Kit one week later and 4 lbs heavier!
Uncle Nicky replied to First-light's topic in General Chit Chat
Nice. Good luck with her!! -
Savage Model 99, .358 Winchester caliber. I have see through mounts, so I can use the sights or the scope. I just treated myself to an AK (open sights) for Christmas, I plan to use it hog hunting when I head down to Georgia in March. A lot of the shots are at running hogs, at fairly close range. We will see how 7.62 works on a hog, I will be using 154 grain shells.

What kind of pup is she? -
Not thrilled with "goals", reminds me too much of the job where they are always talking about goals. Hunting for me these days is a hobby and an escape from work, I try to keep the competition out of it. But I do plan to do more shooting in between seasons, and I'm looking for more private land to hunt with my dog, trying to hunt public land in the fall is becoming your usual needle in a haystack, at least if you're looking for turkeys.

How many types of game animals have you hunted in your life
Uncle Nicky replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Whitetail deer Mule Deer Antelope Bison Caribou Moose Black Bear Squirrels Rabbits Pheasants 4 species of turkey so far Wild Hogs Axis Deer All kinds of ducks & geese Always wanted to kill a sika deer in Maryland, one of these days....I'm in the system to get an alligator tag in Georgia, should take another 2 or 3 tries. -
A few more pictures of Maizy Jane Bumpyhead, because I am so damn proud of her, and cannot help myself. Probably the best turkey dog in Pennsylvania, and one of the best in the country.

My second and third best girls.

Tonight's selection at Casa Uncle Nicky was moose steak, in mushroom sour-cream gravy (and caraway seeds). Served over rice, with garlic broccoli. I broke out a bottle of my favorite private reserve ginger beer. Life is good.

Can dogs withstand this cold weather ?
Uncle Nicky replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Depends on the breed and how they are used to living. I know the club I was in in Virginia had deer dogs (beagles and foxhound mixes). They stayed outside all year long, but they would put straw in their boxes once it started getting real cold, and they survived. Unless the dog is a husky, I doubt they enjoy the cold like this much, but most will do OK. I'm pretty sure the insulated boxes stay around 45 degrees. -
Just got off the throne again. We have spent so much time together, I decided to name him, the downstairs toilet is now been christened "Chuck". Feeling like most of this is through me now, energy is coming back, Pepto is almost gone so if I can find a store open, some more Pepto or Imodium SHOULD do the trick. But the IV is a distant option, if I don;t feel better by tomorrow. Putting the last wild hog roast in the crockpot this morning, if I can keep that and mashed potatoes & kraut down, I think I have this thing licked.

Baker Mayfieid is 40 years younger than me, trying to make a name for himself, and trying for a Rose Bowl win. I just want to get through this and be back to work on Tuesday.

Have the flu I think. Turkey noodle soup, a ginger ale or two, and probably sleeping by 8. Whooppee!!

You can pick up a Moultrie feeder for about $100-200, pretty much set it and forget it. You can also build your own out of a PVC pipe very cheaply, gravity style, but just about any animal will start eating your feed.

Christmas Wrapping- The Waitresses Snoopy's Christmas-The Royal Guardsman Yes, I know, both gay as hell. But I like the idea of a depressing Christmas with a happy ending. WORST Christmas song is Christmas Time is Here from the Charlie Brown show they show each year. I now understand why so many people kill themselves at Christmas, that song could push one over the edge.

Thank you for the clarification Dinsdale. Africa IS a big place, and obviously the whole continent is not fenced in. What I meant to say was, "a good percentage of land open to hunting is under high fence".
-
I have never been to Africa, but my understanding is that a good percentage of the land is under high fence. We are not talking about a breeding pen that is 50 acres like we see commonly here on the East Coast, but thousands of acres. And animals do come and go pretty regularly, regardless of if there is a fence or not. I've hunted numerous times in Texas. Last trip I had shot my buck (low fence/free range), and the rancher asked if I would mind shooting a doe in the high fence area (4,500 acres-bigger than a lot of state forests). I had previously looked down my nose at high fence in the past, but this trip made me open my eyes some. The does and bucks I saw were every bit as spooky and wild as the deer in the low fence area. While I still don't ever plan on going on a "canned" hunt, I will say that high fence, if done correctly, is every bit as fair chase & challenging as low fence.

I still have a pair, bought back in the 80's. They were THE best hunting boots at the time, felt inserts kept your feet warm. I believe today's boots use better insulation, I can stay out a lot longer now than I did back when I wore the Sorels. For some strange reason, I can't bring myself to toss them out.

Old Grandad, 114 proof. I don't usually drink whiskey, but when I do, I don't fool around.

Owning your own land is not it's all it's cracked up to be. You'll have more fun in the long run getting on a lease or paying for a few guided hunts each year. Hunting is not a competition or a race to fill the freezer. Just enjoy your time in the woods. Hunt the mountains as hard as you can. Once you hit 50 or so, it will not look like much fun. Choose your hunting friends and outfitters wisely. But once you find someone dependable, do your best to hold onto them. Don't sweat it if your wife complains about how much time you spend hunting, your hunting dogs, or the mounts you hang up. She may not talk to you for a few days (WINNING!), but she's not leaving. And if she does leave, you're probably better off anyway. Nobody dies wishing they had spent more time at the office, but most of us will regret all the time we missed hunting or fishing because we were working.

Stay inside, light the fire, have a couple drinky-poos, and wait for a warmer day.

Part of all this I've gotten spoiled....killed axis deer in Texas, caribou & moose in Canada, a bison in Wyoming...whitetail is just OK. I know how to cook and cut meat, so I don't think that's any part of it. I could try hunting for horns, but honestly if I bring another mount into the house I will probably wind up in divorce court. These days I have as much fun trying to knock a squirrel out of tree as I do rolling a deer. A guy who likes to hunt and fish could have worse problems I suppose....

3 total for me, plus I took a deer a buddy shot (he is old and didn't want to pay to have it processed). I can still hunt in PA until the end of January, if I want to brave the elements. I'm almost curious to see what tag soup tastes like. I am liking the taste of venison less and less as time goes on. I have plenty of people I can donate some to if it comes to that, but I'm getting tired of all the work involved with butchering something that I don't especially care for on the dinner plate....
