private land in other states..wish ny would do this
Five Seasons replied to G-Man's topic in General Hunting
Never ceases to amaze me what people do for money. I'm excusing the hunting part of this. Because in the end, it's all about money. -
I'm not saying I agree with what he did. That's kind of why I brought it up. You make all valid points that I brought up to him as well. In 20 years this is the first time he asked for a while deer. We always bring chops and some slim jims and he's paid for the lease. When you don't own the land, you're always in jeopardy. On the other hand I see his side of it. I think this applies to all deer not jut doe. Unless it's a trophy one might have a hard time with a 2.5 as well, considering we routinely take mature deer. I should add I took a doe this year and the other neighbor took several. We will still continue to bring him some meat.

Doubt it. And either do their wives either... Shudder

I bought the mini this fall for the woods. I get really bad reception and it drains my phone without even using it. Highly recommend them.

The thick stuff is excellent advice. I killed my 9 point on public land between 2 thick bedding areas that were loaded with scrapes. I didn't have a big long sweeping view of the woods like I would have in the hardwoods, but I didn't need it either.

I think it's easier in an open prarie than it is out of a treestand. I say "think" because I have no clue. But I imagine those guys practice at that range. Not a whole lot of hardwoods giving good bow shots at that range.

there wasn't really an implied commitment. Maybe I should have left that out and left it up to more of a general question. Last year I shot a doe during MZ because I needed the meat. I had seen the doe all season long. It was like we knew each other. idk...

started to do my own deer this year. I have a good buck knife http://www.basspro.com/Buck-110-Folding-Hunter-Knife/product/34921/ that's never served me wrong but needed a more versatile set for processing. For $50 I thought this was a heck of a deal http://www.cabelas.com/product/Outdoor-Edgereg-Game-Processor/747253.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dbutcher%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%25253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=butcher&WTz_l=Header%253BSearch-All+Products Has everything you need and more and the case is great to keep it all together. The knives do need pretty regular sharpening. I might upgrade the fillet knife at some point.

I just bought this grinder. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012KJBR0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I've done 2 deer so far in the last few weeks. I do not have experience with any other grinder except an old beast from the 60's my grandpa had. But it's easy to clean. Has no problems or lag grinding so long as you chunk the meat up a little and isn't very loud. Machine says 2" cubes and I was probably closer to 4". I believe there's a decent warranty. I have not tried sausage yet, but the grind went well. I did a double grind using the larger wagon wheel first than second pass with smallest hole. Including vac seal and cleanup I'd say <2 hours to do a deer.

I was talking to my dad last weekend. He took a nice buck this year and that's all the meat him and my mom need. At this point in his life he's purely a trophy hunter. He leases a non-hunter neighbors property who wants to reduce the heard because they eat his wife's flowers but is not obsessed with it, or is it part of the lease. He asked for a doe if my dad could swing it. He passed on probably dozens of doe during bow and didn't hunt much during rifle. He made this comment which I thought might generate some interesting discussion. Me: "Did you take a doe during MZ?" Him "I had a few shots but just couldn't do it" Me "What do you mean? I thought you were going to take one?" Him "they made it this far. Survived the whole season. Just feel like they should be rewarded and walk" Thoughts?

something funny about the word pumpkin in reference to hunting and shooting.

what is a baited research site? -
welcome. love the shirt. I'd like to get one for the wife; do you have a link to wear I can get one?
-
aw come on. i can take a good jab.
-
agree with all this. A good gps with topo and birdseye will really help you get deeper and into better spots.

all about stands. But I do use a blind sometimes when I'm going for a quick hunt and dont want to mess with the climber or dont have a good tree. a blind is also nice in the rain and if you're going to be fidgeting. but again, nothing beats a tree for me.

I'd pass all those except the rap. Love me some gangster rap. and manscaping. get out of the stoneage and your wife might go down on you some more

i'm not against what you do, but i respectfully disagree that is where hunting is headed. You will never see me pay for a fenced deer. I will pay though the teeth for gear and leases etc. but for me, giant racks are not why I hunt. I surely do hunt for big bucks don't get me wrong, but sometimes I think we get so involved in our little circles and we start to believe everyone is just like us. When it comes to guns, when it comes to why we hunt etc. The recent thread on "why do you hunt" is a good example.

i'd take my chances outside a fence and being hunted than inside a fence and being hunted.

we've done king crab every new years since I was little.
