  1. What? Really? Why? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  2. that's what i did. Right at the edge of an inlet and a small lake. even used some ny legal "lure". we had a good cold snap there and then bam. heat. So i imagine they're shut down pretty good except middle of the night to raid campers coolers. if it's too warm even for deer...
  3. Got home sunday after my first hunt. Not what i expected. Hunted saturday morning and afternoon and again sunday morning. Didn't hear a shot across the loud echoing Adirondacks i was hunting in. i think the weather killed the weekend. 80*, mosquitoes and sweat is not what i had envisioned. looking forward to trying again next year.
  4. i bought a scentlok tote a few years ago on sale for like $30. they're normally $75. Comes with carbon absorber but it's really nothing fancy, just a good latching well made tote. i found ziploc now makes some really good sealable totes for very cheap and bought some. I too used to use the bags, but like the totes now for storage. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ziploc-60-Qt-WeatherShield-Storage-Box/45630858
  5. that's because you're a hunter. To a non-hunter a lot about letting someone on your land is trust. Honestly, maybe it doesn't exist much more in modern america, but the local down the road with a welcome offering of something personal can be much more appealing to an out of towner with a check book. These new neighbors now have a local that they can trust for advice and to watch their back. You can't buy that with money.
  6. in all seriousness, it really does show you how precious land has become and is unequivocally the largest obstacle affecting the modern hunter.
  7. metals have become much better over time. I know my 03 silverado had shit brake lines like everyone else. They've phased in a new metal and it isn't a problem. A lot of newer cars and trucks are just built better to withstand the salt. Doesn't mean you shouldn't get her washed a few times with a good underbody spray in the winter, but it's better than the 90's. Even if that means some ugly plastics around the wheel wells and rockers.
  8. again, rich is relative. property taxes on ag land is a lot less than you might expect. they're, their and there and you're and your.
  9. I'm going blackbear hunting this weekend. With a 30-06 and figured by glock .40 wasn't as good as my kimber .45 for backup. So yeah... exciting and screw loose go together I think lol.
  10. yeah i feel that's probably the most common way in NY.
  11. recurve from the ground bear hunt? brass balls right there
  12. in the sticks on a forclosure house, it could be. Heck i saw some dumps when house hunting last year on 40 acres. The further out into the sticks, the cheaper it becomes. So maybe they're not dirt poor, but there's no guarantee they're loaded.
  13. I think this point shouldn't go overlooked. 2 dudes pissing match might be enough for them to deny you both. I for sure wouldn't want that headache when there's nothing in it for me.
  14. who said they were rich? an old vacant horse farm doesn't imply rich.
  15. that just tells you how much more difficult it is without bait lol.
  16. getting ready for bear hunting i've been trying to find good hunting videos and they dont exist. I've come to the realization that most are just what you described and in my opinion, not very sporting or really what interests me about hunting. I sort of like the fact that NY doesn't allow bait for deer or bear, although hunting bear without bait is much harder. I'm going to use some scents (under 1.5oz lol). But the guided bear hunts over bait just don't really sound appealing. If I can shoot one unguided not over bait in the daks I'll be one happy hunter and I'll feel a lot more accomplished then shooting one over a barrel.
  17. mine get taken out too. Never enough damage to ruin them. I've thought about putting a video trail cam on them but it's only once or twice a year. I tend to think it's the youngsters.
  18. an interesting one for sure. My wife's grandparents own an active fruit farm in webster. I was given permission to hunt it the summer we married, then found out one of their hands hunts it. To me I didn't feel like I should setup on his turf as he does a great deal for her elderly grandparents and had been hunting it a while. Just marrying into the family gave me the ability to swipe it all from him. Already having some hunting land myself I let it be. The guy knows I hunt and knows I passed on the opportunity and has never said anything to me the few times our paths have crossed, but I'm sure deep down he breathed a sigh of relief. In your situation this is new territory but also sounds like the owners would open up the land to just about anyone. Unfortunately the handyman probably should have stated to them his desire to have the property to himself as he could very well be considering this good land as part of his "payment". So I guess my thought is this, your time to act is now. This is the first year and the only chance before he digs in. Stop by the new owners place again with some offering like a bottle of wine or venison sausage etc. Explain you talked to the handyman and the situation (leaving out his attitude) and see what they think. Perhaps you can take a back 50 or something. 250 is A LOT of land for one guy. However what you don't know is if he will have an army with him and conversely he doesn't know the same about you. And if all else fails, there's the checkbook and lease papers to consider if you want it bad enough.
  19. very solid book, it would probably be deemed a got knockoff when it really came so long before martin's series.
  20. I work for a dod contractor. we raised the flag this morning to a live rendition of the national anthem. 'Merica!
  21. I own an explorer, I'm not loyal to any brand. I buy based on features, deals and reviews. I've owned asian, domestic and european. But you're the first I've heard to say anything real negative about the new chevy's. Also I've modified just about every car I've owned in some way or another, but putting 35's and a lift kit on a truck doesn't come without some risk from the original design and operation. Now I agree that any truck should be able to handle that, but to shit on the bowtie and leave that part out isn't fair either.
  22. seems like the state needs to work on the ratio. start allowing more dmp's and keeping the ar's for a while. Don't open the flood gates but at least improve the odds.
  23. was your chevy new? lots of guys will hate on a brand after buying used. I never felt that was fair. I have a 16 and 2 recalls doesn't seem like a record. I think it was an airbag sensor and something else minor done with my oil change and i was out.
