snow and some I have cleared out ...lots and lots of standing dead in there. Start small and work up...lots for the brush pile fencing and a few piles here and there for the rabbits and other critters. Then there will be hinging in there as well.
  25. Here they are, Now this is part of 100 acres..the other 50 that holds the deer as well. Starts on a deep slope that this field drops down to facing east...this is facing west/north. then goes into a mature mixed forest and a scrub field they also mow paths through. The bottom is wet not swamp and is the perfect weather break from near all winds the back side of that 50 backs up to a neighbors red pine plantation and is heavily hunted on all sides by the surrounding neighbors and camps...That is why they hang in this 50 acre area. So there a little back ground...The Golden rod reaches well over 5ft in some areas during the summer. They have no food plots but do have horse pasture on the East facing slope, the goes the whole length of property...you can just see the top of it in the first picture.
