  1. I respect every LEGAL hunter, Don't be too fast to Judge, Maybe he works 3 jobs to support his family and only gets to hunt 1 day a week, He is still a Hunter.
  2. Today this should be a non issue since NYS gives out 6 trillion Doe Tags, however back in the day when we lived on Venison to survive and you could only shoot Bucks there was always 3 or 4 bucks hanging on the pole with my Sisters/Moms tag attached to the horns. We had a family of 13 to feed and eldery neighbors who depended on the meat or starve.
  3. I learned this lesson the hard way, boresighted my new gun, went hunting, had a nice big buck 30 yards away, shot 3 times and he just stood there and walked around my stand for 4 minutes while I sat there with a $400 stick. Needless to say once he was long gone I picked out a stump around 100 yds away and took a shot to find out I was shooting about 2 feet low,,,grrrrrr
  4. I had a pretty good year as per deer in the freezer, however my Sitting in the stand to actual deer seen is like 60 hrs and over 12 days hunting to only seeing 5 deer. The problem I have is not enough hunters to move the deer around. Fathers do not take kids out and the hunting tradition is rapidly dieing off. If I see a deer in the woods it 100% luck because there are miles of hardwoods and they travel wherever they want, I have just been lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time for the past 40 yrs.
  5. Yes I am using SST's also, they were the first I checked out and seemed pretty deadly in my gun so I stuck with them.
  6. I have never seen a deer with a collar on in the woods yet, If you bow hunt on Cornell land closer to town you might see them. I hunt on Cornell land out behind the Airport, according to all the reports we are suppose to be overrun with deer, well I guess they are in the city limits where we can't hunt! Once you get out of the city limits you might see a deer or two all season.
  7. Got the 12 gauge H&R Ultra Deer Slayer with the Bone-collector 3x9 scope this yr for my Birthday from my Wife and Kids and this gun is deadly! So far I have shot at 2 deer, used 2 sabot shells and have dropped both deer in there tracks. Never really had a gun like this, nor used a scope before, I am in love! This gun takes deer hunting to a new level, and it is very accurate at 150 yards. The county I hunt in is shotgun only and now that I have this gun it can stay shotgun for all I care!
  8. If a deer is running through the woods and I shoot it and drop it, its MY deer, there will be no coins to toss or hard luck stories.
  9. I will be out Thursday Morning till about 11 then back at the house getting ready for "the Feast" then I am done at noon at Friday so back in the stand for an afternoon hunt, then I have all weekend to kill Bambi's Mom or Dad!
  10. I used to live in Caribou Maine for 10 years and up there you see Bear and Moose on a daily basis, In NY about 4 yrs ago I saw some Bear while vacationing with the family up north at Lake George, and I saw one in a field not far from where I live now in Trumansburg NY.
  11. Never seen a wolf but have seen a few Cougars in my time, but that's a subject for a "different" forum,,,,,lol PS,,,,looks like a Coyote,,, not Wiley though,,,,
  12. If my wife wanted to go bear hunting I would give her a BB gun and open a jar of Honey in her backpack and send her out,,,,,,
  13. Well after sitting in the same stand from 615am to noon everyday since opening day, freezing my nards off I finally lucked out and took a nice doe while walking out to the truck, let her hang for a couple hours and took her to the butcher. On the way back from the butcher I told my son we should go back out to the stand for the last 1 1/2 left of legal hunting to see if anything walks through. At 430 a big bodied spike presented a beautiful broadside shot at 75 yards and my son dropped him in his tracks. 2 deer in one day, 2014 is looking better, now waiting to hunt on Thursday!
  14. Just wondering if there was anyone on here hunting Cornell Land this year?
  15. In 7h went from nothing, to Holy crap! I got fresh rubs and scrapes 50 yds from the stand,,,,,come on Saturday!
  16. 7H - I have been going out for the past 3 weekends, 1st weekend, nothing, 2nd weekend one lone rub about 150 yd from the stand, went out yesterday and found 4 new rubs about 50 yds from the stand and a nice fresh scrape. Its amazing what a few weeks can do to deer behavior! I am counting down to Saturday Morning!
  17. I wear so much orange that I probably look like a walking pumpkin, so unless its pumpkin season I should be safe!
  18. Its about time the Deer gods bless us with some Opening day snow or even cold temps, It seams like in the past few yrs here in the Finger lakes we have had either Rain, wind, or warm.
  19. Looking at these so called "rubs" reminds me of a time long ago, I was hunting at 3 rivers up in Phoenix and I came across a city boy who was deer hunting and we had a couple inches of show on the ground and he called me over to show me some "huge" buck tracks he was following and asked if I could help him track it,,,,,I didn't have the heart to tell them they were rabbit tracks in the snow,,,,,, Not one of these trees is a deer "rub"
  20. We have fields here in Tompkins county that have 20-30 deer in them all day and 99% of them are does,,,,,I figure the bucks are close by, however they are not dumb enough to show themselves during the day like the does do,,,,
  21. I have had my hunting buddies drop huge bucks sitting on a log smoking a cigarette, Back in 2005 I shot a nice 8 pt while eating a double chocolate muffin and drinking hot coco, it walked out of the thicket straight to my stand. The only scent control I use is rubbing some fresh pine on my hunting clothes the morning I go out. Been hunting for close to 40 yrs, never been skunked yet.
  22. I always take the first week of gun, and depending on the weather, I might take a "sick" day here and there,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
  23. I always carry my Dad's lucky knife, its well over 100 yrs old and has been sharpened so much the blade is just about gone, that knife has gutted more deer in its life than I can possibly fathum.
  24. I have a old 30-30's that my dad killed many deer with, and I would love to hunt with it now, however I live in Tompkins County and we are still Shotgun only, even though every other county around us has went to Rifle, makes me so mad I could kick a kitten! grrrrrrrr
  25. Back in 2008 I put up a permanent stand in a tree the night before opener, made all sorts of noise,,,,,,Shot a nice 8pt at 845am the next morning!
