Things are not that tough that I would eat a coyote, but probably would if I was starving.

If I was buying...Ruger Blackhawk, I had my eye on one for years, but never "pulled the trigger". L-O-L When my father passed away, I inherited a Virginia Dragoon .44 mag, it was brand new in the box, never fired, manufacture date stamped on the barrel is 4/16/1974, it has a 5 1/2" barrel. I've put a few hundred rounds through it so far. It kicks like a mule, I put checkered wood grips on it, and it handles a little better now (EXTREMELY hard to find grips for this particular gun). Not the most accurate pistol I have ever owned, but I am getting used to it, I can hit what I'm aiming at from 20 yards. I shoot .44 special rounds at the range, but have .44 mag hollow points for home defense & hog hunting. I am planning to bring it to Georgia with me next month on a hog hunt.

MOST high powered rifles, if you zero at 25 yards as a starting point, will be about an inch high at 50, and close to zero again at 100. This is acceptable for almost everyone who is deer hunting. Obviously, if you are shooting long range for groundhogs or heading out west for antelope or mulies and are expecting longer shots, you'd want to adjust. A .22 rimfire will be pretty close to zero at 25-75 yards, but drops dramatically after that. Slug guns drop a LOT more than a rifle bullet does. I zero in at 75 yards, anything closer or out to 100 will be in the kill zone My experience from hours on the range, anyway. Personally, I'd stay zeroed at 100, and if you do need to take a 200 yard shot, just aim EVER so slightly higher. 3 higher inches at 200 yards with an HP rifle is not going to look like very much of an adjustment if you are looking through a 9X scope, especially if you are looking to put one in the boiler room.

I won't go as far as saying I get freaked out when things don't go as planned, because sooner or later, it happens with all of us, but I agree. Exactly why I'm a huge proponent of using plenty of gun when ever you decide to shoot at something, and for archery only taking high sucess shots on dry days. But that's another thread for another day....carry on.

The official Superbowl 2018 thread
Uncle Nicky replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
I really wanted to be sour on football and the NFL with the players taking a knee and lack of response by most of the owners, but with all the excitement and hype going on in the area, I got sucked in. Great game, and glad to see the Eagles win the big one after a 58 year drought, their time was due. Last few minutes were a complete nail-biter, and I kept telling my wife to settle down until it said .00 on the clock, Brady and the Patriots have been known to pull games out of their *ss before. I'm about 20 miles from Philly, heard gunshots, fireworks, and people yelling until 1 AM, I'm sure it's a lot more intense downtown. Most of the fires you saw on TV and Youtube were trash fires and sawhorses, mild mayhem, all things considered. Eagle fans don't deserve the bad press they receive, they're not all that bad. Really. -
Yes, that is typical. And by May 1, they will be pretty much tight-lipped until next February.

You can kill 4 birds in Tennessee, 3 in Georgia, 3 in Virginia, 5 in Alabama, 3 in South Carolina, all less than a day's drive, and as many in NJ as you can get tags for. I'm thinking this post is mostly sarcasm, but it's no secret that numbers are down in PA & NY, as well as some other former hotspots (Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas). I'm still a little miffed that they cut back the NY limit on fall birds to 2 in some areas, the same year that I got a dog for fall hunting, but that horse has been beaten enough, and doubt that will change any time soon.

What's wrong with Nancy Pelosi
Uncle Nicky replied to Zag's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Politics as usual. A few years aqo a Repub yelled "You Lie" during an Obama speech. Now we have a Repub president and the liberals are salty. And yes, a lot of what Trump says makes good sense. He is crazy like a fox. -
Not big ticket per se, but it wound up costing a small fortune. About 10 years ago, I lost my keys while scouting at my camp in Allegany county. I had to pay for a tow, a bribe (tow truck driver wasn't supposed to go off road), a new electronic key for my truck, and a room in Hornell while I waited for the Dodge dealer to open and make me a new key. NEVER again, I ALWAYS leave my keys back at the truck now, and never locked inside. Last fall in Nebraska I set my dog's GPS collar and receiver on the back bumper of my truck. I drove to town to get gas, miraculously the receiver stayed on the bumper, but the collar was gone. The next day, when it was light, I tried backtracking, and about 2 miles from the ranch on the highway, the collar was laying in the road. It hadn't been run over that I could tell, and worked fine. I felt VERY lucky that day.

