  1. I guess I didn't realize I was talking to an expert on the gun trade. My point still stands, what headline sounds better? Illegal gun used in murder or the one taken from parent? If the kid has access to a key or the combination, that's not necessarily a gun safe now is it? Don't be silly when you know my point is valid. Making the guns INACCESSIBLE to kids is what needs to happen. Do you have kids? There's no freaking way I want a teacher with a gun on her hip... and despite what you and your small circle of friends think, there's no way that ever happens. I'm ok with armed guards. Many inner city schools already have them. But don't bitch when your taxes go up. Hell I paid over $3k for school taxes in NY. These armed guards aren't free. I'd write the check; but would you?
  2. Doc, I think you're taking your personal experience and assuming it's the case everywhere. We have more stuff because society has taught us to be materialistic. There's more than a few here who made it clear they don't have a ton of money or things because they'd rather enjoy life... and americans are in crazy debt because they can't afford the things they want. I think it's personal choice and not a forced lifestyle on how many hours you work and what you expect to earn. I work for one of the largest company in the world... I've had 3 positions in my salaried career with 2 companies. As I've grown, my salary has gone up and so have my responsibilities. None of the moves were forced upon me, I chose them. Mostly so that my wife could stay home with my boys.
  3. so our kids should be armed? Or are we arming teachers? which citizens being armed do you expect to prevent these murders? What person walks into a school with a knife and kills 20+?
  4. 1. the kids breaking in to a safe? 2. I didn't say wouldn't... I said might not. There is a criminal code. Prisons are full of them, but most don't tolerate pedophiles and rapists. The illegal gun trade is primarily made up of gangs selling to eachother to murder each other. Society looks the other way until one is sold to a kid who murders his classmates. I'd like to see the middle class white kid successfully pull off a street buy. Not impossible, but again he's either cracking a safe or going downtown where he's robbed of his money. If the headline is "kid buys illegal gun off street" or "kid gets gun from mom's unlocked closet" which goes over better for gun rights?
  5. you're missing the forest through the trees. Guns don't kill people, bad people do. And today, there are more bad people. So what worked in the past does no longer work. Society has evolved. It's ok to smoke weed in some states, it's ok for gays to marry in most states. We evolve and in some aspects of culture we've gotten worse and more troubled. So stop dwelling on the past and realize that today's kids are messed up. That is what this concert is trying to address. Mental health. But simply clinging to the world you grew up in and ignoring that today's world is not the same will just lead to more and more tragedies.
  6. You're missing my point. For the final time, I'm not asking for legislation, I'm asking for education. It should not be easy for a teen to buy a gun. A teen can't smoke, vote, go to war, gamble, watch a dirty movie, buy a dirty magazine or drink. So if you were raised like me, you probably had a .22 and then a 12 gauge you used for hunting. You were taught gun safety very early on and if you did even the slightest dumb thing you got your ass chewed out. Heck, until I demonstrated I was responsible, my .22 was in the safe unless dad was with me. The kids from columbine, sandy hook etc obviously weren't taught those things and had mental issues. If my sons display those signs, no matter how much it would hurt they wouldn't have access to guns... and no store should be allowed to sell to a minor either. So, no I'm not asking for hoops. But is a simple background check and verification of age really that bad? Is it too much to ask that we lock or trigger guard our guns? How many of you don't have a safe?
  7. It is unfortunate the NY jobs have fallen so far because it use to be that if you didn't like it, the guy next door was hiring. As a salaried professional I could put on cruise and keep my job, but probably not continue to climb... However even in cruise my employer expects you to push yourself and I don't find that unreasonable. Honestly I know some guys who just don't work smart, so they put in more hours than me with less results. There, of course are dozens of books on this subject. I'll keep doing what I'm doing until I feel it's keeping me from being there with my kids. That's my line, not hunting... But family. I'll agree with phase that entertaining the head hunters is important.
  8. how do you even enforce or measure that regulation? What if i'm walking to the truck and cross a field where there's a tom? Do I wave and pass by? Can I not use my locator to get to a good spot nearby? What if I'm just run and gunning? Is that illegal?
  9. If the kid is denied a gun, and the mom locks up hers he's going to really have to work hard to get one. I think that's all most people really want. Make it freaking difficult. Yes, you can't stop everything but lets not make it easy for God's sake. Make this suburban white kid go down to a city corner to buy an illegal gun. Make it freakin hard. Maybe the criminal doesn't even sell it to the suburban white kid knowing what he might do. It's not urban crime anymore. There is no street code and maybe he doesn't get the gun. And yes, beef up the illegal gun laws. Fry them!
  10. We use something called the newspaper test when we get into gray areas at work. You're infighting with conservative gun owners and ignoring the very large population of americans who are on the fence about guns or aren't a big fan. So take off your "what makes sense, and what will really work" hat and consider the social media, over reacting society we live in... whether you like it or not and think about this. New York Times, D&C etc. "Gun Right Advocates Lobby to Allow Guns Back in School Zones" and then tell me how you think that'll go over with our cause to keep the rights we have... which are already less than what we had 2 years ago.
