  1. that was kind of his brother's whole point by the way. That they're making money off of something that isn't meant to be for profit since they banned market hunting in the early 1900's. The argument then goes back to cave paintings of hunting, to field and stream magazines in the 60's to primos hunting videos in the 80's/90's to what is now social media. Beginning with magazines and books, we have been using grip and grins to sell product. What better way to sell a product than showing your big ass buck you killed with it.
  2. lmao. so the school cites a paper about the song. the news contacts the paper's author who is shocked and states that her paper doesn't mention anything negative about the songs lyrics, only that it's old and where it originated and that no other school has cited her work to remove it. news contacts school with the author's resonse “Some suggest that the use of collars on slaves with bells to send an alert that they were running away is connected to the origin of the song Jingle Bells. While we are not taking a stance to whether that is true or not, we do feel strongly that this line of thinking is not in agreement with our district beliefs to value all cultures and experiences of our students. Some suggest? The paper you cited as your reason to remove it says the opposite. Nobody ever has described bells as being racists. And if they have there isn't some 7 year old african american kid in that school who is having flashbacks when they hear a bell. A quick Google search shows that bells on horses were common as far back as Roman times. The linkage of “sleigh bells” with slave bells is not addressed in Hamill’s paper. When I asked Hamill about this, she responded: “The use of bells on enslaved peoples may be true, but there is no connection to the song that I have discovered in my research. Perhaps finding a well-referenced source for this claim might be in order if that is what (school officials) want to determine as the cause for not singing it.”
  3. yeah there are for sure some filler episodes. They just brought in the guy that was the inspiration for the character on jurassic park. But to be honest i found it interesting. 52 weeks and several hours each episode and it gets tough for them i'm sure. The thought crossed my mind. I know you're not a meateater guy, and that's fine. I would recommend you listen to this back and forth though. You can tell when there's a quiver in someone's voice that it's more than an act and I don't think this was an act for attention... and if it was a couple of country boys from the upper peninsula in Michigan deserve an award. Lets just say this, whether genuine or manufactured the topic of overcrowding is very real and social media isn't helping. I have personally lost and and leased land in the last few years alone. They're not making more of it, it's more and more expensive and public land is receiving more and more pressure. The topic of showing every deer you wound just like you show every deer you kill is another good one. Show too much and it's fuel for the anti's. Show not enough and you risk being dishonest with new hunters.
  4. meateater brought Matt onto the podcast. If I'm honest it wasn't a very good segment. Some good points made, but not a very professional back and forth with too much interrupting and obvious family tension that sort of ruined what is an excellent topic and debate. https://www.themeateater.com/listen/meateater/ep-304-the-fish-shacks-revenge-a-tiki-christmas-family-feud-extravaganza
  5. i forget how the seasons line up or lined up at that time like 10+ years ago but I liked having a 15 minute drive to go take my dog for a hike and maybe get lucky with a ring neck. But yeah it continues on into deer and I was hunting the field edges because all the deer hunters were on the other side of the park. I figured, I'd go where hunters weren't and yeah the deer were there... but so were the bird hunters lol. I learned why the deer hunters weren't.
  6. triple 7 pellets and 209's and never had an issue that wasn't my fault. I tracked a wounded doe one morning coming out of the woods that the neighbor kid slit its belly open the day before and just "stopped tracking" for some reason. Anyhow I see this blood trail and tracks in the snow and just start following it. I come across a few bed downs and keep tracking through some nasty stuff. Belly crawling and tearing up my gear. I didn't have scope covers on my CVA at this time, which I do now. Anyhow a slow hour in I see a deer stand up at about 50 yards in the brush. I raise the ML and steady against a tree. My scope has snow in it and it's blurry/foggy but clear enough and I somewhat rush the shot but drop her none the less. I reload anyhow in a hurry as I see her still alive on the ground (later realize I spined her). I still have a lane and pull the trigger. click. pop out the primer, and put a new one in. click. dimples in both primers... wtf? I'm down to my last primer. I take the ramrod out again and push back down the barrel. The bullet and powder move another inch. Steady gun. boom. This is many years ago and I learned 2 lessons. 1. Cheap scope covers are not just good for your glass, but really good when conditions are bad or if you're moving around in the snow, even if you didn't plan on it. 2. MARK YOUR F'N ROD! The powder and primer were fine, in my haste I just hadn't pushed the load all the way in (haha). another side note, even though i have a ton left over I buy new powder every 3 to 5 years too even though i store it in a temp/humid controlled safe.
  7. yeah i bowhunted it too. One morning I had the pheasant hunters pushing them too me haha
  8. there are some members here who swear by and are successful hunting "buck beds". Personally, I love to hunt the chase and rut so I don't pay too much attention to this concept. However, any hunter worth his salt will find rubs, scrapes and trails and setup shop. You scouted, found sign and now need to setup a stand somewhere where you can hunt a good intersection of those runs where your wind is right and you're not skylined.
  9. I hunted darien one year. Passed a small 6 that I realize probably got pounded not too long after. It's a beautiful tract of land but I'm not sure how any deer would ever get big there.
  10. yeah when I lived in MS the season went well into January and still started on 10/1, although nobody hunted much early season because it was still f'n hot as balls. Their rut was also around christmas so it made sense. I know these seasons aren't unheard of across the country, just feels off... which I'm sure it will become normal in a few years. PS I didn't see shit and heard no shots haha.
  11. It’s weird hunting right now lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. all valiant attempts to educate a man who knows it all and can not be persuaded to think differently.
  13. technically of the 4 rules (or 5 depending on your source), Rule number 1 is to treat every gun like it's loaded.
  14. was prepped to go this morning. Bed on time and knew when the head hit the pillow it was 50/50. I just don't have the motivation with a full freezer. Going to sit this afternoon just because I have nothing else really going on .
  15. Under control? It was a 10 point lead at half. Just when I thought you couldn’t take it further, you’ve added a fresh bullet point. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Anyone hunt or drive by public land? Curious the numbers. I wouldn’t think tomorrow might be busier than today with many off and not having been exhausted and hungover. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. The law makes no sense that someone with a gun needs orange so someone else with a gun doesn’t shoot them, yet if that one persons doesn’t have a gun then they don’t need orange because somehow they are now immune to being shot? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Lol you’re a trip man. Good luck in life, I’m out of this one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I mean, I’m a dick so I can’t really argue back. I’m sorry to hear about your granddaughter and I hope the family beats it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Traitor! We should do some predator hunting before you leave! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. It significantly, and I mean significantly reduces the likelihood you end up in the ER and short of a severely compromised or elderly 1% it will keep you alive. I support everyone’s right to not get the vaccine but some of you are so wrapped up in misinformation that I just don’t even know where to begin. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. I switched to a rechargeable hand warmer for like $30 on Amazon and it’s amazing. No noise, quick warmth and not worried about running out of warmers. Highly recommend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. That comment lost me, but I did attend a few of their leadership classes lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. At no point was I mocking anyone. Simply agreeing with you that some will prioritize other things over hunting and that is ok. I’ve been thrown more curveballs than you can imagine, but the woods is my therapy, my meditation and it’s where I go to help process those curveballs. Please understand I’m not judging you for having 9 weeks of vacation and not able to find time to hunt, but simply trying to point out that we all have different levels of devotion to this sport and anything in life that is worth doing will require sacrifice. What you choose is on you and what someone else thinks or does shouldn’t matter in the least. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. You know you’re pointing out what many of us have said for a while. It’s not that we need more time to thin the herd, it’s access to areas like town parks that don’t allow hunting. The deer aren’t stupid, they know where it’s safe when the guns go off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
