For Release: IMMEDIATE Contact: Lori Severino Wednesday, August 31, 2011 (51 402-8000 DEC ANNOUNCES NEW BIG GAME HUNTING LAWS The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced two recent changes to laws affecting big game hunting this year in Cortland County and in parts of Delaware, Sullivan and Ulster counties. These bills were signed into law in mid-August, therefore, they are not included in the hardcopy version of the 2011-2012 New York Hunting & Trapping Regulations Guide, but are reflected on the DEC website (www.dec.ny.gov) and in the electronic version of the hunting guide (www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/37136.html.) Specifically, hunters should be aware that: In Cortland County – A new law allows the use of rifles for big game hunting in Cortland County, but does not allow the use of crossbows in this county during the regular big game season. However, crossbows may be used in Cortland County during the late muzzleloader season. See http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/35010.html for a map of where rifles, shotguns, vertical bows and crossbows can be used for big game hunting and http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html for details about hunting with crossbows and the required Certificate of Qualification. Separate legislation authorizing the use of rifles for big game hunting in Wyoming County and in the portion of Chautauqua County south of Route 20 also allows the use of crossbows during the regular big game season and late muzzleloader season in those counties. In Delaware, Sullivan and Ulster counties – A new law establishes mandatory antler restrictions in the portion of Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 3A that lies south and west of State Route 28 (this includes parts of Delaware, Sullivan and Ulster counties). The law prohibits hunters from taking any antlered deer except those that have at least one antler with at least three points. The law applies to all public and private lands and all deer hunting seasons. Only hunters under the age of 17 are exempt and may take any antlered deer with at least one antler measuring three or more inches in length. Deer hunting regulations in all other WMUs were not affected by this legislation. See http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28605.html for a map of deer hunting seasons including the area with mandatory antler restrictions and http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27663.html for information of antler restrictions in New York. These laws are in effect for the 2011 hunting seasons. ### 11-123

There is a season on wood chucks they are considered a "ground squirrel" Members of the Sciuridae family, commonly referred to as squirrels, are rodents. The rodent's characteristically large, paired, and continuously growing incisors are perfectly adapted for crunching on nuts and wood and must be kept short by continuous gnawing. Rodents make up just over 40% of the total mammalian species on earth. Squirrels make up a significant portion of that and certainly are the most diverse family of mammals. They are easily identified by their long bushy tails, pointed ears and cheek pouches (used for temporary food storage). Squirrels can be categorized into 3 groups: Flying Squirrels are arboreal and have furred membranes that aid in gliding. Tree Squirrels are adapted for climbing trees, with sharp claws and long bushy tails. Ground Squirrels are generally more robust and tent to have less bushy tails. All squirrels have 4 clawed toes on the forelimbs and 5 clawed toes on the hind limbs. Some interesting facts: Squirrels will bite off the germinating end of a nut prior to burying it to prevent it from growing. They usually maintain several dens in case one is found by a predator. They don't use their memory, but sight and smell to locate buried nuts in the winter. The nuts they find aren't necessarily the nuts they buried and they don't recover most of what they do burry. They use scent markings, vocal calls and tail flicks to communicate with each other. A tail raised above the body and flicked is usually a sign of aggression. Although not generally social, they will call out loudly to warn others of predators. A Woodchuck (or Groundhog) is indeed a ground squirrel. "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood? A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood." Actually, woodchucks feed on bark and twigs only if food is scarce. In our region, mowed lawns are an all-you-can-eat buffet for the woodchuck.

MORE ON THE SQUIRRELS....
