Congrats. I've got two deer in a day during gun season, but never that close together. Like CF said, don't get used to it.

Christ, your season is 46 days long. At the expense of bow hunters? Really? You can't spare 3 out of 46? I've been outside most of the morning and have yet to hear a shot. There can't be a whole helluva lot of 14/15-year old hunters statewide, so I doubt very highly that they're going to ruin your weekend. How is it any different than if I were in the woods squirrel or coyote hunting?

Nice. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk 2

I don't eat antlers. I enjoy hunting, but I enjoy filling my freezer more. JMO, but I hate eating tag soup. I'll take little bucks over big ones every time, they eat better. Does even more so. My trophy is feeding my family high quality, healthy meat.

Unless you know someone in the area private land is a no-go, that's why public land, what of it there is, is packed. I hit public land maybe one day a year during ML season, and that's only if I'm desperate.

Why? She's ugly and can't sing.

My wife has had her license since before we met, but has told me repeatedly that she has no interest in hunting. Her dad got her her lifetime license so he could have her doe tags. Well, after we got married, those doe tags became mine. The other day, while I was prepping gear for gun season, she said that she wouldn't mind tagging along with me a few times. No problem. Well, yeah, kinda. She said she didn't want anything that had a lot of recoil. Her dad only let her learn on a 12g pump, saying he wasn't going to buy a "little girl's gun" just so she could learn to shoot and not go hunting. All of mine have a fair amount of recoil so I had to find something Fast forward to today, I managed to find a .44 magnum lever action saddle gun with a scope for her to use. It's a buddy's who doesn't use it much. I fired it today and it kicks almost as much as a .223. I'll get her behind it a couple times before opening day. I thoroughly don't expect her to ever even shoulder it in the field, but at least I'll know she won't end up with a shoulder bruise if she does

Like I said in my first post in this topic; I think the law should read "It's illegal to shoot game with the aid of artificial light". If I can take a safe and ethical shot from my stand on the edge of my hay field ten minutes later than the guy who's half a mile deep in the woods, who the f*&k cares? It's not my fault he chose to hunt deep in the woods while I chose to sit in my stand.

Interesting F&S article by David Petzal on respecting your quarry

I guess I'm somewhere in the middle on this one. While I'm excited that I've filled a tag (I'll send pics to my brother and father in law right away), I also respect the fact that an animal had to die to fill my freezer. I actually get the same feeling when I go to pick up the cow I get butchered every year. I understand the respect that's held at the time of the take, but, honestly, I feel it more when I take a package of venison out of the freezer to thaw for dinner. To me, it's how one balances these two emotions that matters. -
To wit: according to my regs book, sunset occurred ten minutes ago here and there's plenty of safe shootable light, even with open sights.
-
That really sucks. Hope you heal up and can get in for bow season next year.
-
IDK where you are, but they're logging off Summerhill State Forrest right now. They have been for a couple years now. I was up there scouting today and saw some signs to that effect. I'll try to go up tomorrow after work and take pics of the signs.

That should be the law here in NY. For the same reason; there's plenty of safe, shoot-able light left when the book says it's "sunset". Likewise, there's plenty of safe, shoot-able light before "sunrise". I've always said the law should read "it is illegal to shoot (bow or gun) with the aid of artificial light". That way you can take advantage of ambient light that's still available once "sunset" occurs.

Gun hunting too! You can't shoot them if you're sitting on the couch!

When you're ready to do some real free-range, non-baiting hunting, let me know and I'll take you out on my 500 acres here in CNY. I may not have "trophy-class" bucks here, but it's fair hunting with no bait or mineral blocks. BTW, I won't charge you what you'd charge me to come shoot one of your penned-up monsters. -
FWIW, I get groups with my unscoped muzzy @ 3" @ 100 yds. That's minute-of-whitetail all day long.

I see your timed feeders and mineral licks are working as intended. -

OH, come on, who doesn't enjoy "hunting" deer behind a fence so they can't get away?
