  1. hell of a shot man. Hard to believe you missed a doe with that accuracy!
  2. there is something off about this picture. This kid looks like he's never been in the woods and just got done playing fortnite.
  3. I think more hunters subscribe to this than some think. We're all part of a public board, but out of the 200k hunters in NY, many probably don't even have a smart phone haha. I will say that I have left a few off this board because I know it's public and every boarder is hunted by a neighbor that knows us.
  4. i dont think anyone is, or should be bragging. But I get what you're saying. I put this reg in the same bucket as 7 rounds in a mag.
  5. The rut activity in 8F is intense. tons of scrapes and they're all being torn up and fresh. Had a good sit last night. I'll tell my story soon.
  6. ditto. just another distraction in the stand too. right around kavanaugh, and knowing the midterms were coming I knew it was time to take a break. I enjoy my peaceful sits a lot more.
  7. sometimes we see these deer and they're legit, and then sometimes (more often unfortunately) a week or 2 goes by and the story comes out.
  8. 17. that question about a 2' wide trail - passthrough / single lung is debatable.
  9. what you describe is exactly what it's all about. Different conditions present different opportunities. Even if the 30 minute rule was in affect, there are plenty of days (especially with archery) where i'd be getting down 5 minutes past sunset. Legal is not always ethical.
  10. why is that deer on a picnic table? Shit the effort to lift that bruiser up there. haha.
  11. Yeah i remember. I see i posted my same views then as I have now. There's also a handful of people here that believe everything is a conspiracy. I'm pretty libertarian when it comes to regulations and I understand the reluctance to adopt anything new. But if it's a compromise I'd be for it. My other assumption is that most hunters, particularly archers hunt those 30 minutes anyhow.
  12. We're aligned in why Steve hunts. With all do respect, I've seen every episode of his (halfway through the latest) and listened to many of his podcasts. He is not the type to choose words like "harvest" to sugar coat what he does. But "natural born killers" is not something I have ever heard him come close to saying. Instead, as posted above, I believe he would use the term "natural predator". He has shot plenty of non-trophy animals on his show without concern. The opening of every show is "I live to hunt, and hunt to live. I am a meat eater". I think that sums it up best. And while I certainly cannot speak for Steve, I don't think he would ever refer to himself as a killer. But would also never shy away from admitting and discussing that part of the hunt either. Like many of us, for him hunting was a part of his roots. The episode where they take his buddies dad hunting is great and you can really sense how much he misses his dad and the memories of hunting. More than any meal or horn. Just my thoughts.
  13. on public land I think it should be that way. In MS, you could remove your BO if 12' or higher in a tree or in an enclosed blind. On private land, it should be a choice as it is now. Hunters get an extra hour a day, and maybe one of the best 30 minutes of the day and all we sacrifice is some orange that most all of us wear during gun season anyhow? win!
  14. do you really not have an arrow nocked in the morning? Plenty of morning sits I've had deer around me in the dark. I certainly would want to be ready if they're still there when legal light hits and not moving all around in the stand.
  15. there's a member here who isn't really active anymore whose watch would beep at legal times. Imagine a nice buck working his way in at sunrise and your watch beeping?
  16. 20 minutes before legal sunset is not even close to dark. legal sunset is barely dark.
  17. There probably are stats. I imagine this is one of those regs, that is very similar to that of the rifle ban in many counties. After decades of research proved them unfounded, the state thankfully changed their mind. But in this culture of gun fear... I just don't know about this one ever being changed, and the guy who shot the woman walking her dog last year (i think 45 minutes after legal light?) across a road, on to posted property with a pistol... well that isn't going to help. Well known i lived in the south for a few years. the 30 min rule is in effect there, but they also have mandatory blaze orange (regs actually describe how much is needed) and safety harnesses (above 12' in the air) on public land regulations. I wonder if anyone would agree to the later 2 if it also came with the 30 minute rule. Not that harness has anything to do with the 30 minute reg.
  18. what's funny is that we get angry "live from the stand" posts every year bitching about these shots. While I know they're not all deer, your point is that we shouldn't just assume it's a poacher. fwiw, i don't categorize 20 minutes before sunrise poaching. But an hour? yes. haha
  19. most states are 30 min before and after. I've had some days where I wouldn't have a good visual 5 minutes after sunset and I've hunted others where I could probably hunt 45 minutes after. It depends on the canopy, the weather, snow, moon, field hunting etc. I think hunters should hunt ethically. And what is ethical is not always legal. For example, dispatching a wounded deer well after legal light.
  20. I think you may have misread some of the reason's steve hunts. Hard to find his early seasons (not on netflix), but what I enjoy the most about his style and approach is that he hunts for many reasons. I don't think he would like the label "natural born killer" at all. He has great respect for all the animals he hunts. Food is certainty key, but mostly he will talk about the adventure, challenge and the journey with his friends and relatives. His podcast is also very good.
  21. had one land on my nocked arrow once. thought that was pretty cool. wish i got a picture
  22. i assume that's your tinder profile pic. "open to all ladies, regardless of how much hair"
  23. never ran into a porcupine. despite them sending some quills into you or your pet, are they a pest or nuisance?
