  1. I seen one while camping this weekend while camping near a bunch of Phish fans.
  2. I am going to look into adding a peep, you are the second person to recomend one. Thanks!
  3. Did you add the peep yourself? I have a Lyman and I have problems with the back sight. It folds down and also due to poor eyesight it blurs up on me.
  4. Any one know of any in the Saratoga area coming up?
  5. 09 Chevy Suburban, I can fit lots of deer in the back of it!
  6. After buying a new bow this year I have to agree with Steve, compounds are better than crossbows. Very forgiving, quiet, accurate to way out, light, I have never shot a cross bow so I don't know about them but I feel very confident with my compound.
  7. It usually takes us about 1 hr to do the skining and cutting and another hour to package, and we do speed up with every one as the year goes on. We save lots of money by doing it all our selves.
  8. I think once you start pushing the 130-140 mark I would call it big, as far as average, it would depend on where you hunt. Some places an average buck would be considered a scrub in another area. I have allways been interested in this subject, some guys go crazy over any buck while others wouldn't care about anything under a 120. I ain't to picky yet but I am starting down that road at this point in my hunting career. I might actually pass on one some day! haha
  9. We put our stands up just before archery and take them down just before the end of archery to hopefully avoid others from taking them.
  10. For archery stuff I go through Lancaster archery most of the time. Gander Mountain is nice because of the free shipping
  11. Yes the DEC site is a bit of a pain but only because there is so much info crammed in there. I live in the Northern zone near Schylerville in the town of Northumberland, its all farm country out here. There is a decent area near me called the Wilton Preserve, its a mixture of town, county and state lands. Google the Wilton Preserve and you will find maps of where you can hunt in the northern zone. I grew up in BallstonSpa and currently work the other way down Western ave about 15 minutes from UA. There is some good hunting in the Albany Pine bush but again it can be crowded at times. Its one of those areas that you look up in any direction and see a tree stand in some spots. There are a good amount of deer too. I hunt behind my work once in a while and allways see deer, and a good amount of bucks.
  12. I have a Rem 870 with a screw in rifled choke, I use the cheap Remington Sluggers. Open sights, I am good to about 100 or a little more.
  13. I got a few but here is just one... A few years ago we were heading home after getting one when we get stopped and checked. It was right around when they switched to the newer tags, my old man gets called over and the CO says, "This tag is filled out all wrong you have the date marked twice and no month down. What are you doing? Have you ever killed a deer before?" With out hesitation my dad looks him in the eye with a serious look and says "Do you mean today or this week?" The CO chuckled and let us go with just a warning. We still laugh about that one, thankfully the CO had a sense of humor and could tell it was an honest mistake.
  14. I listen to a wide variety, some of my favs are Tool, Pearl Jam, a little DMB once in a while. I am a child of the 90's, grunge rock. Old jazz like Coltrane....it depends on the mood. and now I am also starting to get into country.. I hate to admit that one, haha some of it makes me laugh though.
  15. It seems as though bad shot choice has become an increasingly common occurance. 1/4 in is not a good idea! There are a few good shows that I enjoy however, I catch my self watching the bad ones too. Its kinda like a train wreck that you just can't stop watching. And Doc you are right, why do they celebrate a crappy shot? I usually swear before the arrow gets there if I know its bad and get a terrible sick felling after but not some of these guys. I remeber one show, a woman country star gut shot a big one, they searched half assed, gave up and low and behold the guide found it weeks later after it had baddly decomposed and been snacked on by critters. They then cut to the star smiling and happy that they had found her buck. Like it was a perfect shot and something to be proud of. :
  16. I would also recomend a string suppressor or damper or decelerator.. what ever you want to call it they work great to quiet that super powerfull string down. I shot several bows that had them this past spring and I was impressed with them, there was a deffinite difference between bows that did and did not have them. When you put all of those silencers and decellerators together it makes for a shock free quiet bow, perfect for hunting.
  17. There is alot of State land available, it would be easier if you went to the DEC web site and had a look around. It can get crowded on opening day though so be carefull. Ilive 1 hr north of Albany just outside of Saratoga. look here http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8297.html
  18. Venison is a very versatile meat, any recipie that you like with beef will do fine for venison. At this point our supply is running thin because we eat it so frequently but a loin on the grill with a little bbq sauce is great in the summer time. Matter of fact we had that about two weeks ago, the last of the loin that I had saved just for the grill. I also like to cook roasts in any kind of red sauce, sear it first then slow cook the rest of the afternoon till it is fork tender. The best part is any left overs can be made into a stew very simply. Venison Marsala is allways a hit too.
  19. yep I tried it, didn't like it 100%. While very smooth, it felt tourqy in my hands. A 7in brace height is ok but there are other bows that have more and are a hare lighter too. Oha nd I also didn't care for the price tag but thats just me.
  20. I use Muzzy 3 balde 75 grain, love em.
  21. How old is he? My boy is 6.5 and is all about it. He's got his own bow and is a good shot for a little fella too. Every magazine or sales flyer I get I give to him and he spends hours looking them over and circling things he thinks I need..haha if I listened to him we'd be broke. A few weeks ago my wife said, "which would you rather do, go to disney or go on a hunting trip?" His instant reply was "Huntin of course" made me proud, I gave him an extra cookie for that one ;D He has Adhd and the n ONLY time he is quiet and can sit still is when we go out in the woods hunting, needless to say I take him every chance I can.
  22. Live in Saratoga county Hunt Saratoga county(back yard), Greene, Schoharie a little, Albany
  23. 12-20 feet or how ever far my haul rope is on that day due to tangles and knots.
  24. Yes some areas offer bonus DMP's when it gets closer to season.
