  1. we have a thread about gun control already. I've already asked for examples of laws that have impacted hunters negatively and the only one to the table was Mike R. and the mute swan and Doc with some "proposals" in California. Otherwise I do not understand this "foresight" when it comes to having our hunting rights taken away. Like I've said before, NY has done nothing but increase seasons, include more weapons and decrease setback rules, add youth seasons, decrease license price etc. Where is this apocalypse coming from?
  2. I know many "gun owners" who have a rifle and shotgun or 2. They could care less about pistols and assault rifles. These people I know are not anti-gun, but what bugs me about some of the lets call them "gun nuts" is the level they take it to and the will they impose upon those who don't believe it's appropriate to need a 30 round magazine in what is essentially a military rifle. Personally I recognize and support the right to own these guns, but as an organization you have to be very careful you don't go over the deep end and sway those in the middle. Remember the idiots in Arizona walking through the store with ARs on their backs? It builds a stereotype that for some turns into a perception of reality. I think with hunting most americans do not mind us shooting deer and duck and turkey etc. But yes a tournament of killing crows or a bloody deer carcass strapped across the roof a civic can turn people off. Again, I'm not advocating taking away any rights, but some of the extremist on this board need to recognize that sometimes their crusades can go to far and turn people off.
  3. says the guy who has called me and a few other members some pretty choice words. internet bullying... good lord never thought I'd see that statement on this site.
  4. i had another response planned till i got to this last paragraph. I agree that there's nothing wrong with people who blow off steam at a wedding and drink to much. But just like some NFL players have found out recently, when you announce who you work for and what you do you are now representing that organization regardless if you're on the clock or not. I think the "salaries" and fat in organization like the NRA is what is concerning to members. The same criticism has been made to the red cross and a lot of churches where the pastor lives in a mansion.
  5. you don't think they track your offenses now? when you go in front of the judge he has no way to determine if you have prior offenses? Heck, throw $3 onto every license to support the software if it's that complicated. I'd pay that no problem. Probably would recoup their costs with increase fine revenue anyhow.
  6. how is it any different than the laws telling you when and what you can shoot and what you shoot it with and how many you can shoot etc etc? Less we forget back tags? How many states still have those? I just don't get the aversion to change. Most of you know how I felt about crossbows, and yeah part of my argument was tradition... but a vest and a hat while walking through the woods? You can freaking take it off when you're in the stand. I'd wear thong underwear if I could shoot that 10 point 20 minutes before sunrise.
  7. don't remember. I actually was going back and forth between fox and msnbc intentionally to see the different spin. It was kind of enlightening. I'm sure it probably was Fox.
  8. Not a big NRA fan. I think when an organization has been around for so long and gets as big as they are they can become corrupted and lost. Same thing happens to large corporations. You get so big and so layered the red tape makes it impossible to do anything right. However, I pay my dues every year because I believe they're the best chance we have. I swear if I get one more call during dinner asking for more money I'm canceling.
  9. do that many of you not wear BO anyhow? I wear it even on private land because you just don't know. In some states you're allowed to remove while in the tree or blind. You're telling me for an extra hour a day you wouldn't put a vest and hat on?
  10. I would prefer a points system. I don't think someone should lose their privileges for life for a minor violation. I do think they should for major and also repeat offenders. I do not believe they should lose their guns. We have the point system for driving cars, no reason we can't do something similar.
  11. that's the point. of course they don't want people to see their names. The name in the newspaper probably does more damage than the fine. Maybe some will think about it before they do something stupid. Reputation is something you can hardly put a price on. I think you're giving poachers too much credit. "already know they did wrong". These kind of hunters just don't care like you and I.
  12. that's not the point here. There is a right and a wrong way to protest injustice. Stockpiling ammo in a bunker and planing bombings like that of the first world trade and Oklahoma city are not the right way to do it. And yes, it will land you on the feds radar and I'm glad it does. At the end of the day if I get blown up by an Arab or by a Neo Nazi, I'm still dead and the government let me down. And then we can talk about assassinations. How many of our leaders and presidents were gunned down by foreign governments and not our own wackos?
  13. my apologies. wasn't meant that way. But I've made the point before and I'll continue to make it. We get our dander up over certain laws and we don't on others. I don't expect anyone to make any claims otherwise but I can guarantee we're not all obeying the safe act.
  14. or you can hunt one of the bordering states that "gets it".
  15. yes. the law is stupid. I think Eddie and Doc misread that. YOU'RE not stupid. The law is.
  16. Those are perceived threats and knowing how many whack jobs are out there it doesn't surprise me. Remember terrorism is a pretty encompassing term. Burning down a store could be terrorism and it happens a lot. I heard the ferguson protestors referred to as terrorists.
  17. Perfectly said. Glad you're out there spreading the same message that I would.
  18. scenes like this is why I love deer hunting. I've seen some wild stuff even in my short hunting career.
  19. said it before and i'll say it again and I don't care if I get flamed for it. Putting any animal out of its suffering is the right thing to do regardless of the law.
  20. I'm not assuming. But what would you do if your fridge crapped out tonight? That's at least $700 for a base model.
  21. you made it sound like a $200 unplanned bill would cause your power to get shut off. In the end new tires, cavity, broken fridge, really good deal on something you need/want... $300 is probably a bill we can all "deal with".
  22. In NY I hunted 3 areas. 1 was was a 4 minutes walk out my back door. The other was the house I grew up in and a 7 minute drive and then a 5-20 min hike. The other was a 90 minute drive to where we stayed with a 20 minute drive to the spot and 15 minute hike. Having a place close by helped with weekday hunts for sure. Now I have to drive 25 minutes to public land with another 30 min or so hike. Certainly stops me from hunting on days I'd like to. I hunt at least twice on the weekends and probably 5 or so days during the weekday during the rut. It's a long season and I'd say I put in my time.
  23. How dare they let me know a sex offender is living next door. That poor man!