  11. i guy who lives in a city and isn't dressed in dirty jeans and a camo hat going rabbit hunting. A suit and tie, a hoody, skinny jeans in a lexus or civic with a shotgun on the passenger seat. Not the s10 with the gun rack.
  12. yep I'm the problem If the mother of the sandy hook shooter locked her guns up that would have helped wouldn't it? If he had proper mental health care that might have helped right? this whole thread started with awareness and training and not laws. So i'm not sure why you're ranting on laws. I work in safety, and it's common knowledge that we know you cant prevent all accidents and you can't idiot proof stuff. I never once asked for more laws, but I did ask if you were all comfortable with guns in a school parking lot. So stop pretending like your fellow gun owner who left the state because of the repressive government is asking for more laws and regulations. I'm just stating that common sense laws already in place like background checks and gun free zones do not hurt anyone. In all of Mr VJPs rant, I never once saw a solution to gun violence in schools. Just ranting and raving about how we should have them in our parking lots. And then I remind myself that he doesn't have young kids in school.
  13. I wont disagree that I haven't stuck my foot in my mouth a time or 2. I've learned a lot here and that's why I stick around. But, maybe I'm blind to it, so please help me understand where I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth here? I've lived in 3 different major cities, different states and traveled the world. It has taught me that we're all different. What is acceptable in Horseheads, NY is not in Jersey City. Gun laws are generally federal and State until a governor feels he's above the constitution. So with that in mind, I believe we need some common sense gun laws and unfortunately both sides of the fight take it to the extreme. Evil black guns vs. No control at all. And simply put, I don't believe some of the folks here when they say they wouldn't think twice about the urban or arab with the gun.
  14. because nobody answered If I remember right you have kids. Why don't you just answer my question? I don't care what the grandpas on here think about guns in schools. I care about what today's parents think. I ask the question because many of you good ole' boys seem to not care that the rusted out silverado with dirty ball cap wearing guy has a gun in his truck. But should it be a new cadillac with a black guy in a hoodie or arab looking person I bet you react differently. What you all fail to see is that your version of the world no longer exists. If you're not going to introduce some level of gun control, then the guy taking his kid rabbit hunting is no different than the guy intending to do harm. A gun in the truck, is a gun in the truck. Guns are not evil, but some who use them are. Your simple refusal to say "hey guns shouldn't be around near schools" is just bafeling because you live in these little small rural towns and don't have a freaking clue of what going on in the world other than what you read about online. This isn't directed at the majority of you, but a select few... get out and freaking travel. Travel further than your local sporting goods store. Talk to people who don't have the same interests as you. The world is not black and white and to think it's ok to drive into a school in this day and age with a gun in the truck is just plain retarded.
  15. Work is what you make of it. There are hourly jobs out there that allow you to work a solid 40 and the occasional OT. It's up to many if they want that OT money. The salary role is different. Your phone is always on and you're expected to work more than the 40... But even still you can decide what level you want to climb to and what level of responsibility you want based off your goals and financial needs.
  16. Yeah don't get me wrong I have one on the vest, but would not use it on a stalk.
  17. It is sad indeed that times have changed, but just the same they have changed. I'm in my early 30's so I don't have the history some of you do, but you can't ignore the world we live in... What if that guy in a pickup was going hunting but was wearing a turban?
  18. You didn't answer my question. I'm really curious how those with little kids like myself feel about it. Do you think it's ok to pull up to a school with a gun in the rack?
  19. So just to clarify, with all the weirdos, pedophiles, nut jobs and sick bastards out there if you pull up to my sons school in your pickup with a shotgun in the rack I should just assume you're a good guy going rabbit hunting? Don't get me wrong, I know what point you're trying to make but there is no magic sticker that sorts out the good from those will ill intentions.
  20. what rock have you been living under? Most hunters are country music fans. It is one of the most popular genres of music. You may not like it, but millions do.
  21. Last weekend while turkey hunting I was thinking about typing this up... sort of a letter to the editor. Those of you familiar with social media probably know of buzzfeed. There's been some viral articles on there lately with respect to african game. I feel the majority of us NA hunters need a voice. I still might type it up some day, but in short for me. 1. I love nature and spending time in it. 2. The time with my thoughts, peace and quiet away from it all. 3. The challenge 4. The organic healthy meat and the pride knowing I provided it from my family
  22. I agree. I don't see the issue unless you're wearing and red and blue bandana and gobbling... which would be weird as you should be calling to sound like a hen.
  23. calling is more rewarding. I have no problems with getting up and stalking. Actually I enjoy that about turkey hunting versus deer hunting. If I hear a gobble far away around 8 I can get up and stretch my leg instead of just sitting there bored for 2 more hours. I haven't been much for road side calling. We have miles of dirt road here on public land and frankly the road callers bother me. Once last year they actually screwed me up on a bird coming in... I guess I find it disrespectful to other hunters and sort of lazy. But stalking on private land or empty public land is totally fine and pretty fun.
  24. that looks comfy but I don't think it would work for the type of turkey hunting I like. My cheap turkey vest leaves a lot to be desired in the comfort dept though. I want one of those vests with the tent legs that stick out the back.
