I've got one with and one without. I haul them both to the blind and will shoot whichever one I need to,

What's everyone's vacation dates for this hunting season?
cdmckane replied to phade's topic in Deer Hunting
I'm taking all of gun and ML season off. -
Hey, a guy can dream can't he? Alaska shouldn't be that bad, as I have friends there that work for outfitters and can get me a deal on shipping the meat home. Drawing a tag, getting time off from work, and getting my @$$ up there are the big drawbacks to that. I'm also playing the NH and VT lotteries, and have thought about some of the western states as well like MN, WI, MT. I really don't want to hunt in Canada..

Came across this on Syracuse.com today. http://blog.syracuse.com/outdoors/2013/09/dec_official_state_moose_count.html#incart_river Moose is definitely on my bucket list. It'd be great to be able to hunt them in NY, if the population can support it. In the mean time, I'll keep playing the Maine moose lottery

1) Read my previous post. We're ex-military. Small arms are weapons. Guns are artillery pieces. 2) Yeah. It was more of a "watch this" moment, knowing she had never fired anything larger than a .22 Hornet.

Is that a dip on the stock and forearm? Mine is the Pro Hunter FX, which is basically the same, but I LOVE that look!
-
Nope. I'll take a nice fat doe for my freezer every time over a buck, especially a big one. Of course, that's probably the reason I haven't filled a buck tag in ten years, and most likely won't in the near future as long as I can get DMPs
-
Disagree. We already have to wait until they have 3" of antlers to put our buck tag on them. Isn't that already AR?

It's my range, on my property. I decided, today, that no one would shoot on this range without a hunting license. That's the only way I can guarantee that they've passed a safety course. This incident made me realize how lax my range rules were. All the guys I regularly shoot with are ex-military so we're ingrained with the range protocol, enough so that it didn't even cross my mind that someone wouldn't know them. My wife witnessed the incident and almost made me fire up the dozer and tear down the range right there.

I shouldn't have said she's no longer welcome. I'll gladly welcome her back, after she passes a safety course and gets her hunting license

She had handled the three previous weapons flawlessly, we had no reason to believe she'd not be safe with the muzzy. Yes, I agree it way MY fault for not explaining the safety rules to her, and I said I learned my lesson, it won't happen again on my range. I was told she was an experienced shooter with the smaller calibers, but had never handled a big game weapon before, but that's no excuse. I posted this just as a reminder for those of us who have ranges and host people who may not be as experienced as we are, to never let your guard down.

Just did a sight in day here at my farm for my regular crew. We started with our small game guns then broke out the big iron. All was going well and we were having a great time until my buddy's girlfriend showed up. She shot my .17 HMR and .22 Hornet for a while, then wanted to shoot what we had. After a couple shots on my Savage 220, I handed her my TC Pro Hunter FX. My buddy and I were chuckling behind the line, waiting for it to kick her good, when she pulled the hammer back, then turned around to ask if it were ok to shoot, still shouldering the TC. After she picked herself up off the ground, she's still not all that happy with me for running her over. Hey, my first priority was getting that rifle out of her hands. Needless to say, she's no longer welcome at my range. Lesson learned: when someone who's never been to your range before shows up, make sure they know all the safety rules BEFORE they handle a weapon!

Whichever one is closest to the door and has ammo in it! That's actually a really hard question. I'm comfortable grabbing any of my 4 for anything out to 150 yds. I guess, if I HAD to pick a go-to it'd be my Savage 220 with a 3-9x40 Weaver shooting 2 3/4' Hornady SSTs loaded with 250gr FTX slugs.

Goals this year are the same as every year: to put enough meat in the freezer that the half a cow I bought Spring '12 will last until taxes come back. This year, that'll be 3, 4 would be great.

Looks like the first real giant of the season has fallen
cdmckane replied to phade's topic in Deer Hunting
I just did a Google search for "244" WI buck" and this is what came up. Figured it was the one. Sorry if it wasn't. To be fair, you wouldn't know the year unless you really looked at the link at the bottom of the page. I know I didn't! -

Baiting/feeding is illegal all year long not just during season

1. I assume they'll at least keep the wind off of ya. I spot and stalk or sit in a permanent tower stand. 2. Don't know, never used any of that stuff 3. See #2 4. Find food (acorns, grasses, corn, beans,), water, and cover and you'll find your deer This place is a great source of information. I also frequent biggamehunting.com and thefiringline.com. The NYS DEC website has a bunch of helpful tips as well. Good luck and happy hunting

Welcome. What part of the state are you in?

Try Blackhorn 209, if you can find it. I'm loading 85 gr behind my 300 gr XTPs and shooting 1.5" 10-round groups without cleaning, just a spit patch between rounds.
-
YFKI, I shoot Rem Core-Lokts in my .30-06. Get them from Sportsmans Guide online. Last time I bought 200 rounds for .93/round including shipping

www.ammoman.com www.bulkammo.com www.targetsportsusa.com www.midwayusa.com www.luckygunner.com www.natchezss.com www.ableammo.com These are my go-to ammo sites if Sportsmans Guide doesn't have what I'm looking for A quick Google search for .30-30 ammo brings up these and quite a few more.

I didn't even run through a whole tank of gas in mine this year. Between chasing a 1 year old around and trying to keep the yard and house in decent shape, I just didn't have time for both the bike and the boat. Boat won out every time because both wife and baby can go along.

I've got 6 tags so far (my buck, ML, my 2 DMPs and wife's 2 DMP's) and hope to get at least one more when they issue leftover DMP's Nov 1. I'll put the first three in my freezer, then I'll try to put one or two in my mother-in-law's, then the rest go to the Venison Donation Program if I don't have willing takers.

Very nice
