My number one request to make NY a better deer hunting state- have actual and accurate data on deer populations and the take not the wet dream math formula that is currently embraced by those who market the numbers (and their actions) the most. Quality aging methods and stats would also be sweet to see the truth on. #2 cite the chit out of all the cheating scumbags out there (poachers, trespassers, tag borrowers, baiters, etc). 2b would be do away with the youth seasons but primarily for the cheating listed in 2. #3 survey all hunters and use that as the majority basis for hunting season delegations and feedback. No more select group stuff or the DEC knows so much more that they can't take your opinion. At least those are me three at the moment. The gun season is ridiculously long but it's timing and bag limits hurt the herd more than anything. Just my ideas thiugh Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

ARs are just the quickest way to make people who cannot count higher than one hand, or who value deer drives as their only/primary hunt tactic. It's a flawed system. The biggest reason I'd support ar s is for safety of the Hunter (supposedly) verifying the target before the 5 shot running deer volley. The idea that 3 pt min on one side would change the game is absurd. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Soil fertility is as key as genetics.... We have the potential for much better deer then we number now almost entirely due to gun Hunter (and the lack of DEC) decision making prioritizing the age of the herd and harvest(s) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I also have a very busy road and another set of neighbors with 3/4 of their farm being ag that add 1-2 years onto every 2.5 yo they kill..... It's supposed to be fun right? The best thing a serious deer manager can do in NY is buy a plane ticket Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -

I fully get what you're saying but that likelihood is not as prevalent when you get closer to urban areas. Adjacent to the family farm we have an old railroad bed (110 feet wide by a mile+ long) owned by some city folks.. Dirt bikes all summer- crossbows and guns all fall... They shoot anything they see. Have counted up to 2 dozen guys. That's just one set of neighbors. We used to let them retrieve what they shot and they started lobbing more so we said no more access for any reason. Found 6 two years ago and parts of two on that border this year. Can't counteract that easily Have heaven on our side but some deer just want to to get shot at even after we "train them" to avoid certain borders. In general my experience has been our qdm/tdm efforts have been most enjoyed by the neighbors.... But then again I won't let be an excuse to lower my standards. Just aggravation that many of us know. -

I agree with this- I just disagree with most properties being a practical size whereas your neighbors don't effect yours..... Especially with taking the Bucks that are passed. Genetics is far beyond NY discussion. -

Unless you have thousands of acres (and i'm not even sure of that relevance) you cant manage a herd. Your neighbors mean more to your NY property than soil nutrients, plots, etc. a few prongs to this issue...it wont change without laws and most will be as bad as their neighbor in spite of letting one walk to its death. As stated above- 2 yos are NY trophies to 90% of the guys out there (at least). My brother shot a 132" 2 yo and was thrilled...I was crushed. Some people get it...most don't want to -

When did he mention the preference of archery over the early ml? I saw his presentation once and heard it the second day here and gathered the contrary opinion. Unless a group wants more deer killed I (personally) do not see the DEC ever agreeing with other opinions. -
Less birds for sure. More predators present and probably keying in on turkey sounds (such as gobbling which travels a long ways). Called for a buddy this am. Had some hens come in, near silent until they saw the decoys in the field then we had a battle of clucks...then they talked but refused to go in the field....guessing it was due to the hawk that kept circling and screaming. You get smart or you get killed.

I bought these things called "tick keys" for the guys at work and they're the best way to remove them. All the other methods may result in regurgitation which is not a good thing (nor is decapitation). Had them at black lake- scary but painless. They essentially killed my lab and when team them through the nydoh 75% carried some debilitating disease. Got one in the swamps last year and did the antibiotics. Swelled to the size of a golf ball and was red for over a month. Scary little buggers Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Absolutely. The lead in meat campaign should come from the DOH. Total crap. I wish hunters could think this chit out and push back. Around 50mill a year in NY hunting licenses... Don't you wonder where it goes and what you should get back? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
Yesterday was a crazy day at work visiting a few jobsites around Buffalo and the burbs...came home and mowed the lawn....then sat on the porch to reflect with a beer when the "no see ums" decided I was the ideal snack. Somewhere between lazy and determined I endured for a few minutes squashing them when they landed. Felt one on my arm, thumbed him and then noticed it was crawling. Instantly I knew it wasn't a fly after all and my fears were confirmed-- it was a tick. An adult black legged deer tick to be exact. Not engorged but creepy deal. I got nailed by one last fall that I think I picked up in the Alabama swamps (which is somewhat known for them). Not sure where this little bugger came from but be careful because I wasn't in any ideal tick habitat this week prior and every night has had a sudsy shower.

have a bunch of friends out west and morels are taken with more seriousness than sheds. I bought the wife some spores off ebay for Christmas (as the odd ball gift) and haven't seen anything come up yet- figured it was the only way I could get into them around here. There are a number of threads on other forums giving tips where to find them but (again) I don't think theyre are many around here. Hen of the Woods is one we do have though. Best of luck- hoping you find more and post some pics of them fried up as well

Is that the top of a morel?!?!?!?!?!

I agree BUT I was unable to chat in a question and after the first question was asked it cut out midresponse. I couldn't get back on. Was there any good discussion or just the words from the clouds? Find it so darn sad we are wasting our license dollars on so many tangent (though essentially non related) issues....CWD, lead fragments in meat, dying raptors.......I feel like every conversation with the DEC hierarchy is just like a parent saying "because I said so". -
love podcasts and bunch of good hunting ones out there.... though the right is more my side I cant believe anyone could wholefuly agree with any political group....issue by issues makes the most sense

same presentation as the spew at the QDMA one love the insertion of personal opinions after options- such as the impending September ML season. -
Atta boys for public land and filming but I would edit the video a little more to not include the panting/standing entrance far footage- in my opinion its not tasteful and only makes us (as a group) look like slobs who don't mind less than lethal performance.in the eyes of nonhunters.

if you judge hunts by the outcome you should've been a golfer instead

They don't want to fine people for not reporting tags for two reasons- 1) it gives them all sorts of leeway in creating how the "the other 60%" of the harvest went 2) it would reduce license sales, including fraudulent (spouses, etc) other ones through data ackonowledgment The DEC is about making Albany happy- not you as the hunter. If you're one of the few fine posters on here thanking them for their job- you're probably bordering someone who manages their land and reap the benefits, and further setting back their goals because rest assured the DCE doesn't know animal numbers they just doctor the take ones. -
Sadly our ranks make it easier to hate than learn or explore. To be the devils advocate on the topic (not necessarily the debate)- any catch those idiot kids from Wi riding the spine shot fawn? Classy move. We will ruin it before anyone has a chance. From my understanding the economic and nutritional impact of hunting in Africa is huge. Most of our ranks and theirs stateside don't realize how much money hunters out into conservation of places and creatures. Exponentially more than other non hunting interests combined. That in itself is a mountain of a point. Antis use Cecil and the trophy hunting term against us. Heck I shoot 4-5 does a year but only shoot high end bucks if and when I do.... Am I meat Hunter? Yup. Trophy Hunter? Yup. Would a non Hunter and Hunter react different to those terms?yup. Guess we need to embrace the hipster hunters getting into it primarily for table fare. I feel we should also S can all the idiots in our ranks quickly. Bad press is the real enemy. Will catch up with the actual debate at some point- sad to hear it was a loss in some regards but it was in enemy terroritory and no idea who our representation was. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
