  1. Definetly go 50 cal. .45 is great for target or small game, but not what you want for deer. As previously mentioned, a lighter projectile means less kick....but they arent worth it if they dont shoot strait in your gun. Pellets or powder are strictly a personal thing. I buy powder for target use and for my first load. It is MUCH cheaper than pellets. I do use pellets in my speed loaders, as I tend to spill. 100 grains is plenty at typical NY ranges, and in my gun ( and from what I hear many others...) three pellets do not burn up completely. I find them on the ground smoldering. My opinion....The CVA wolf is (sorry guys) about the worse inline out there. My buddy bought one, because it was cheap. It may shoot and put a hole close to where it should go, but it feels like a toy and is very inexpensively built...like it is priced. Just remember even if you buy a stainless rifle, you MUST care for them like you would any other. Stainless does rust, and with most any of the blackpowder/substitutes, you dont want to leave them to clean later.
  2. 39 lbs you did real good. Actual edible meat from a typical white tail about 30-35% meat is alot more likely by far than 50%.. The bigger the deer the ratio stays the same unless you count the layered fat...which I certainly wont.
  3. Just a thought...not that its like you have an armory of 12 gauge though....I have alot of components ...ALOT for .308, and am between rifles loaded for it. I was able to find a new .308 that I want at a great price...match the rifle to the supply...I should pick it up saturday, and am starting the case prep for reloading today.
  4. I think probably any of your buddies would be delighted with them for a cold beer. Otherwise in my opinion...disregarding stupid corona virus shortage stuff, I would pay tops seven-eight bucks for the lot in not new ammo at a garage sale pricing.
  5. I shoot the exact same gun and load. Three pellets dont burn completely for me...I find them smoldering. First question... What is the avg. range you are shooting? In my woods it is almost unheard of to have a shot beyond 50 yards. I am sighted for fifty. Hundred yards is unheard of.
  6. The Banner is a very low end scope. Had them years ago and was recently given a newer one. Sorry to say but not good experiences with any of them. I wouldnt trust em on a .22. You do get what you pay for.I am sure you have had good experiences with your Leupolds...I certainly have. I have never had a problem with any one of five I have, and need a new scope for a soon to arrive rifle. It will be a Leupold. Even the VX 2s are fine.
  7. I have a hammer I fondly recall dad using, and how it was his grandpas....couldnt understand why it still hadnt learned to bang a nail strait. It depresses me to think no one else in the family would have any thoughts for it. I would love to set up a vintage tool box with all the generations old tools I have for someone else to appreciate, but I fear it would be a wasted effort.
  8. Ford Fiesta, Hyundai whatever, Chevy Nova, all my motorcycles....
  9. Sounds good. Looks like I will go ahead with my plan.
  10. Of course be sure not to wear ANY cotton whatsoever. Move slow going in. If I have to go any distance in, I carry my parka and leave my cowl /hat combo off, only putting them on when I arrive. Avoid caffeine...it is a vasoconstrictor and makes for cold hands/feet. I agree totally with those mentioning bibs....they cover the abdomin/kidney area, keeping alot of heat in and wind out. Other than totally avoiding cotton, I wear a total mismash of gear. Fleece henleys and pullover, fleece sweat pant over heavy weight poly long underwear, I have a pair of stretch wind proof fleece pants that I wear when the temps really drop, and if its in the low twenties or teens I stick hand warmers in my pockets, boots upper arms and chest pockets.
  11. Yo. I have yet to ever buy a firearm online...that is, purchase off Gunlist or another seller, and have delivered to a local gun dealer. I understand of course that you need the participating dealers FFL info, etc. Can anyone out there offer their experiences in doing this, good, bad or just the routine? I have a rifle impossible to find locally, but easily found on line at a very good price that I am planning on purchasing this way. Thanks for any input.
  12. LLewellin Setter. They are basically a field bred English Setter....in other words, kept to the original English lines for hunting, before the AKC got ahold of the breed for conformation. They run much smaller than the modern English Setters. Compact, fun, very smart, great family dogs, but need ALOT of running/exercise as hunting is all that is on thier mind 24-7. I dont think I would have another though. For them to be happy they need way too much exercise than I get offer.
  13. The zillions of Winchesters and Marlins up until the late eighties or nineties all were 1/2 cock only safeties. I never got the big deal...firearm basics. Keep pointed in a safe direction, keep the finger off the trigger. Both my 94s are so built and I have never had a concern.
  14. The intention is not to crush them, just seat firmly on top of them just like you would powder. Loads I have removed with pellets usually show some crunching though...but that could partially be from pushing them out.
  15. Thats how all Marlin levers came for many many years...only the past decade or so they had the crossbolt safety.
  16. Whoohoo! Have you settled on your outfitter? Remember most shooting for bears is close...25 to 50 yards...or closer. Bear woods be thick and close!
  17. I keep it simple...more just a reference to the location...The Border stand, food plot stand, back ridge, swamp stand, etc. Not much imagination. My buddy used to try to come up with symbolic names..."The Beach", Tombstone stand, etc. but I over rode him due to his infrequent use.
  18. I have a container of black powder from 1912, still shoots fine. A I have several canisters of 3031 from the seventies which have had no noticeable degrade...(at recommended loadings chronogragh). If kept away from heat and in a sealed container, modern powders are very stable.
  19. Northern tier finished last week end, so I am done. I would love another week or two, even if it was primitive arms, just to be out in the colder potentially snowy conditions.
  20. So are the robots reactions all programmed or handled remotely? I am guessing remotely, especially as the robot in the end chooses to "rescue" the robot mutt.
  21. None of my Leupolds, Redfields or Nikons have any sort of ring...all permanently closed/sealed.I have never seen any brand scope with a threaded objective...haviing also owned Weaver, Bushnell, Tasco, Simmons, Burris.... My concern would be for air/moisture getting into it. It will happen when you dont want it to. I would contact the mfg. in regards to that. Are you referring to a threaded ring on the inside of it? That would seat the objective lens.
  22. This is getting to be an older thread, but it looks to be a post 64 rifle (no full length extractor on the bolt that I can see). Still a fine rifle though. I have sold quite a few firearms through an auction house in Geneva Henneseys if i remember:). They advertise with pics, and you get what the market /demand is. I have overall done alright. Selling guns nowadays is not what it was twenty years ago. The auction house gets about 20 % commission on selling price, but that is still a far cry better than what you get selling to a gun shop/etc, and they handle all the paperwork.
  23. WTF? No way! Those critters get nasty very quickly!
  24. I love hunting the late season, but it wouldnt apply to where I am. What would be cool is if it applied to unused ML tags where I am
  25. I have never seen an objective bell/lens that wasnt fixed
