  1. If you can find it, you can sit in it. For free, even. ;-)
  2. Nice. The farmer that rents my mother in law's fields planted winter rye this year. I'm not complaining at all! There's always a bunch out there. Can't wait til 11/16!
  3. I have found the Morton's Tender Quick is a bit hard to find. They do have a product locator on their website that I've found to be pretty accurate. http://www.mortonsalt.com/for-your-home/where-to-buy
  4. Here's the recipe my grandmother used to use when my grandpa hunted. My dad just takes his deer and has some sent out for summer sausage, but you can't ever be sure if you're getting your deer or billy bob's gut shot deer that's been in his pickup for a week before it got cut up. Ingredients: 5 pounds ground venison 5 teaspoons sugar-based curing mixture (such as Morton® Tender Quick®) 1/4 cup mustard seed 3 tablespoons garlic powder 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes 1 tablespoon salt 1/2 teaspoon hickory-flavored liquid smoke Directions: 1. In a large bowl, mix venison, curing mixture, mustard seed, garlic powder, cayenne, red pepper flakes, salt, and liquid smoke. Cover with plastic, and refrigerate for three days, mixing well once a day. 2. On the fourth day, preheat oven to 200 degrees F (100 degrees C). 3. Shape the mixture into five logs, and place on a wire rack over a large drip pan. Bake for eight hours, then remove to cool on paper towels. Let cool, then wrap logs individually in plastic wrap. Chill completely before slicing. They also freeze well I do mine at 225 in the smoker for 8 hrs with hickory, and a couple Jack Daniel's oak barrel staves (I get them at Bass Pro) pieces thrown in. One at the start and another at 4 hrs. I don't wrap in plastic, I let them cool, pat them dry, then vacuum seal and throw in the freezer.
  5. Just got done setting a ground blind overlooking a pond at my mother in law's place. Lots of sign around the pond, which is located between 2 40-acre fields planted with winter rye to the east and west, and thick hardwood bedding areas north and south. I wanted to get it set up well in advance of gun season so the deer could get used to it being there. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk 2
  6. I haven't seen anything. I'm in 7J like you and I've never had a problem if I've been in line in the morning on Nov 1.
  7. Lol. Delicate? That's all you got? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk 2
  8. I get it. I don't bow hunt so I'm an inferior hunter and my opinion (one that's shared by MANY bowhunters on this site, BTW) is somehow invalid. Maybe I don't bow hunt because I don't have time to practice enough to feel like I'd be capable of taking an ethical shot on a deer. Maybe I'm able to fill enough tags during gun and ML season to more than fill my freezer, and that of a couple friends as well, that I don't need to spend the extra money on a bow and the bow license. Maybe it's something that I've thought about getting into, but jackasses like yourself have really turned me off to bow hunting because I don't want to become the pompous ass that you display yourself to be on this site. But, really, WTF difference does it make if I bow hunt or not?

  10. I don't bow hunt. But I do squirrel and yote hunt in the very same woods I'll be deer hunting in. How's it work out for me? I'd say pretty good since I still have almost 100 pounds of venison in my freezer from last year. If you're so opposed to the youth hunt during bow season, just buy yourself a shit ton of land, post every tree on the perimeter, deny anyone access and then you can bow hunt without being disturbed. 11. My point was that how is a 14/15 year old shooting a shotgun at a deer any different than me shooting my .17 at a squirrel or my .22 Hornet at a coyote in terms of the shot spooking the deer. Or by moving through the woods. I wasn't aware that anyone had to pay to hunt this weekend. As far as I know, as long as you hold a valid bow license, you've already paid to hunt these 46 days, so saying that this is a weekend you paid to hunt is kinda ridiculous. FYI, those youth hunters paid to hunt this weekend, by the same logic, because they paid for a big game tag that was valid for them to use this weekend.
  12. No scope can know the ballistics of your load, therefore it cannot know the amount of bullet drop.
  13. .My brother-in-law and I are going to try to come up Saturday and fill our ML tags while the weather is still decent so we don't have to get out and freeze in Dec/
  14. If you're giving away 7J tags, I'll take 'em!, or my wife will.

I ordered a TC from Sportsmans Guide and it came FedEx to my door without a problem. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk 2
  16. You said in your first post in this topic that you don't care for it because of all the illegal things it leads to. I fail to see how a 3 day youth season will lead to anything illegal simply because it's a youth season. These illegal things would happen anyway. In case you haven't noticed, people who break the law don't normally care about the law or what season it is. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk 2
  17. How is this germane to the youth season? Do you think this man wouldn't be teaching his grandson these things during the regular season?

Last one I bought in April shipped FedEx to my door with no FFL or NICS check
  19. Grow, what kind of illegal things does the youth weekend open the door to? A "constant barrage of gunfire" could be attributed to sighting in, or recreational shooting. Neither of which is illegal.
  20. If you're set on center-fire rifles, I'd go with a .270 Win or a .25-06. Personally, once my daughter is old enough, she'll be hunting with my 20g slug gun. It's deadly to 200 yds and I won't let her take a shot beyond 150 as long as she's hunting with me. Unfortunately, I guess that means I'll have to get a new slug gun. Well. maybe not. Just in case Savage ever decides to stop making the 220F, I've got three brand new ones, still in boxes, unopened, in my gun room.
  21. I've found them before on public land. If they're near where I want to set up, I just cut them down while I'm scouting. If I ever found some on my land, I'd set up every camera I have in the area then call an ECO to have him look at the pics and press charges for trespassing and the illegal grow.
  22. Nothing at all. Some people just like to bitch. I don't have a dog in this fight, nor do I have a bow license (just picked up a bow and will wait til next year to get a six week head start on gun season). I'm sitting on 500+ acres that won't be hunted at all until Nov 16. WTF is the big deal if I take my nephew, or my daughter, out once they're old enough? It's not like they're taking deer away from bow hunters, none hunt my land. It's highly unlikely they'll even scare deer away from the neighbors that hunt, as I don't hunt near the edges of my property on a regular basis. I'm actually over populated so all my buddies have gotten their DMPs for my area to help me thin the herd, a successful youth hunter would just help matters.
  23. What GreeneHunter said. It'll work so long as your insurance company doesn't start snooping around. It's likely that they won't unless you start having lots of tickets and/or accidents in NYC. That said, my insurance company did follow up with me on a ticket I got downstate just to make sure it was me, so don't be surprised if they do check.
