I'm with you guys, been planning now 3 weeks. My buddy who does food plots extensively for over 10 years says he has had best luck with 3 pieces of equipment. Spring tooth cultivator, disc, and cultipacker. He told me to focus on those 3. He said the bottom plow turns over way too many dormant seeds and clay. He said a tiller is impossible where he is because of the rocks. He told me to take it slow and start there.

So far I'm impressed with Whitetail Institute, you can call them and actually speak to a human. I'm not sure if they're titled agronomist but they might as well be, very knowledgeable.

I'm a newbie and no where capable of blending my own seeds. I'll try their products and go from there.

Interesting, what manufacturer of Tall Tines did you plant?

Did the deer respond to Tall Tines in October and November? Did they eat the leafy vegetation and then move on to the turnips?

Well, to be honest this is disappointing to hear. I've read some great things about food plots. Either way, I'm stubborn as can be and plan on doing this plot as as best I can. I'm hoping to get an increase of deer activity both on and off season. I plan on showing a lil of the process as well as posting my deer activity pre and post plot.

Wow, I've been thinking the opposite. I was planning to go by the book and do this as professional as possible. I figured I would take the all in approach and go for it. Interesting to hear a lot of plotters say it isn't necessary.

I'm surprised Tall Tine Tubers aren't getting hit. My friend uses it and literaly has a dozen or so deer every night in the plot.

Well, I actually own a small diesel tractor. 18hp diesel. Only about 2000 lbs. I figured this would be way too small but thinking an atv can do it then my tractor could. There's always so much to consider.

Good information. Yes, I have done soil samples, very acidic, 5.0. I'm literally going to have to spread 2 to 3 tons of lime.

I plan on planting tall tine tubers from whitetail institute, about 3/4 acre.

Food plotters, I have a question. This year my brother and I are putting in our first food plot. We won't have a huge budget. We will get a tractor, probably 8N as you can find them at reasonable prices. I have as middle buster already, will I need a bottom plow? I have a York rake, will I need a cultipacker? I think a tiller is out of the question, too many rocks. Will a 6ft disc be adequate? How about a spreader? Is this a must for spreading pellitized lime? We are committed and I'll be shopping hard in the next 2 months. Please let me know your thoughts.

Absolutely can be him. They'll travel those distances easily, especially this time of the year. I'm sure they'll occasionally travel 20+ miles.

A lot of this post is accurate but I wonder how many shots end up being off target at close range too. It takes smart and ethical shot decisions. It also takes a lot of practice, many of us need to continue to shoot throughout the season including me. It takes good working equipment. I recently yelled at my Uncle to put new broadheads on, not the ones he has shot dozens of times at a target. Also, buck fever is a real thing, it takes time for some hunters to control their emotions. It would be interesting to hear from a dog tracker, I'm sure they see some interesting things.

I'm with the majority of you this year. It's by far the most disappointing season ive had in 7 years. I hunt two locations, one behind my house in 9A (3acres, the other 9P (24acres) my camp. Behind my house is tough, its for an hour sit here and there. Fortunately on Oct.3rd after sitting 40 minutes I took a mature doe. I thought now camp awaits me. My Bro and I take off nearly two weeks every year for the rut. I saw 8 buck 6 doe. Of the 8 buck, I passed 6 of them. The other 2 were out of range. Here's the kicker, 5 of the 8 buck and 2 doe were seen on the 2nd day of the two week vacation. I hunted 12 more days to see a deer here and there. These are long days in the woods, a few dark to dark. The rut was almost nonexistent or seemed to be in my area. As Moog stated, "That's the way the cookie crumbles". As a result of this, I've already sent a soil sample in to Whitetail Institute and my Bro and I are planning 3/4 acre hunting/food plot.
