Why cell service so bad in Adirondacks?
Five Seasons replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
although myself and few others have already mentioned how we like escaping to the Adirondacks, I just want to highlight again how much I love the idea of the area being one of the last frontiers out there. google raquette lake and pull it up on google maps. Then just zoom out a little and start exploring. It is amazing how vast that area is, especially if you've ever hiked even a small part of it, you'd really have an appreciation. It's rare that you'll hunt any land south of the Adirondacks and not be able to still hear loud motorcycles or cars off in the distance or more likely still, dogs barking and kids yelling. You probably find trash and stuff that has drifted into your woods and for sure you deal with trespassing. You get none of that in daks and that makes it pretty amazing and special to me. -
the thing about predicting the results is that many other states already have them. It's the same discussion every time we bitch about crossbows or season lengths, shooting times. There are many other northern states we can look to for results. I have never made my mind up on ARs. A few years ago I'd probably be all for it. But then I get a weird year like last year and the only deer I had a shot at during archery was a 4 point. Not even a doe. And it wasn't for lack of stand time. Ultimately I tend to subscribe to small government and less regulations and I also believe a lot of hunters are not exactly saints with all game laws. Lets be honest, if you can cutup your own deer and can refrain from sharing on social media there is a very small chance you ever get caught with anything on private land. Which is most of our southern zone.

I was just talking with someone about this. I was in college when we got that brutal October snow storm that crippled Buffalo. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Some closure for yall. I was quoted $6k cash to install a generac 8.5k NG system. While I didn't exactly go shopping all around, I imagine it wouldn't be plus or minus all that much if I did. While that solution still appeals to me for all the reasons we discussed, I just couldn't bight the bullet there. So I did ended up with a 7.5k portable, a small little shed to store it in, a 14 gallon gas tank and an interlok kit that will allow me to selectively load feed my house. Anyone interested in an interlok needs a brain and some sense or you can damage your generator and appliance through overloading. At 7.5k however, I am setup to run everything but luxuries like washer, dryer, dishwasher, microwave, a/c and pool pump. The pool pump can be run if I turn the freezer off. So electric range is out, but gas hot water and gas furnace are in. Plus venison grills nice Anyhow some careful online purchasing to avoid taxes and shipping and I'm all out $1.6k and this includes some extras like the shed, alarm, extra fuel storage and stuff that isn't mandatory. Happy to assist anyone interested in this setup. Kind of funny to say that I'm excited for the first outage lol. parts list below. generator $849.00 http://apelectric.com/westinghouse-wgen7500-7500w-electric-start-portable-generator/ interlock $69.00 https://www.ebay.com/itm/ITE-200A-Murray-Siemens-ITE-Generator-interlock-kit-150-or-200-Amp-Panel-Listed/290991018931?hash=item43c06a93b3:g:8AEAAOxyUrZSvv5n:sc:USPSFirstClass!14580!US!-1 shed $248.39 https://www.target.com/p/small-horizontal-storage-shed---vanilla---suncast/-/A-52276235 inlet box $48.99 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Reliance-Controls-30-Amp-Power-Inlet-Box-PB30-Free-Shipping/173570073405?hash=item286995233d:g:Yt8AAOSwLXtambg2 cord $59.39 https://www.homedepot.com/p/Reliance-Controls-10-ft-30-Amp-Generator-Power-Cord-PC3010/202216498 gas tank $106.92 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MT94QA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3V7LDN4P7B47B&psc=1 breaker $10.56 https://www.homedepot.com/p/Siemens-30-Amp-Double-Pole-Type-QP-Circuit-Breaker-Q230U/100002289 electrician $80.00 wire $104.73 https://www.homedepot.com/p/Southwire-50-ft-10-3-Solid-Romex-SIMpull-CU-NM-B-W-G-Wire-63948422/202316239 shed security $46.38 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002YP5FE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017M5TCHW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 powerback alarm $42.00 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Utility-Power-Back-Alarm-for-Portable-Generator-THP108-Reliance-Controls/292443523406?hash=item4416fe094e:g:qmwAAOSw-ddapFh4:sc:USPSFirstClass!14580!US!-1:rk:2:pf:0 total $1,665.36

