  9. Just came in....wind is a tad wild and right out of the was but it was nice and sunny....didn't see any thing...not even crows....hope to get out this after noon....wind is suppose to calm a bit
  10. Yes....and they will also utilize it differently...ie....clovers will get hit regularly....turnips and braccs...when first planted will either be ignored till late season or rarely used the first year...then hammered the following year after frost...I've had them in several years now(rotations)and this year they hit them some before the frost and have topped the greens after frost but are taking bites out of the bigger ones and leaving alot of smaller ones ...going for the corn and I planted oats a bit too early and they have eaten all seed heads and eating the red clovers underneath....I think they are leaving the turnips as a heavy snow food source...it's a learning curve for them....They have finally discovered the sorghum and are hitting those seed heads....We had a bear come through and flatten most of the corn and a lot of the sorghum....looks like a roller zig zagged though it....tons of big dried corn cobs laying out there
  11. Nice!...Congrats... I'm in this a.m. but will be out mid morning for another doe....sausage stuffer arrived yesterday....but the shoulder and elbow are on fire all night....raked a 1/2 mile worth of trails yesterday for stalking during gun and ironed clothes
  12. Well for one thing the dog is considered property and the guy was ...from what you said...on your property....so at the very least it should have been trespassing and destruction of private property so a fine and compensation...if you could put a true monetary value to him....Now that really doesn't help and I'm sorry it happened...Even if the dog had "treed" him ...if on private land.... he was just protecting your property My dogs are kenneled and housed the entire hunting season...just for this reason....and with the new lower bow set backs coming in and cross bows in gun ....I predict a increase in this.....no shots to ring out to alert ppl
  13. It's been a great season so far...but most seasons for me are great...except last season....and that was my fault
  14. Does anyone have a recipe for chipmunk stew? First, you are going to need about 10 or so fat chipmunks - best thing to do is capture the little buggers and fatten them up. This way you can make sure they are disease free. Also, you can monitor what they eat. Unless you don't care then, just go out and hunt down 10-15 chipmunks. If you use a shotgun, please make sure to remove all shot from the meat first. IF you use any of the three chipmunks, please make sure they are fresh kills - makes it easier to peel the fur off. Make sure you decapitate them right after and strip their fur off. Hold them upside down to make sure all the blood runs out. Save the fur - you can make a nice pair of gloves with them later. With a sharp knife, de-bone the little guys, but save the bones. Once you have your pile of bones, put them in a 2 qt pan and boil them. You will use this as your stock for your stew. Chop up meat into fine pieces or grind. • 2 lb. Chipmunk meat pieces • 1 small yellow onion, chopped • 1 small green pepper, chopped • 2 stalks of celery, chopped • 2 large carrots, chopped • 3 potatoes, large chunks • 1 can (14.5 oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained • 1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste • salt and pepper to taste Use your broth you made from the bones to boil the meat in a large sauce pot on low heat. Make sure you do this slowly, use a slow cooker to make the meat tender. Cook for about 3 hours on low heat. Then let it set for 30 minutes and skim off any fat. Add potatoes; cook until tender, bring up to a low boil on medium heat, stirring frequently. ADD all remaining ingredients; mix well. Bring to boil; cover. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. SPOON into soup bowls
  15. OMG...I feel like I'm at a camp fire.....with too many marshmallows with sticks up their middles.. subjects on this forum routinely become that one chicken in the coop that gets a cut....all the other chickens smell blood and peck it to death
  16. Geeeez... no sense of humor....I thought I'd get at least one of you...lol
  17. Yes an they developed a scanner...that when passed over the iris it reflect the image of person that shot it off the back of the eye.....
  18. Over the years I've said enough on this issue....JUST CARRY A SMALL GOOD CAMERA...if they wont give up the tag number...you at least have a photo...DEC refuse to do any thing...post enlarged photo and a reward...who doesn't have a color printer now days?
  19. The problem is as one said the posting of "I lost a deer." during bow season..I admit I did the same thing last year....but not just to release frustration and guilt but to mention Deer search....What it is... IMO.... that when bow hunters...and I will say all bow hunters loose a deer they KNOW they did...with the number of lost gun shot deer....there are a whole lot of deer lost and the shooter never knew...as Cynthia pointed out...never even try tracking in many cases...I think many have a mind set if it didn't go down ...it wasn't hit...and IMO I think some ppl look at gun shooting a deer as a "Oh well shit happens" and just go about more hunting....Bow hunters tend to take it a bit more personal... Just observations from conversations over many many years....I personally think everyone should have to bow hunt one year before getting a gun license...but that's me
  20. Actually Mr B. was so worried as he rushed down that hill to find me and then saw my condition...when I gasped that out ...his whole face changed and he stood over me laughing...I laugh now..but it took a few months before that happened
  21. That's it...AND THE BACK GROUND!!!...like not sky lining deer...either up hill nor down... We hunt in hill country when more than one hunter is on our property ...if your walking ...you better be blowing on a whistle...they use to do drives at camp ...before it got too thick...drivers had to use a whistle as they walked and we all wear blaze...actually helped them take deer...it's not a noise they were use to and they would stand and listen to try and identify...giving good shot ops.
