LIVE from the woods 2015 Edition! - Sixth Year Going Strong
Taylormike replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
That winter of last year is toughest on deer. Snow and frigid early until late spring. That's also why the deer taken this year are slightly larger and bigger racks. It's not pleasant but it's part of nature at its rawest. Us hunters have to continue to harvest them. We can help prevent this at least a little. -

Absolutely beautiful animal! Congrats!!! -
That's what I'm talking about! Gorgeous buck and fine looking recipient as well! Sorry guys but it's the truth. Awesome job to you guys this season! You do it the right way!
-
Guys I'm home and own 25 acres. I'd rather miss opener and most of gun season. Archery is my passion and put in close 60-70 hours on stand. Gun maybe 4. And yes gun season is way too long.

. I see a mount in someone's future!!! -
Yep, my budget is small. I'm thinking the 8n for money is great! Would love diesel with loader but that's just not happening at this time.
-
I too love coffee! A lot depends on how you drink it. I'm a straight up black and my favorites are probably any of the barista prima k-cups!

About the 8n's for food plots and Bush hogging? I'm thinking for the money they are hard to impossible to beat. I have middle buster, Bush hog. Just need 8n and a disc harrow and its food plot time, it will be my first. Btw, I already tested the soil.

Yes sir,I agree. Matter of fact, I just had 1.5 acres of 3 acre spruce farm on my property bull dozed. Already preparing for next season. Bow is my passion!

What is my best option?
Taylormike replied to Taylormike's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
JGS, They are spruce trees, an old farm. There are literally thousands of stumps. It was actually clear cut about 5 years ago. The tops and branches are tangled and laying on top and between the stumps. This is about a 3 acre parcel. We did see slight deer improvement but to be honest the deer really don't hang in it. Can you believe all the times we've pulled up to camp and put the lights on the field we only saw deer standing in it once. I know anything at this point will be an improvement. Btw, it's not walkable. We had to cut a 4 foot path through it with chainsaws and then brush hog it just to walk through this portion. It's 600 feet wide so we are at a point where it has to be graded. A 650 dozer is coming in, around 20,000 lbs. -

I'm thinking for the time and money, the green grass is my best option. -
The bottom-line and moral to this story, don't hunt where houses border the property's. It's inevitable that sooner or later this unfortunate circumstance will arise.

Ok, too many questions and circumstance to get into a defined plan. We never have a problem seeing deer but it's used as means to cut through. I need them to want to stay around a little. I will cut it and let the green grass come up. -
I have a question on what is my best option for drawing deer. I'm having 1 acre cleared of stumps soon. When vegetation begins to grow in the spring I'm wondering what would be best to attract deer during archery season. I won't have time to invest in food plot here just yet. The food plot I'm putting in is near my tree stand at the back of the property. Do you think I should let the grass grow tall and not cut it at all? Should I keep it cut with bush hog, about 4" or so? Should I half a$$ it and just disc it and throw some seed? I know without having soil test, lime, fertilizer I'm probably wasting some money. Please let me know what you guys think or would do.

Big Bear for sure. I last week saw my first bear while on stand. I always said I wouldn't shoot one. Now that I saw one, I would definitely shoot. However, few questions: How to get out of woods? Do you take to a processor, eat all the meat? Take it to taxidermist and get what done; full mount is probably ridiculously expensive, rug, etc. Guys that have some insight or experiences let me know what you did. Thanks!

I passed 3 bucks, (all small) and 4 doe during my week off. Today is my last day at camp. I just hit a doe. Getting warm and coffee and going to track in a few hours. -

Since we are braving these ridiculous elements please let's have a lil movement. Just let of a buck bomb... -
I gut deer down next to camp, about 150 yards from cabin. The reason being is so I can easily clean up, fill out tags, etc. Also, I place the guts in front of one of my game cameras. You see everything, including deer. Rest assured, deer are not at all spooked by the smell. Not the slightest bit.

Strangest thing you have seen/ have had happen while hunting
Taylormike replied to ApexerER's topic in General Hunting
I was bored and decided to take two substantial saplings and aggressively hit them together. Not taking it to serious, I non chalantley turn around and have a see a nice 6 point running towards me. Unfortunately, I never re-nocked an arrow after getting out of the treestand and there he goes. It was so cool. I think to this day some people don't believe me.
