  1. I must be lame as well. I can't for the life of me see the sense in paying to travel halfway across the country to hunt deer when I have seven tags to fill here in NY (my bow, reg, 2 DMPs, and ML, plus my wife's 2 DMPs)
  2. I currently use the SST, which are very similar to the FTX. I've had great luck with them, but I've heard and read a lot about the XTP's and wanted to give them a try. If they perform as good, or better than the SST's, I'll stick with them. If not, I'll switch back
  3. I'm sure they won't. I wanted the 250s because I only like to change one variable at a time. Both of my MLs are dialed in with 250gr SSTs so I wanted to go with 250gr XTPs.
  4. In theory, I can see where you're coming from. However, when it's 0 degrees and it's the last couple days a camp during ML season, I don't have to wonder if the 209 primer in my ML has been sapped by being cold for a couple weeks and weather or not it's going to fire.
  5. I just ordered the 300gr XTP's from Bass Pro. I really wanted the 250gr, but 50 extra grains can't hurt, right?
  6. CCI 209 shotgun primers are even cheaper if you buy them in bulk. "ML" primers are just SG primers in different packaging at best. At worst, they tried to gimmick it up and say they're "cleaner" or "burn hotter" or wtf-ever the latest gimmick is. Regular SG primers are all you need to buy.
  7. At my gun shop, you can buy 1000, 209 shotgun primers for $40. I'm sure you can get them cheaper elsewhere, but A) I don't want to guess weather or not it's gonna fire when I pull the trigger, I like hearing the hammer falling against the firing pin, and C) I know it's not gonna short out in the rain. Oh, and don't buy into the hype of "muzzleloader" primers. Regular 209 shotgun primers are what these guns were designed to use, and they're a WHOLE LOT cheaper. In other words, I, personally, wouldn't ever hunt with an electronically fired smoke pole, there are too many things that I don't need to be taking a chance on. If these chances are worth it to you to save a couple pennies (if it's even that much once you figure in the additional cost of the rifle up front), then by all means get it.
  8. Since Cayuga County went rifle last year, I still used my slug gun (Savage 220F) most of the time. I rarely get a shot past 150 yards, and I trust my 220 and my ML (either of them) unconditionally at that range. Out past 150, however, it's either the MLs or the .30-06. I enjoy shooting all of them, so sighting them in is half the fun.
  9. Anybody know where to get some 250 grain Hornady XTP .452 pistol bullets? I've been using Hornady SST/TC ShockWaves but I've heard great things about the XTP's mated with MMP sabots and want to give them a try before it gets too close to the season. Any place I find them online has them on backorder. Trying to find a shop that has some in stock. THanks.
  10. What difference does it make if my 14 yr old cousin is hunting deer with my 220f or if I'm hunting squirrels with my .22? We'll both be in the woods during bow season with firearms.
  11. The private land I hunt I can drive my pickup to within 100 yds, usually feet if I get them in the fields. The state land, however, I use a plastic child's sled.
  12. Why limit yourself to an area with no DMPs? After opening day 7h/7j public lands have little or no pressure on weekdays. DMPs are plentiful as are does to fill them.

    Lake Ontario

Took a charter out of Fair Haven today. Four of us hooked up on seven browns and four lakers. <br /><br />The big laker in the middle is one I hooked up. The smallest brown on the left was definitely a fighter. My buddy fought him for over 20 min!<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />
  14. I guess I don't see where all this fear of ricochet is coming from. Unless you're using FMJ, the risk of ricochet is no greater than with a shotgun slug. <br /><br />And saying that some hunters may take unethical shots with a rifle is no reason to be opposed to rifle hunting. The same hunters who would take unethical shots with a rifle will most certainly do the same with a shotgun.

    bullheads?

I've got quite a few on chicken livers.
  16. Most ALO areas are also catch and release areas. Or like you can't use live bait for bass til June 15. Live baits usually result in a deeper hook that's harder to remove, and usually ends up fatal for the fish. It's not a discrimination towards fly fishermen over bait guys at all.
  17. I don't hunt them per se, but both yotes I saw in my back field this year left in the bucket of my tractor. I'm in southern Cayuga County. Town of Locke about a mile north of Tompkins County line.
  18. I'm borrowing my father in laws gun for my first attempt at turkeys this spring. Tried to convince wife that I "need" another stick but she just called her dad and had him lend me one out of his collection. Oh well. Maybe if I can bag one, she'll let me get my own. <br /><br />Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2<br /><br />
  19. There's a flock of around fifty that come out in my neighbor's field every night. I'm gonna try calling a few mornings to see if I can get them around in the morning and onto my property. <br /><br />Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2<br /><br />
  20. Just saw this article breaking down Der Fuerer Cuomo's law. http://www.americanthinker.com/2013/02/m-new_yorks_safe_act_the_rape_of_the_second_amendment.html Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2
  21. Here is my recipe for smoked venison chili. 2# venison burger, separated into 6 1/3# balls smoked to an internal temp of 160 using hickory wood Two 14.5-oz cans petite diced tomatoes Two 14.5-oz cans petite diced tomatoes with green chiles 1 medium onion, chopped 2 packets chili mix 2 - 14.5 oz cans chili beans Venison balls will be done smoking in around three hours, depending on temperature of smoker. I run mine at 225 degrees. While venison is smoking, put all four cans of tomatoes, onion, and chili mix in a stock pot on stove over low heat, stirring occasionally. Being careful not to boil, you may turn off stove for 15-20 minutes and cover to retain heat. Once venison has reached 160 degrees, remove from smoker and crumble into pot. Add beans and cook over low heat until beans are tender. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve in bowls, topped with sour cream and oyster crackers if desired. Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2
  22. If it was in the slug holder on the stock, you didn't even deserve a tongue lashing. As long as the round isn't in the chamber, it's unloaded according to the ECO in these parts Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2
  23. I've only ever fired Hornady 2 1/2" SSTs. No excessive meat damage if you hit the vitals. A buddy hit one in the shoulder and ruined a bunch of meat, but that'll happen with most any round. Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2
