they give you a diagram. basically you're looking at rack out to the ears or past the nose. I can't imagine trying to do it on a buck without real good conditions or one where it could be iffy. The one I got this year was clearly legal. I think that's why some states go with points instead... my concern would be the guy who measures out to 9.5... then is worried about getting in trouble so he might not tag it. It's certainly a flawed system. Oh I know... while we know 2.5's aren't mature I still think they're shooters for most. I don't believe the goal is that we're all shooting mature bucks. 3.5's are hard to kill. They'll go nocturnal quick, and they spook easy. I think the goal is to get past the spindly racks. I will continue to shoot this 2.5 year old type of buck I shot last year for many years to come until I'm old and retired or with a lot more time. I think most 20 and 30 somethings are in the same boat. The point problem comes with another 8 pointer I shot 3 years prior on the same land... The ARs dont really work here... but for my third season ever of bow hunting he was definitly a shooter. I was not a youth so this is where I struggle with ARs. A bow hunter has to cut his teeth. It's hard to cure buck fever for a bow hunter on doe.

Real tree snow?
Five Seasons replied to zeus1gdsm's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
i think a lot of the camo patterns are just driven by marketing and tv. Is real tree any better or worse than mossy oak? it's all about silhouette in the stand. I think snow can be good in the late fall early winter because you can help blend in with the sky. I do not believe your pattern of choice makes or breaks your hunt. Invest instead maybe in a stand blind, climbing higher and out of site, scent control or a ground blind. -
In MS there are ARs. For most of the state it's 10" spread and 13" beam. For the Delta where they grow bigger deer it's 12". You adjust for the region. You will never get 100% of the deer, but you will get a large percentage of them. To your second point, that's fair enough. It just seems that this site has a tendency to bash the trophy hunter and the meat hunter can do no wrong.

I prefer the spread and beam AR. 10" spread or 13" beam length. your trohphy hunters are what pays for the tags. Who honestly hunts because their wives shrubs are being eaten? with the exception of farmers hardly any of you are hunting because you want to control the heard. I agree that poaching is a problem, but sometimes I think we make it sound like everyone is a poacher. I have no idea what the stats are and we all know some bad eggs, but I believe generally most hunters are following the tagging rules. A poacher tomorrow is probably a poacher now. It wouldn't change much. We agreed on this forum a while ago not to judge hunters for why they hunt. If he hunts for horns we have to respect that. I hunt for horns too... after my freezer is full. I had more trouble hunting young doe on public land than mature bucks on private. It's all relative. I don't believe you have to be one or the other. You're simply a hunter. You should be in it for your own reasons and follow the rules while you're doing it... even if you don't like them. in most states with ARs they do not apply to youth. I wouldn't want them to apply to youth in NY either.

1. you need thousands of acres to effectively implement ARs. In NY that does not exists. Trying to manage ARs on a 30 acre piece will never work unless all your surrounding hunters agree. It's not that easy. 2. Public land is one of the best places to put in ARs. Shoot the doe and maybe you might actually see some decent deer if every fork and spike isn't being mowed down.

the DEC already tells you a lot of things. I also firmly believe that if deer were to magically lose their antlers you'd see 70% of hunters give it up. I hunt for meat first. But I love a rack. While it does not apply to some parts of the state, shooting a doe is usually easier and better tasting. the trophy folks are what has helped keep hunting going. Organization and money are very powerful. Look at crossbows for an example. The NRA is another example. While we may not all agree with their methods and all their ideas and goals, they generally help the sport. The outdoor and sportsman channel and all the magazines would not make money if hunters weren't interested in "trophies". I'd bet my Heuer that meat hunters don't read a lot of magazines and watch a lot of shows. They've most likely had their skills passed down to them. They do the same thing they've always done and they kill deer every year. Sometimes they get big bucks, but they're not running out and spending hundreds or thousands on gear. Look at Kentucky as a case study. the one buck rule brought that state back and it's now a destination for many out of state hunters. While the first few years of ARs will suck, i believe the end game will see better bucks and more interested hunters. your humble opinion is not fact, but studies in Kentucky are. do some research and get back to me

"AK style shotgun" crazy...

I'd prefer high 20's and some snow (not tons of it) over the sub zero temps. That kind of cold just plain sucks.

Often a politicians influence can be seen after they leave office. The argument could be made for him. I'm sure he did some stuff well. However as a conservative I'll never agree with the taxes. Look at the exodus of the states population and business and jobs as the only proof you need. To be clear, this state hasn't had a good governor in quite some time. -
I have walls snow camo. It's cotton like. Old school with no wind block but I don't wear it much anymore because it absorbs moisture and smell. Reversible too. Killed a bunch of deer in them. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Nobody but a few are singing his praises, nobody but a few are in favor of his politics. Most of us are fiscally conservative. Nobody said you were a bad father. Most of us don't like liberal taxes and their gun control. What we're trying to say is that it's amazing what people behind a keyboard will say about someone who just died without ever meeting them. If you're truly happy he is dead than I feel sorry for you. I'm not super religious but I try not to find happiness in the hurt and pain of others even if they do in mine. That's not how I was raised. Be the better man. Be the best parent and husband you can with what you have and work hard to do more. I'm fortunate to have a nice job. But I can honestly say of all the toys I've bought my 2 year old, none of them hold a candle to him and I playing in the yard, in the sprinkler, reading books or playing hide and seek. It's nice that I can afford an iPad and video monitor to help give us a break, but I do not NEED these things. We didn't NEED the $1200 crib and all the other crap. They're just "nice to have". We are not better parents for them. Do you think a kid would rather have the newest Jordan's to play ball in or would he rather his dad play pig with him after work? 95 out of 100 kids would pick the game of pig. What are you smoking? I don't agree with his politics either, but I'll never claim I could be any better of a person with more money. Life could be easier sure but it does not make anyone with more money any better than someone with less. I work very hard and would appreciate it if you leave my family out of this discussion, I have not brought in yours. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -

At Mario's you're not just a customer. You are my special friend. -
that's a hell of a price. heck it's about $20 just to put it on a plaque and wrap a capped rack.

really? so money prevented you from being a good husband, father and grandfather? That's complete bs. Billionares can be horrible parents and spouses and poor people can be some of the best most caring parents one could ask for. Money does not make the man. -
I'm having my first one done. Never a huge fan because I think they kind of have that road kill look to them, but when you have a nice buck that's not quite a mounted it does deserve a little something extra. I'm not sure if I love this or if I think it's tacky as hell. But it's an interesting option if you don't like the white. These were just google searches below.

I was going to tackle this project this year with my 9. After talking to my cousin who has done a few, I decided paying for it was a better deal haha. good luck.

I'm not saying anybody should be in tears. I don't agree with him or his son's politics, but the guy died. He's someone's dad, husband and grandfather. Give it a break for a day. -
Satisfaction comes in many forms. Harvesting a doe in NY was never much of a thrill. I had great private land with years worth of scouting "handed" to me. Moving 16 hours south and scouting a few weekends of public land and doing it all from scratch...by myself and then finally after many weekends getting a doe was a huge rush. Accomplishment isn't just in the score of the rack. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