Tonight made Thai curry, with venison. Felt a little crazy, so I put it over noodles, rather than rice.

Semi-autos Throwing Brass
Uncle Nicky replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I thought so also. I highly doubt the club allows shooting a rifle like this in the first place. This was the first time I took the rifle out, it's an AK style rifle. I thought I had gotten to the range early enough to beat the crowds, but apparently not, it was the first warm Sunday in about a month. I wasn't trying to see how fast I could empty the clip, more interested in getting the sights zeroed in. I would have gladly switched seats so that I was furthest to the right, but I think he just wanted to complain. I'll bring a large piece of cardboard next time, maybe that will keep the shells from flying over to the shooter on the right. -
I didn't know that. I like him even less now.

Semi-autos Throwing Brass
Uncle Nicky replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I was on the other side of the fence Sunday morning. Took my new semi-auto rifle to the range, after a few shots the guy sitting to my right got a little mouthy, started complaining that my empties were flying his way. I calmly asked him what exactly did he think I could do about it, and he was welcome to move if it was a problem; I moved over once the seat on my left was open. He was shooting a .50 Barrett, first time I ever saw one up close, you could feel some sort of vaccum action every time he fired it off, very strange. -
whats your usual turkey decoy setup?
Uncle Nicky replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Turkey Hunting
I know lots of guys, old timers mostly, who look down on decoys, hunting out of a blind, fanning, you name it, they are still living in the days when birds gobbled all day long and came running to calls... Turkeys are strange creatures, they never seem to do the same thing twice. Sometimes decoys work, sometimes they shy away from them, you just never know. What I don't like about them is that they limit you, once you put them out you're pretty much stuck in the same spot for the next few hours, I don't really like dragging them around with me if I decide to pick up & try a new spot. I will add, if you really are serious about hunting with decoys, spend the extra $$ and buy good ones, they DO make a difference. -
Saw "The Commuter" this weekend with Mrs. Just like Clint Eastwood, Liam Neeson is getting to be too old to play a tough guy,

whats your usual turkey decoy setup?
Uncle Nicky replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Turkey Hunting
I don't use them if I am hunting in the woods. In an open field, what I have noticed is that a gobbler decoy with a real fan (along with hens) is fairly effective during the opening week, I think they are still scrapping some. Most times I will put out a few hens and a jake or gobbler decoy if I do put them out, I am finding as time goes on that more decoys the better, I guess a safety in numbers mindset on the turkeys' part? -
Quiche lost it's sissy appeal back in the 80's. Now I think the benchmark is wearing tight jeans, and wearing your hair in a bun.

Yes, but even the internet, Facebook, and video games get boring after a while. People need real life experiences, and there will always be a certain amount of folks who will want to get closer to the food chain. I'm thinking the biggest problem down the road won't be lack of interest, but severe gun restrictions if we allow the wrong politicians to get in control. I guess that alarms me more than anything else.

I don't think deer hunting is doomed. I am sure it will be different within the next 20 or 30 years, antlers and competition for prime spots will be the major drivers. We (being residents of fairly crowded states on the East Coast) see the changes in society and kids differently than those in less crowded parts of the country. There are still places in the US. where there really is very little for kids to do, beside hunt and fish, and those areas won't be changing much any time soon.

2 weeks in Texas. Axis deer, whitetail, hog hunting with dogs, and fall turkey with my dog. Maybe a deep-sea trip to the gulf while I am there. And a quail hunt or 2.

Waterproof box call, right now I have a couple MAD River Otter calls. Why? Because they work in any weather, sound realistic, and are quite simple to use. One sound is sounds a little deeper (jake), and the other side is higher pitched(hen). Number 2 would be a trumpet yelper, easy to use, works in any weather, and sound both unique and realistic.
