  1. I don't know your soils, but here we have a real moss problem...I'm talking years of Dominicans still moss will over take a plot fast.I've used moss killer and soil amendments but a plot lasts just 3 years max. We have cold wet soils.
  2. I have a 6 ft disc and it works great. I do woodland trail plots. Tractor width trails planted that end in small plots.I started mine in buckwheat, winter grains the first year. I Then went with a mix of clovers,Trifiol ,small Burnett, and chicory. The planted trails are lined with bramble ,wild Apple's and dog wood brush...
  3. So you know I talk to people..I'm in getting blood work done and chat up this young kid...of course I get around to hunting. His family hunts ...he has his tags but doesn't,you can guess where they go. Anyways he mentions his grandmother." She's a bit of a whinner. don't bother her during hunting season" . A family members car broke and asked her to take her somewhere...he says she starts whinning..."It's the last day of deer season and you want me to miss it!" I just laughed, my family knows just leave me alone I'm hunting!...I told him to give her a break, for at our age we realize it very well could be our last day to hunt. So this got me to thinking...I have really run into a lot of woman hunters this past year...and ladies my age and older,as well as young girls...You guys in these gun/bow clubs should look into this and have a banquet celebrating woman hunters...Good PR,and perhaps more members to recruits something to get more woman to take their course ,for real,. Set up mentoring, private lands to first timers....just a thought..we don't bite...Well unless you screw with our hunting time
  4. You just can't fix stupid...he regretted his chicken dinner...I'd bet that man is full of regret 7 days a week..dumb jazz.
  5. The fact you beat pygmy too the draw on that astounds me. Now I loaded the above line with enough for you to make a couple of new replies....lol
  6. It's the deep snows in areas of the state that get the adult deer...coyotes can maintain a top snow crust run where deer can't and tire easily. I see a significant increase in coyote tracks here when the snows get belly or more deep. The thing is unless there is aerial work being done, you won't find too many out in the woods in snows that deep. So who knows what killed that carcass found in the first thaw or spring...
  7. As I said more than once..I really don't care...I do know what has happened here...Right now having areas where nearly every single gun hunter is also a bow hunter isn't common...but it is what it is, and I'm seeing what I'm seeing...Listening to what locals are saying and seeing. When I have the farmers commenting on it, the delivery people mentioning it, and everyone saying they are seeing a distinct change in deer habits to the point a few have mentioned evolution and genetic. Now I don't think that, but it shows the depth of concerns over what they are seeing in deer movement. You saw movement in day time the last two weeks and first of gun...consider what will happen when they have Oct1 through gun of increased movement. I know what will happen. I am seeing it, I have mentioned it..in fact I started mentioning a a few years ago with pics of doe walking around looking up into trees. A few years ago when I started saying doe are harder to kill than buck. When talking of the deer bedding next to the kennel....out in the garden I have to walk past...spooking them along the side of the road walking down hill...walking past them with in feet to have them then jump and run. Watching them literally crawling through heavy rose brush when there is easy open walking. Bedding under stands and under blinds..That's not patterning ME...that is a change in behavior...I have 40(with the one delivered today) stands and 13 ground blinds...I switch up every day I hunt. I enjoy hunting with the cross bow...took my little buck with it...May not have missed the only shot I had on a doe had I had the faster crossbow...So I have no problems here. I will at camp...The poaching will be bad there...The deer movements will change...but That's for the guys to worry about. Also like it or not the guys you heard shooting before and after hours..ones nearly everyone here got ticked off about, well they will be joining the bow guys that do the same...but with better equipment for it and for an extended time period. That is the nature of humans, given that inch, they will inevitably yank it for more.
  8. made it...and Angel made it to the cam be for me...This will be a favorite one...
  9. Would you like to show me any where, in what I wrote that I said a "stampede of evil gun hunters " Never mind,. I understand you just wanted people to think I said that. Of course no one would ever think that guys are holding off buying a crossbow until full inclusion, well that thought would be... ridiculous. I also said give it time.... Though a guy from Ohio pointed out lower hunter satisfaction since inclusion....someone else mentioned Ohio forums a buzz with the same concerns...talk of their woods being "crowded" ....Which is another humorous thing to me ,seeing how holding Ohio and other states as a "look what they have" compared to pitiful old NY. Yes ''forest through the trees" and "always greener on the other side"...We all shall see..
  10. No the main point was the more bodies you put out there with any weapon the more nocturnal the deer will get and the faster...so poaching with any type of weapon ...in the end..... it will not make a tinkers dang worth of difference...The guys wanting a better ,earlier chance at a buck will be just as frustrated as they were in gun season...just earlier.. That is what I find so funny about these pages and pages of debate, finger pointing and name calling ect....hunters really think deer are just going say hay that's OK........ crowd on in on us as we are headed into full survival mode. With feeding and breeding before winter hits. We'll just go about our normal routines... That they will........ because they actually know how to feed at night and by golly I believe they haven't a problem breeding then either...So yes first few years probably not that big an issue...but wait...and then even those testosterone driven youngster will get the memo and sooner than ever before.... Like I said....makes no difference to me...it's here already...but there are going to be some unhappy guys going WTH! Where are all the deer these bow hunters have been seeing for years....Go back home and look behind the bushes next to your garage.....
