Observationally, I don't believe we have a high fawn mortality. There is food EVERYWHERE. but this is just my opinion from personal observation and talking with other hunters. My own belief is that if a fawn is going to starve, at least they had a shot. That's just mother nature. and again from personal observation I've never come across a 1.5 or older dead deer in the woods who appeared to die from starvation and I scout all year round. If i find dead deer, 90% of the time there's a leg blown off or arrow/gun wound. -

my guess? the fawns going to die anyhow right? win win. The doe is just going to make 2 or 3 more deer next year. So if this is really about population control, then shoot the doe. if it's about growing the herd? Then I can buy your argument. Hard to say which fawn has the genetics to survive and which doesn't though too. In Wayne county there's still enough crops and cover that I believe i fawn loss rate is pretty low. -
100% truth.

Christ, relax man. We're having a discussion on the web. bs'ing. Did it really only take 2 days for the offseason to kick into gear? I asked a question. Thanks for not answering it. I know plenty that feel THROUGH EDUCATION. We can grow bigger and better deer in NY. So NOT CARING what your neighbors do will affect you. Maybe you could sit down with them. have a beer. Offer to come to an agreement on what you'll shoot and what we shouldn't shoot. Maybe THROUGH EDUCATION you can convince him shooting the button buck will hurt his chances. at no point are you making him do anything. Maybe he wont even listen. But is it so hard to even consider sitting down and talking? I know there are many on this forum that have this relationship with their neighbors so chill the hell out. -

but as others have said (so I'm not alone) like it or not, what a hunter posts on the web does reflect on all of us. Please explain the point to me then. I guess i'm just a dumb dumb. A fawn does not breed and eats less food. a 1.5 year old can breed, eats more and has at least been through a season. They have "some" experience. Do we all forget why we hunt? Or are some of you the type to pay $5k and shoot a huge pen raised deer tied to a rope? And to all the high and mighty... where are all the pics of the fawns you've been shooting? Phade I didn't see any from you. Steve you either. I know you saw them. Why didn't you let the arrow or bullet fly? -honest question -

you made it sound like i have shot multiple fawns. I pointed out that I shot one. When I was young. And learned from it. There is a HUGE difference between knowingly pulling the trigger and being inexperienced. I'll leave it at this. Where I hunt, there's no excuse to shoot a fawn. However others choose to hunt then so be it. I do wonder how some of you would feel if this was the neighbor who hunts next to your property where you're investing money and time in food plots and trail grooming etc. -

1. you made a bold statement and gave no information to support it. 2. When you walked up on it is no different than when you were gutting it. No hunter here is arguing what we go through in the process of harvesting and recovering the animal. We're talking about what you decide needs to be posted for all the world to see. I have plenty of "dead deer laying on the ground" and entrance and exit wound pics. I keep them formyself and try not to post those I think aren't tateful or have no meaning. -

i never stated that. I have shot one bb when i was 18 as a mistake and it was a learning experience. And if LI has such a deer problem, shoot the breeder doe. They eat more and multiply. If its so bad as they claim there must be a few other doe hanging with that fawn... -

There are so many deer to shoot that there's no reason to shoot a fawn. They're dumb, they're innocent. Let them live a little. Give them a chance at least. Is it worth it to butcher for such a small amount of meat? -

Interesting. I think hunting is many different things to many people so the "fill tags" comment bothers me. Ignorant. What's the site? -

I agree but I posted mine because I look sexy in snow camo and it was the first deer behind my house.... But mostly the snow camo -

Taking a careless photo for a few friends and family can be forgiven, I think when someone goes to the trouble of uploading and posting it that they've gone too far. -

Disagree. I know both hunters who have quit the sport for one reason or another and actually gone as far as being against it. I know antis who married hunters and became neutral. But yes, in general it the neutral person we worry about. My wife doesn't hunt. She supports me. She might someday, but when she helped me drag my mz doe out she commented to the position of he does neck. "Awwww look at her neck all propped up like that with her tongue hanging out". We as hunters become desensitized I think and "forget" -

what i meant is in terms of what Doe said regarding how the image comes across to someone who is indifferent to the sport. Sure, there is the fact that people don't want to hit a deer with their car and don't want deer to eat their shrubs, but also don't want to see the deer killed (we all know them, happy when it's out of sight and mind). I get that, but shooting a fawn and then placing it next to another deer to give the size reference is tough. A dead fawn by itself is something I probably don't even take a picture of at all. -

I'm not apposed to this if shared within hunters. It's when these kind of pics get out that it hurts us. It's not my personal style. I'm not even a big fan of dead deer shots. I like the hunter with at least an attempt to cover the blood and guts. We've even gone as far as brushing the deer down quick and washing any blood off the horns, sticking the tongue back in. I think the worst part of this pic is the size of the deer... -
for sure, but there was no doubt he was a very young deer. Moral of the story, neither rack nor body can be used to age a deer, but honestly for the most part I agree with Sam. You can get within a year in NYS 90% of the time.

Permit application question....
Five Seasons replied to firehunter48's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
lets put it this way. Erie gives you reasons to justify the need to cc. it can't hurt so why not try? you will always get your target and game. that's easy. it's the cc that's hard in erie. -
interesting i didn't know that. Assuming this only applies to state land? We have mostly private around me.
