  1. we have a similar situation and enjoy all the benefits you mentioned. My only issue is that my car is a rwd v8 with a low ground clearance. I do have winter tires for her that i used for half a winter but right now it sits in the barn with lowprofile summer tires. So if my silverado dies in the winter. I'm screwed. If the car dies in the summer, at least i have the truck.
  2. that sounds like a great story for the Rifleman's - Armed Citizen section.
  3. Body size is interesting too though. The nice 8 in my avatar was late October and while the rack was large he only weighed in the 130's. Last year I shot a 1.5 year old 5 that tipped the scales at 152. Only a week earlier in bow and the same stand. Same crops etc. I like to think that i got the best of both worlds with the 8 because I got the mount and the good meat. Haha
  4. I don't ride although would like to own one someday. I do know plenty that do ride, but don't hunt and wait till the seasons over to run the trails. I always appreciated that. End of the day? There's plenty if time to kill deer in NY. We already have one of the longest seasons. But one thing is sure, you'll never please everyone.
  5. Sportsman/trophy. The hunters on here and those I know in life that brag about numbers? Meaningless to me. I love the hunt, the woods and the experience. Tags filled or not. I pass many deer looking for my trophy (quality over quantity) but I will still fill my freezer. I still consider any bow kill a trophy. However I focus on bucks. A gun kill has never been too impressive to me.
  6. Eh. Not sure it would matter. The gun season is long enough, and then to split it up? I'll be honest, it's been a good and long season and I'm sort of glad it's over. I'll get buck fever soon enough I'm sure though,
  7. 8.5 is probably on his downturn.
  8. I agree that aging some of the bigger doe would be interesting.
  9. I don't think I have access to the smilies on tapatalk. It was totally meant as a joke. You should know that by now
  10. I've seen a lot of tracks too, but seems to be a lot of nocturnal movement this time of year.
  11. I think 1.5 and even 2.5's aren't to difficult to age if you know the area well. Sure there are always some freaks (both good and bad) but we've hunted our areas so long that it's not to hard to tell. It's the 3.5+ that gets hard I think
  12. Zero impact. Good luck. Erie doesn't like to give unrestricted. You'll probably get target and hunting
  13. A doe or a large dog? Haha jk that'll taste great
  14. Finished my season this morning not seeing anything. Not a bad season overall. I'm thankful for good gear because I didn't get too cold this morning.
  15. Saw lots of tracks this morning but only a few doe. I think they're moving and feeding a lot at night now. Hunkering down during the day to save calories.
  16. When it's very cold like this morning; do deer tend to move more to keep their body temps up! Or hunker down to conserve?I'm in 8F.
  17. Don't be scared. Confidence is the best thing you can have in bow hunting. Build it up by consistently hitting your mark during practice
  18. Man idk I love early bow season but there's just something about mz in the snow
  19. there is certainly a lot of various opinions on herd management. how many does? what about immature bucks? what do you consider immature? etc... unless you and your surrounding land owners are all on the same page... it's one of those things that you have little control over and all it'll do is piss you off thinking about it. that's just my .02. Personally I would like handful of doe taken off our land, and only 2.5 or older bucks. But it just doesn't happen it seems. I even considered shooting a small doe instead of the mature one I shot yesterday because I know she could easily drop 3 in the spring. idk...
  20. agreed. we're getting to hung up on the word dumb. Fact of the matter is younger deer are less experienced and prone to make mistakes. I had a bb look right at me last night. I actually reached for the gun hanging in the tree while he was watching and he didn't so much as startle. I would never have gotten away with that with a mature buck or doe. They might not be "dumb", but just like with humans we use the term "dumb kids" because they just haven't had the experience yet that an older animal has had to learn from.