  11. Get one of these...I'm taking mine out with the 243 to re sight and then do a bit of calling out back... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vusklq44gY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdS01RP8h38
  12. Get one of these...I'm going out this weekend to sight in the 243 using my new one and to get use to it. Then will try a bit of calling out back. That's where they wake me up at night all summer long...non stop howling and yipping....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vusklq44gY
  13. Well that will happen in all seasons no matter the weapon ...just look at those rapid fire ML'ers...but no worries...With the deer hanging out 10-3am...not flagging alerts and as I have been gathering by many hunters in recent days...laying flat and allowing hunters to walk by hanging out in road ditches, very close to camps, barns, houses and as near to where the people hunting them are staying as possible. Which makes sense to me... deer reasoning, why not let them walk past you ,not really looking there, to hunt you in the woods while you relaxing the tall grass or land dip near where they are coming from. Oh that's right...hunters are still assuming deer are dumb ...all these added moving bodies will make even the dusk/ dawn debate mute...
  14. Make sure you have a few heavy towels and a blanket to dry and wrap her in on the way home. Also warm not cold water to drink. http://www.petmd.com/dog/emergency/common-emergencies/e_dg_hypothermia?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=+hypothermia in +dog&utm_content=Hypothermia>Modified Broad&utm_campaign=PetMD_US_Search>Non-Brand_Emergencies-Dog&utm_brand=&extcid=497919972 http://www.pethealthnetwork.com/dog-health/dog-diseases-conditions-a-z/hypothermia-and-your-pet
  15. Don't laugh FSW...I'll never forget walking out of my woods in the dark with a full moon because I had a nice buck and a couple of doe feeding on elder brush around and under my stand at least 40 mins past the sun dropping behind the hill top....Hit the corn of the lease woods and what is now the corn field and hear the distinct twang of a string release and thwack(compound)...when I stood back up..because as pointless as it was, instinct made me drop...I look up and there up in a ladder stand silhouetted against a rising bright full moon is the A hole that shot..I got to the house and called ...told them he was still out there with a flash light looking for the deer. They arrived 1 1/2 hours later...needless to say he was long gone. Again not the point of that original post...I believe I mentioned the point a few times in that post.
  16. Stubby ,you actually need to turn down the speed on your brain and actually read what I said: First...NOT ONCE Did I use the term POACHING. Do I really need to go back through the years and pull up the threads of shooting before and after sunrise. If this would improve your comprehension of what I was referring to I am glad to do so. Though I believe most reading that understood. Now It is obviously done during gun season, we all have done EXTENSIVE reading about it this year alone...but lets get real here.It is much easier to get away with those shots with archery equipment. Then add a light gathering scope on a cross bow and ...well you should be able to decipher the rest.. How many of those taking that type of shot in gun would ever hesitate taking the same shot with a crossbow in hand...rhetorical question there. Now for all of the above...not even the point of the original post you referenced.
  17. I would think that puts a point on at least one long running HNY thread...
  18. Still at it huh... I use to care...now I do not because with nearly every gun hunter here being a bow hunter the die has already been cast and I am already seeing the results. That said, for those of you who aren't in this situation and are all gung ho for the entire archery season to be open to crossbows......Well mark these words on 12-30-16....in no more than 3 years after inclusion...you will be wishing they hadn't done it. Oh there will still be deer, there's no doubt and guys will still be shooting big deer and doe....but I can guarantee and not being a person that bets on anything but a sure thing, more will be in illegal hours than legal. Which happens now anyways, but will increase and push those movement times back even further. Unless you are hunting hundreds of privately owned lands and control all pressure put on those deer. The average hunter will be wandering around wondering where all the deer went and blaming the DEC. This I will find funny, not only did they cut their deer sighting over all bow and gun for themselves, They cut out one more group to blame.... for now they are the bow hunters...The whole thing makes me smile in wonderment. Never seeing the forest through the trees....
  19. Herb infused olive oil and bread....tossed salad...pasta(kindle won't allow me input type). I boiled in tomatoe juice and fresh herbs, tossed with diced tomatoes sauteed portabella, fresh herbs roasted red pepper, grated Italian cheeses and herbed olive oil. Dessert was dark chocolate brownies and vanilla ice cream
  20. I almost missed this! Happy Birthday May your day be great and the up coming year FANTASTIC lol.... same day as Mr. B...
  21. So I only have a minute, Mr.B. turns 59 today, so I have a feast to make. He wouldn't let me take him out to dinner... But while out and about doing errands and blood work, I ran into neighbors daughter. Well her friend, who was with her had been allowed to hunt and got one of the big 8pts in gun...I'll have to check cam pics, I believe I have him..9 in. brows and a heavy 18'' spread on the rack. The only one taken there but they spotted the big double drop tine...before bow season and they were hunting him hard...No ones seen him since my sighting in bow season...He showed me 2 absolute monsters gotten by friends...one 10-12...to be honest I was having a hard time processing the tine length to notice point #s..I said to him those G3's must be 16 inches ...he said 17 and change the shortest tine was 16 other than the brow guards...Poughs Hole, not sure Dansville ...the other was a massive 8pt out of Groveland. I now know of at least two monster taken in our town neither on the hill or the double drop yet ...I wish I had the cell phone..I would have had him send me the pics. So they told me straight up...the deer were not leaving the property much and all the buck stayed together really late...they told me exactly where they were crossing ...and that the guys behind them and Vermonters where hanging their lines BIG time...which is why she had a new non family member hunt..apparently the shoulder cut wasn't. She broke her arm at the should and has pins, screws and staples...ouch...country life's not easy...
  22. I use the back leg roasts...we have a big cast iron roll through cuber/jerky cutter. Though I've never tried the jerky cutting rollers ...I cut my jerky by hand...The guys will love this...I use the loins for jerky. Now that is if I have gotten a few bigger deer...this year just one loin went for jerky and one batch was made. Remember Mr B. is on a limited red meat diet...I don't need a ton of chops. I have always loved cubed steaks...They just taste different...This deer was so darn tender I had to be careful running the meat through...and OMG was it GOOD!...I cooked them rare and they had such great flavor...I can honestly say beef cubed steaks couldn't hold a candle to this...
