It's no different than asking why'd you buy a mustang instead of a camaro. It's a discussion board. I've learned lots on this site by asking questions. -

Do you really think the ar platform was designed for hunting and not combat? Is that what colt had in mind? Was hunting the reason the picatiny rail was introduced? If so why doesn't every Hunter, hunting show and magazine feature them? That is what I meant and you know it. Not that it can't be used to hunt, but that was 100% not the idea behind the platform. -

I play videogames and own guns. Ones that illegal in NY. What I was agreeing with a few others that the reason people buy ARs is because they're bad ass. -

The kid who thinks the AR is cool is because he knows how bad ass it is at killing bad guys. You also just proved stubby' point on why guys buy ARs. -

I have a coworker with several full autos and supressed weapons. Spent a Saturday with him destroying stuff. Honestly walked away with a grin you couldn't wipe off if you tried and chubby in my pants. Some of the most fun I've ever had. Would I ever spend $30k on an mp5? Hell no, but it was fun to shoot. The guy is super responsible. But unfortunately there are some idiots out there and we all suffer. If some idiot got his hands on a full auto supressed mp5, you better pray they don't come after your flintlock. That is the point. Responsibility. -

Most kids have grown up playing call of duty and probably know more about AR style rifles specs and capabilities without even shooting one than most guys on this site. Don't confuse your aunt and a 20 year old. -

I wonder why game laws say 5 or 6 and guys want to hunt with a gun built for 30. -

HOW DOES IT NOT!? You asked if functionally they were different. The answer is yes. What is confusing you? Anything that changes how you shoot makes it different by definition. I'm confused by why you don't want me to put in my dues to the NRA. Hope you burn your card if that's your attitude towards people on your side of the second amendment fight. I feel like walking down to the store right now to get an AR and several 30 round mags just because I can and you can't. I like you culver, but telling me to burn my card is down right the dumbest thing you've ever said. -

I know what you're getting at. But yes, the stocks are different. Making them functionally different. Sure the guts are the same, but not all their functions. Simply adding the bipod does, by definition make them different. -

work wont let me get on gun websites so i can't verify specs. But it comes down to mag size. what's the mag size of an autoloader marketed to hunters? and yes the image of the pistol grip, forearm grip and butt stock all change what is traditionally viewed as a hunting rifle. It's not really the color. The color of new synthetic bolt actions are black. It's that why am I using the same gun a marine uses to kill bad guys with? What are the advantages I asked. You guys gave them and I conceded. Then you went on to label me as an anti and uneducated etc. Clearly missing what I was getting at. If we can't have civil discussions with each other; how do we educate the second amendment fence sitters? -

I will continue to repeat that I am not against the AR. I just don't think it's doing us any favors in the deer woods. It's the one sacred ground the anti-gun group has had trouble with and know they can't make strides into. In the south there are more people wearing camo than hunters. Nobody views a guy in camo as anything but normal. And no, you do not need 10 rounds in an AR mag or any hunting gun (or is it 7 now?) to kill a deer. So yes culver, they are functionally different. But absolutely whole heartily i enjoy every one of my 13 rounds I have in my glock23. Don't tell me I need less. Self defense and hunting are not the same. -

The problem when "to each his own" ends up impacting all of us. And now, because "it was legal" or because there was poor eduction or insufficient safety controls involved, a kid from NJ made it illegal to buy an AR in NY. So sometimes, as hunters and gun owners trying to self regulate and promote our image is the best thing we can do to stop others from taking our rights away. -

nobody in this whole thread has stated they shouldn't be allowed or that they wouldn't kill a deer. Not once. The question has always been why? Does it really HELP the image of the hunter (enough anti's as it is) could you imagine the propaganda from this? Let alone the fighting we must do against anti-gun. Is this really that much different than those demonstrating their open carry rights in Target by walking around with ARs on their backs? Just because it's legal does not mean you're not hurting the cause. let alone in NY where it's worst state in the union to own a scary black gun, we have someone from out of state wanting to come and use his? Don't think about your own person views, think about what societies reaction would be. -

I've never looked, but I don't recall there being mag limits in the southern states except with waterfowl. If you don't need more than the 3 or 5 rounds in your semi; what again is the appeal of the AR? -

you continue to use childish name calling to defend your point and it doesn't help. The garands and mausers were still preferred by snipers. At least understand the advantages and disadvantages of the bolt action. They didn't just stop making bolt action guns when semi's came out. They didn't stop making semi's when autos came out. They didn't offer select fire on military rifles because they thought it was neat. We just had a thread talking about having both a 30-06 and 270. And it was pretty unanimous that someone should buy and own what he likes, but essentially they're not very different. A good percentage agreed that being good at one good precision tool is more valuable then being a master of none. So snipers (which are what all hunters should aspire to be) prefer the bolt action vs the infantrymen needing multiple rounds. -

I'm not ignorant. It's fact. More hunters in the USA hunt with a "traditional" bolt action rifle. So, yes I don't "get it". If you have a budget for 1 gun then the AR is probably your best choice for all around use. Hands down. If you sold a gold bolt action .30-06 for one to hunt, it does seem interesting to me. I don't picture a guy in a treestand with an AR. Doesn't make it wrong.Yes it's different. Yes it seems odd to me that a combat rifle would be used to go hunting. Yes I am a little worried that hunters walking through the woods in most states with 30 round mags might not help our 2nd amendment rights. Hunting is a big reason why we still have guns. Yes I have come within minutes of buying a colt down here in MS. Yes, I want one. Yes I can rent them at the local range and have had a blast shooting them. No I would most likely never take it into the deer woods. My pump action and pistols in my nightstand GV are my home defense, so in the end I couldn't justify buying one. is that what you wanted to hear? I thought yours fell into a lake anyhow? Who are you arguing with? I never made that claim. Hope you registered it you can find a couple of anything if you look at a large enough group. -
so the rut. you want to take the best 2 weeks of archery and make it doe only for gun hunters? I hope you're kidding. There are plenty of other times in the year to go doe only. Mississippi has the final week of bow either sex, but you can MZ hunt for doe only. I thought that was a pretty interesting take on it.

you're probably right. I don't know what a DEC guy makes and how thin their resources are, but if it's what I believe it to be, I do give them a little leeway. I mean, this is the government we're talking about. Very little they're doing right these days.

Believe what you want. The gun is essentially illegal in NY and I don't remember to many pics on this site where guys were using them, including you. The guy explained why he wanted to use one and that was the end of it, until you decided I was part of the anti-gun movement -
There is something to be said for switching it up though. I agree that I'd rather be good with one gun, but I enjoy mz season. Mostly because it's the same deer and weather as the end of fun season, but I feel like I'm doing something new and get a little more excited.

By "its place" I meant where it ranks as far as preference and efficiency. Not that it isn't allowed. I never once said that. -

Yes you're clearly superior in the intelligence department. Your grammar and punctuation have proven that. Continue to attack a fellow NRA member. Infighting should do our cause well. I have seen nothing but long guns on this site, until I see ARs become the rage among hunters, i will continue to believe the bolt action rifle is superior. Btw, back to your original question. Bring your AR to NY. Let us know how it goes. -

the site's been a little slow lately huh? Maybe we should talk more about hillary clinton and isis? God forbid we have a healthy debate on the ARs place in the hunting world. That has NOTHING to do with the site's focus. -
agree. I sometimes wonder if there is a big driver, or if it's a culmination of things. Reduced habitat, worse off economy leading to less time in the woods. Outfitters buying up land. More posted land. Hunters becoming more competitive and some infighting because of it. Agricultural decline? Less hunters? Harsher winters. Educated deer. lots of things to consider.