How much did you spend this year preparing for the season?
Five Seasons replied to Core's topic in General Hunting
Every year I think I'm good. Typically have one or 2 things I will upgrade and probably on average about $50 worth of replenishable stuff, including soaps, sprays and butchering/dressing stuff. But without fail I end up spending a few hundred. This year I upgraded a facemask and some snow camo. But I also started getting gear for my 6 year old. Mostly to keep him warm. So it's adding up again haha. -
My routine has always been to let it hang overnight. Sometimes 2 if the temps are cool and I'm busy. But I tend to skin and bone the next day followed by ground the day after.
-
Just curious, because I've always wondered this. Does removing the hide and then keeping it like this dry the meat out at all, or toughen up the outer layers?
-
Been a tough fall for sure. A few of those "perfect days" mixed in with a lot of wind, rain and even a heat wave. Probably saving a lot of deer for the orange army if the weather breaks by then. I know I really could have used some of this rain in the summer when my lawn and vegetable garden was dying. I'm really curious if this will translate into a lot of snow this winter. This next week in 8F doesn't look like it's getting any better.

What Could or Possibly Also May Be in your Hunting Area
Five Seasons replied to nobody's topic in General Hunting
This is a really good site for hunting, and it's hard to stay away for that very reason. Speaking from personal experience, even when you try to stay out of the other crap it can suck you in. If you can look past that, there are some really good members and even better information. However, there is a small group that for whatever reason, runs the show here. And they've pushed more than a few members away. *shrugs* -
Why cell service so bad in Adirondacks?
Five Seasons replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
My parents have a cabin near Raquette. I have ATT, wife has sprint, most of the family has verizon. At certain spots in an otherwise dead zone I can get a bar. Enough to eventually get the weather or a sports score. Nobody else gets anything. But got 10 miles in one direction to inlet or Raquette and everyone but my wife can get reception. I'm not an expert on cell towers vs tv towers, but I know when I was looking at an antenna to get football games there wasn't a chance in hell. The topography (as you know) just doesn't allow for good comms. I imagine the open plains allow a signal to travel farther and easier. I know your question was innocent enough, but I think your tone and the safety card through some people off. To beat a dead horse, safety is extremely important, but people have been hunting those big woods a long time before cell service. -
I'm confused with what you disagree with me on. You stated that people align their shooting habbits with the when they can and can't visibly id their target. I agree with this. Doc, was stating that if you wade it 30 past, people would start hunting 45 minutes past. It's the old speed limit argument. My point was, when I hunted in a state with the 30 minute rule I didn't hear any shots before or after 30. Because it's just too dang dark. I have not idea what crossbows has to do with any of this.

Why cell service so bad in Adirondacks?

My favorite part of going to the Adirondacks is my lack of cell reception. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I’ve heard this before and will respectfully disagree. Anyone who hunts past sunrise and sunset now certainty doesn’t stop at 30 past. They make their own judgment call. And when I hunted down south you never heard a shot past or before 30. It just didn’t happen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It should always bother you. If it doesn’t, you should stop hunting. It’s human. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Glad this all worked out man. I know it sucks on your end, but I enjoyed following your story from the couch. I had a very similar shot years ago. Single lung, liver and out the guts. The intestines plugged the exit and I had no blood. 3 hours of grid search and there he was about 80 yards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk- 10374 replies

Sometimes people forget that hunting in the rain isn’t just about hunter comfort or deer movement, but use caution with archery. Broadheads cut. They bleed and too much rain and a less than stellar hit can result in a lost blood trail and deer. So don’t beat yourself up too much guys. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk- 10374 replies
