Food for thought: yearling buck protection
dbHunterNY replied to Buckstopshere's topic in Deer Hunting
I can understand those reasons you gave and I especially understand what's in bold. it takes effort and work to do ones part. I whole heartedly think you all got the shaft in that sense. -
I understand wanting to shoot a buck but your reg season tag isn't tag soup. you can still use it late season for a doe.

you're right. spread and beam is not that difficult. my group can get a 100 land owners and idk how many hutners across 12,000 relatively contiguous acres to do figure it out, that otherwise shot anything legal. I have faith others could too here in NY. -

yea I picked up what he was getting at from the other thread. for the love of NY hunting I'd hope you folks out there would not wait, be already out there, and fill a tag with a 1.5 yr old buck versus a doe in the target area. spitefulness in this way will do absolutely nothing to DEC and instead you'll feel more pain in the target areas. I guarantee that. what's done is done. complaining you fill your share of doe tags means obviously nothing. the only way to deal with it now is to encourage others to follow suite and take a responsible number of doe. then let your voice be heard and DEC will see you don't need the restrictions on buck harvest anymore to increase doe harvest. -
still with the changes I'm sure you taking the time to comment are the hunting minority.

outside 4J went from shotgun to rifle but 4J has always been bow only.
-
I would most definitely think it is. maybe I'm wrong. I'm dumbfounded so much by it i'll be making a phone call.
-
Not everyone gets DMAPS by the boat load. that was my thinking even if they don't have intentions of using a ML they buy the privilege for the tag to use early or for something somewhere else. they're still buying the tag as you said. I shot a 1.5 yr old buck before on state land miles back in. Good for you. I'll never drag a deer that far again unless it's a slammer. lol
-
that's true. if you're filling more than half at best you shouldn't even be applying.

I wasn't referring to the legal regulation definition, but the fact that if a lot get hammered you'll have many less bucks in the future.

WNYBuckHunter's Outdoor Journal
dbHunterNY replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Member Hunting Journals
awesome... seems to me like I could see him being a 4.5 yr old; full skeletal growth, depth of body equal front to back, muscle mass equal front to back, neck connects lower into the chest below the point of the shoulder and leg bone, etc. good luck seeing him this fall. reminded me I should pull a card from the cam behind my house. also should mow the plot it's in one last time. -

must be late.... why is this going to happen??? -
careful of the button bucks this fall out there.
-
for the cost of $15 some might just buy it for another tag to keep them hunting despite doe only.

I'm sure they're good in a place with no hunting as they do a much more efficient job. keep the friggin things delisted though. if they leave the park they're fair game. otherwise they'll eat whats easiest prey. your dog, live stock, or whatever. anyone I've heard of that lives in an area with wolves has a difficult time hunting or keeping assets like live stock safe.

this one went off the deep end. I'm not sure some of you understand the difficulty of any management on a wider public scale than just you and your hunting buddies... i'll telling you. the struggle is real. I think some are a little hard on DEC and claim the sky is falling without looking up. -
Hunting lease - Livingston County, NY
dbHunterNY replied to Pete Collin's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
I guess he's against taking an older hunter that can't get around as easy or a handicapped hunter. I mean they're not man enough? lol i'm sure there's written exceptions in the lease.... I hope. -
I should probably get it. haven't though.

I think we expect a lot from a trail camera but the manufacturer competition helps that. I've had good luck with a version of the Bushnell Trophy Cam. Have a Cuddeback Long Range IR setup a couple days ago. we'll see how I like that one. Wildview and wildgame innovations cams are mostly junk. I do have an Red4 that's still going strong for several years now though.

Food for thought: yearling buck protection
dbHunterNY replied to Buckstopshere's topic in Deer Hunting
in my experience 3 pts to a side doesn't do a good enough job to protect yearling bucks. for antler restrictions with respect to protection of yearlings I like spread more. if we could protect more yearlings without them I'd be all for that. not every deer will fit the mold for ARs. if it's 2.5 and it doesn't meet them who cares. everybody follow the law and it's bigger next year. if the buck is mature and still doesn't then chances are it's big enough nobody will care or think to question a spread requirement that's an inch off. if a yearling gets shot it's not the end of the world. more every year. if a majority due there part and pass on yearlings more often ARs won't matter and you'll have choice. everyone posting in these forums have vested enough time, they should be able to tell the difference with reasonable success and understand relatively why it's a good idea. sure there's ideas of what DEC might implement. however, I don't know how we can talk about DEC restrictions being effective or not when we don't even know what they are yet. -
I'd say so unless you took licking and browsing branches for rubbing. not sure how good of an eye you had on him. it's very typical for me to see velvet through august and by the first week to week and a half into September they're completely cleaning off with hard antler. each deer is different though.

this is my understanding and what I've seen... some can blow up with tine length right now. all in what you see as he said.
-
the tree huggers would hate you ignorantly.

...oh yea another deer went to my parent's they were in FL during much of the season last year. don't know what they've got left.

not sure with how much I started with. took a 3.5 yr old 123 lb doe, a 95 lb 8.5+ year old doe, and one 135lb 5.5 year old doe. all dressed hanging weights. I put the 5.5 yr old doe which was about 54 lbs venison plus added water and pork fat into the good stuff. that stuff's almost gone as I burned through all those back strap steaks. almost all my smoked snack stick dogs with cheese and regular smoked dogs. went through almost all the sausage. other two doe I put into ground venison, steaks, roasts, other cuts, and jerky. jerky has been gone a long time ago last year. still have a couple grocery bags of ground venison and a bag of steaks, roast, and other cuts. probably 30 lbs left.
