  1. Zag, don't I have to work lime into the soil?
  2. Well, I finally bought a used rotary cutter. My work has been cut out for me but it's getting there. Stripped and primed, let it dry for few days and then some paint. Then all is left is finding myself a nice 8n, disc single bottom plow. Hoping to be ready for the spring.
  3. I would say 125 is about right. Most of the time deer are believed or perceived to be a lot heavier than they actually are.
  4. Plus outfitter. What else better then putting in a plot during the off season.
  5. My property is only used as a thoroughfare. They strictly cross through. However, if they aren't crossing through I have absolutely nothing to draw them. My property is mostly white pine and Spruce trees. I do however have a good stand of mature Beech trees. Other than that nothing really, I've watched numerous doe eating the fallen leaves on the trees last year and this year. I even cut open the stomachs on every harvest my Brother and I get, all green grass or something of that nature. I don't know where they are eating unless they are picking from a small field or two. There are some mature farm fields but they are almost 2 or 3 miles away. I have to much traffic for them to be eating solely from that source.
  6. I don't, I'm just saying. Btw, I know 3 people who had deer/car collisions this year. With a police report they are entitled to the keep the deer if they wish. What I'm saying is if you really want you could get road kill.
  7. Gman I have no choice as that's as big as I can feasibly go right now. I will take a chance and see if it's produces.
  8. I read that on your post. That's great! Sounds like a great spot. Was an incredibly weird rut if you ask me. Weather was just too warm, I think deer were completely nocturnal.
  9. My friend has one, he saw 53 deer in 3 days two days ago. Crazy, I don't see 53 in 3 three years.
  10. Road kill, especially that of a deer. Rebar the kill to the ground so the yotes can't pull it away. Put a indicator on the deer so when it gets moved it triggers a doorbell in your house and BAM!!! I'm just saying...
  11. To go through with 1/2 acre food plot? I'm doing one this spring which will be my first. It will be a little over 1/2 acre. I usually hear people reaping the benefits but just talked to someone who said they didn't have good luck. I didn't get into with this person. I doubt they had soil tested, limed, fertilized and etc. Please let me know your positive and negatives. I'm trying to prepare myself as much as possible.
  12. Oh yes. Next year he'll be a beauty. I might shoot him this year. Hard to pass when you put in lots of time and only see spikes, 3's 4's and the occasion 6. I've passed bucks the last two years and I saw 1 eight point I was unable to draw on. Gets frustrating but have to keep at it.
  13. You are the second or third person to mention mixing with buckwheat. That's what I'm going to do. Hopefully I can put some equipment together for the spring. I'm determined and you know what they say, "don't underestimate manual labor", "where there's a WILL, there's a WAY!!!"
  14. Hmmm. Interesting. Go get him next time.
  15. I told my wife a few stories, she said "oh, too much detail".., How does a passionate hunter leave out this crucial detail? I can't. Well couple years ago I got a nice deer. I was back home showered, and headed to dinner at my parents. Group of 10 people said hey tell me the story of your harvest. As I'm about to, my wife interrupts and says, "I didn't know you got one, why wouldn't you tell me?" I quickly respond, you don't listen when I try, I give you too many details. She responded, "you're an a$$hole." Bottom line, I tell the stories to the people who get goosebumps. If you don't, well, that's your loss!
  16. Not to sound short, but if he's a good enough friends with you, don't let this ruin your friendship. If he's not, he shouldn't be sharing the same stand with you to begin with. But, you are not posting about your friendship anyway. You wanted to know about the sound the arrow made. Did you go back to look for the arrow?
  17. All great information. I'm thinking a blend of New Zealand brassicas, clover, wheat and grains. I had the soil test done. It says 2000lbs of lime/acre. So I definitely will be doing some hauling early spring. I don't have a plethora of equipment but am looking at two 8N's next week.
  18. Unfortunately, I'm going to say he hit him. Reason being: Aside from the sound, no blood or hair. WHERE IS THE ARROW? Retract his shot from stand and where deer was, if hit tree you'll find that arrow. Bottom-line you need to find the arrow, if you don't you have to assume its in him.
  19. I am at a complete loss for what to plant... There is just too much out there. Too many products and seed variations. The spot has already been cleared not prepped. It is about 60' x 500' in a rectangular shape. It literally gets 6-10 hours of sunlight in the summer. I love the idea of getting the plot ready in spring but not sure if this will also be conducive to bow season. I think most of you are leaning towards clover blends.
  20. I don't mind at all. Not a big fan of gun. I like everything about archery and not much about gun. I like gun for one reason, it's more days to be in the woods. But with this said, I also spend most of the time away from family during archery. I don't want to push it.
  21. I'm beginning to plan this right now so when spring is here I am ready. I'm not playing the procrastinating game this year. I definitely need something for all summer and fall... I hunt about 75 hours archery and 4 hours with the gun...
  22. Seed Blends? What do you guys recommend.? I was leaning towards Mossy Oak biologic. The seed blend I'm thinking about is "Full Draw". I would use this plot mainly for production during archery season. Tell me what plots work for you guys during archery. The only thing I question is this blend is meant to be planted only a month or so before the first frost. That would mean it would only be in the ground a month before Archery opener, OCT. 1st. My concern is that a month is too short before the season starts. I need the deer to get acclimated and familiar with the plot, so they understand there will be an acre plot there for the fall time. Let me know your guys thoughts.
  23. I too agree with everyone. Go in when light. You benefit nothing by going in now. Go in first light, find your deer, gut, and drag when you can see. From the sounds it's definitely a dead deer, I think you may have pushed it though... Let her go, you may be farther back then you think and hit liver. Deer can last a long time with a live hit, up to 5 or so hours and travel hundreds of yards if pushed.
  24. Wmig2 I don't agree. I only have 25. My brother and I pass quite a few. Matter of fact, I have passed the last 8 or 9 buck. Will this benefit us, probably not. However, I feel good knowing we tried. It doesn't mean next year I'll pass I'm just saying I felt the need.
