  1. ahh now I see your'e point, yes temperature plays a big role in lenght of the age. Warmer temps will speed the process up but also allow bacteria a chance to grow which is the fine line every one must watch. It seems you know that though being that you check the temp and rotate ice daily. There are alot of factors that contirbute to tenderness, not flavor allways but tenderness can fluctuate due to, age of animal, diet, stress at time of kill, genetics, and also the environment the animal lives in. Oh and beef and venison are very different when it comes to aging, every animal should be aged for different lenghts of time. Venison requires less time to age typically and the gains aren't as great after a while. The usda use's a test where they measure the meat's reaction to cutting and the amount of pressure it requires to do so during the aging process. Again every animal is different and some like those old does you spoke of may require more time to tender up, and you could run into that same toughness on a much younger animal. You just never know. I get worried when I hear guys talk about aging meat, not every one knows like you to take care of it.
  2. Really a month? From what I have read the gains go way down after 14-17 days, I have never had a problem with tenderness or flavor. The USDA web site is good for getting studies on aging meat if you want to read more.
  3. I didn't find it an interesting read at all.... SSDD oh and I don't approve of the youth weekend either, alot of us don't. Never had one before and don't need one now. All the bashing of NYB and what crossbow organization is doing any thing but trying to get their weapon legal to use? Are they going for a earlier open to the season, doing any thing for vets, or any thing for that matter? I am pushing for use of grenades during all seasons, its just easier to kill a deer with a grenade and they look cool too.
  4. I haven't hunted any where yet but we are planning a trip in 5 years. We have started the research phase and have not found many good reveiws from Hadley creek, alot of places cycle too many hunters through the same stands all year and have low success rates. They all tend to over inflate the success rates and include any sighting of any buck in the numbers. Bowsite.com has a reveiw section and you can find hunter reveiws on alot of guides there. My wife is going and she doesn't want to stay in a shack : so our list is kinda small so far but here a few we are watching... http://www.thequailshed.com/index.html http://www.copperscreek.com/ www.midwestbucks.com www.heartlandlodge.com
  5. I used to have a Hayabusa but I sold it this year to buy a camper, I may get one again some day we'll see. I don't know if I could ride again with out being on a 'busa, there ain't nothing else like crackin the throttle on a bike (or fast car). Although a old man bike might be nice...
  6. We drove out to Cortland Friday and picked our new pup. He is a 16 week old German Wirehaired Pointer named Gus, I can't wait to get him on birds. We already have joined Navdha, and lucky for me the chapter in my area is 5mins from the house. Gus is already responding to training very well and I have high hopes for him. The breeder invited me out to hunt over his dogs with him this fall too, I can't wait. Here is Gus with the breeder from two weeks ago.

    How come?

We started because of the extra time in the woods, each of us use's a side hammer ml, no scopes and regular old Black powder. Once I got into it I realized how much fun they are to shoot and find it to be closer to archery hunting then gun hunting, except I can shoot 100yards.
  8. I have seen the old.."I lost my knife" trick a few times..Of course it doen't work when you are by your self.
  9. They are fine as long as the blades fold up when you pull them out of a deer, if they were to stay like they are in the add then they would be illegal.
  10. Really do you use the nocks that have the rotating collars? I have allways glued my knocks, but then again I am new to carbon arrows I have used alluminum for ever. I like mine to stay in place like Culver creek.
  11. umm yea that was me, sorry I didn't know it was your food plot and I really had to go after not skining the rabbit I ate... :-[
  12. We just got a new camper this year and have been camping up a storm, we all love it so thats why I sold my motorcycle to buy it. On top of that, hiking in the ADK, biking, very soon it will be training a dog as we are close to picking a GWP, we shoot alot in the summer, I guess I can put in lawn work and pool care as that takes up a good portion of my time too. My favorite pass time is wine lately...
  13. For alluminum I use Fletch Tite and carbon I use lock tite 4212. I just got new arrows in the mail that I get to cut and glue inserts into ;D
  14. Recently I watched a show on bears in California, some where in the northern part. Any way there were alot of bears in the area, the reason was two fold. One, they were there first, and two, there was food that was easy pickens every where. The town had a guy that went around scareing the bears away with all kinds of deterents. Some bears just would leave the area but most did, the ones that didn't were either killed or brought to the mountains. Like you said A6A6, it would be easier to clean up garbage and grease to make it so there was nothing for the bear to be interested in then try to explain to DEC why you were shooting bears out of season. Cage up your garbage and clean your grill up just to be safe.
  15. Here is a link to a guy describing how to paper tune a bow, its easier then me trying to type it all out. http://www.strictlybowhunting.com/Anov01issue/paper_tuning_TB.htm
  16. You might be able to lower your peep in the string which would force you to lower your pins too but that would change your anchor point. If your not used to making major adjustments you might want a shop to help you out. Of course like you said a new bow would take care of the problem.
  17. Have you ever paper shot your bow? It sounds like your rest is to close to the riser but if it is alinged properly then there is nothing you can do. How is your arrow flight?
  18. Hey do what you gotta do, just don't go tell any one after My buddy did just what you said, he had one on his porch, shot it and DEC came to his door. They took all of his guns, sent him to court, fined him a butt load and threated to take all of his meat in the freezer and revoke hunting privilages too. But if you make DEC aware of it ahead of time by repeated calls and complaints you might just be ok to shoot a bear on site.
  19. You might want to tell your freind not to go shooting bears like that, DEC doesn't like it. They decide if the bear is a menace and will deal with it accourdingly.
  20. I usually just stumble my way through the darkness, my eyes adjust and its not to bad most of the time.
  21. I am thankfull I work inside in AC and that I have a swimming pool at home. It was hot enough that I broke out in a sweat by the campfire this weekend. Good thing the camper has AC too...hehe I am spoiled.
  22. Welcome Matt, I ran a coffee shop at RPI for awhile, Java ++ Are smart guys better at archery? haha
  23. Sure it only took him about two minutes, how long did it take him to clean up the paunch that he sliced and diced in the process. I can smell that smell from here. Were they in a hurry to get out of there before the cops came..haha
  24. Not me.. we do them as soon as possible. We might let them hang a day or two when its real cold but other wise we do them the same day. The meat might sit in the fridge a day but that is safer than out side. As Doc noted aging is done in a controlled air circulated cooler, and it is tested again and again to ensure it is safe to eat.Speaking as a food guy, be carefull if you are aging your meat.
  25. 30-40 is good when hunting, how ever I practice out to 50 in the back yard..thats all I can squeeze in safely.
