  1. Don't under estimate the use of scents In the woods. I only use estrous scent. I prefer to use during the pre-rut. If a buck comes through, he might not be able to resist the urge to follow his nose. Once many does are in estrous, there is too much competition and I feel the mature bucks prefer the "real" "fresh" scent. I'll always have a can of buck bomb in my bag this time of year. It is by far my favorite.

    Rut!

Ok, I'm in 9P so should be good really soon.

    Rut!

I think we are still 10 days away. I haven't heard of a lot of deer/car collisions.

    Rut!

I don't know that type of grunt...
  5. Bowman, First off, take deep breath and relax. As they have stated, call deer search. It's never a waste of time, the handler and dog find passion in these recoveries. Also, tremendous learning experience for all parties. If that deer wasn't pushed last night, he's dead close by. Unfortunately, this incident is quite common, eventually it will happen to all hunters. If deer search does not have success in the recovery you at least know you put forth the very best attempt. Good luck.
  6. Bowman, these guys have a lot of experience and are 100% spot on. A gut or intestines severed means dead deer-100% of the time. If you didn't push the deer, keep looking he should be somewhere within 250 yards. If you pushed him and you only know If you did, he could travel a long long ways. Gut hits can take 12+ hours for them to expire. Good luck...
  7. Hey Greg, I live in SANBORN, if I can help let me know.
  8. This is Lily - my Daughter named her. 16 month old Boxer. My first boxer. She's awesome and to think I didn't want her.
  9. I actually don't think the wind effects deer. I've been trying to be particularly conscious on windy days. What I've noticed, I see just as many deer if not more during the wind. Last year on a 30 or 40 mph wind, I headed out late. I got in my stand at 11am. I saw 130" 8 point and a bear on that sit. They walked around without a care. I think if we hunted as hard in the wind we would see just as much activity on those days that we say, "this is perfect hunting conditions, today's the day."
  10. I would never "fix" a tine. It somehow lessens or cheapens the harvest. If it's that important wait until next year and harvest him then.
  11. This is a good question, a fair question, a surprisingly tough question to answer. I'm an average hunter, I put most, if not all my time into archery. I try to take a doe for meat then I get selective. In my area, good 6 points are rare and 8's really tough to come by. Plus, I only have 25 acres. I try to pass anything 6 and smaller in Oct and first week of Nov. After that, I'll take any deer. I rarely hunt more than 2 days during gun season, especially if I have had success during archery season. It all depends on weather, availability to hunt, situations. As others have stated, if legal, do as you please.
  12. This guy was 5 yards from me when I noticed him. Couldn't hear him with the crazy wind and rain. I had to let him walk until he finally went into my shooting lane. I let my 100 grain muzzy fly at 32 yards. It hit him a little back or I thought. I let him go 6 hours. My Dad and started at impact and found him 75 yards later. The 3 blade muzzy found both lungs. Awesome hunt and easy recovery. Thanks everyone.
  13. Update: I got him nice 8 point. Double lung, went 65 yards. I'll post pics later.
  14. Morning guys and gals. Hit a nice 6 at 735 this am. Winds were calm in 9P. 32 yards, hit him a little back, more like center of body. No pass through, fletching was 8 inches" out. He ran hard 75 yards and slowed down in thickets. I will give him 5 hours, hoping for liver.
  15. Just had a doe sprint under stand. Didn't even have time to blink.
  16. Let's hope he continues to make that same 9:01 trek. Good luck.
  17. I think yes as well. Substantially wide brow tines. They look wide in both pics.
  18. My neighbor has one and tracked for awhile. I think he retired her though. Keep the postings coming and continue your great success.
  19. Lol, we all do sooner or later.
  20. Wait a minute. First off, no reason to attack or assume anything. You don't know me and don't know my ethics whatsoever. I was merely sticking up for a fellow hunter that was attacked for possibly deciding to hunt in the rain. Btw, It's not unethical to hunt in rain. You have a lot of great posts and I respect your opinion as you seem to be a true outdoorsman but I feel you jumped to conclusions on this one.
  21. Too many people out there are worried about everyone else. Hunt if you want. Matter of fact, I think it proves your dedication. Next time it poors, I think I'll head out there.
  22. Yes, of course! You don't have to have one buck on the property.... but then during the rut bucks could be everywhere. Bucks can and will travel 5 miles looking for doe entering estrous.
