  1. i agree with what everyone is saying. i was fortunate that when I started hutnign I had someone teach me how to butcher the deer. I wouldn't trust a butcher. Also call me crazy, but when i eat venison that is butchered at home vs. by a processor it tastes better. Also butchering it in my garage, with friends, and a beer - it's all part of the story/adventure. We usually give my wife some of the backstraps and she cooks them up for us and we take a "break" to eat....life is good
  2. don't forget if you do early/september goose you have to buy the new duck stamp - those are july 1st - june30th....only 3 weeks left before we can hunt geese !
  3. when people ask me why I hunt and fish - this is the type explanation i give - enjoying Nature, friends, family !
  4. saw this article in the online outdoor life - thought i would share it: http://www.outdoorlife.com/photos/gallery/hunting/2010/08/kristy-lee-cook-goin-country?photo=0
  5. I've been hunting for 34 years and "sits" called me an anti-hunter for my position on crossbows....strange I'll stay out of this one...no one is going to be changed either way by the arguments posted here...
  6. that's a bummer - moose are beautifull to see in the woods. I've been to newfoundland, canada twice moose hunting, they have moose like we have rabbits
  7. leave it the way it is as far as season start/finish. moving it up would mean an extra week with the leaves still on the trees. As far as the 1st question i disagree that the 1first 3 weeks of bow season are no good. I see more quality bucks during that time frame then the rest of the season - the only bummer is with the bow, they aren't always in range.
  8. Larry Czonka - he mostly does fishing shows, but he is a hunter too - also ex-nfl payer Would also like to meet Tiffany from outdoor channel
  9. elmer fudd - sorry for the offense
  10. this is a tough in this day and age, but a few things that have worked 1) offer to trade for work on the farm or house 2) walk up the door with a fresh home baked pie (this has worked twice) 3) follow up - if you get permission - a)give them venison after the season send a xmas card c) drop by in the summer to talk - don't just show back up before hunting season and don't look like Elmer fudd
  11. yes i will shoot a small buck - i don't get a lot of time in the woods (i work to hunt, not hunt to work) so I consider any deer a "trophy". The thrill of the hunt and the tranqulity of the time in the woods out in nature are 2 of the reasons i hunt - but i would also sterotype myself as "meat hunter". It's all in the way the meat is cared for - quickly skinned and then the way my wife marinates and prepares vension it tastes better than beef. I agree with many of the other posts about eating what you kill is paying honor to the animal so the size of the buck doesn't really matter - it's all about a good time with nature and friends and the stories that get told over and over, but never seem to get old - my friends and I have just as good stories about little bucks as big ones...
  12. every gun is different - but in my case i shoot a rem 1187 rifled barrel with lightfield slugs - great grouping out to 100 yards
  13. sounds like a good show - great looking host doing some hunting - i don't get much time for TV - but i'll have to try and catch this one i've seen a few women hunters in the woods....none have looked like the IDOL star
  14. thehunter is correct - i would never doing anything illegal - just put the data on a web page
  15. btw - i filed a freedom of information request with the NYS police this morning to see if I can get the names of people that have filed FOI requests to get the pistol permit lists. I'm curious to see if they give it to me. Can't do much with it, other then harass them
  16. with your mailing address they can target us for harrasment. As far as criminals - it gives them a target if they are looking for handguns- mine is locked in a safe they can't break into, but not everybody has large safes
  17. yes it lists your address - so the criminals and anti's know where we live
  18. MR VJP - your response is right on. This may sound extreme but this move by the anti's is just as bad as terrorists. I contacted my state senator's office Friday and there is a bill pending to make the disclosure of this information illegal - the problem is that only prevents it in the future - for now the data is already out there. I'm going to call Albany Monday because I think the same law (freedom of information request) that made the information available to the public also has a provision that they government has to disclose who they gave it to. Can't do anything to the person... but with the power of the internet we may be able to make their life a little more miserable...
  19. this may be old news, but i just found out. Some jerk created a website and posted the list of all NY people that have pistol permits...right now the law is written that this is legal....call your local NY elected officials to make this illegal. http://whospackingny.com/
  20. non-hunting question to DOC: If Your role is moderator Then - why would you say thanks to "sits" who has a decidedly one sided point of view ?
  21. lol - i've gotten that one several times...one time I said to the teenager - do you want to pay my taxes ? The rude kid pulled out a single dollar bill and tried to hand it to me
  22. hunters with double standards true story - friend shoots a deer on property we have exlusive permission to hunt - deer goes about 10 yards onto ajoining property and dies - we drag back to our side and gut, etc. Neigbor sees blood trails call DEC and says we are poaching - nothing happens becuase it's not true - but he tells landowner to not let us hunt there....fast forward a few weeks later.....i'm sitting on watch - doesn't this guy come walking across our hunting property ! - being sarcastic i ask him "who the hell are you and are you lost ?" - doesn't he try to justify the trespassing - he said he heard on a scanner someone hit a deer with a car so he wanted to look for it - little did he know the land owner we have permission from is NYS trooper.....
  23. i hunt in Georgetown and Solon areas - your right between the two
  24. i've had similair problems in the past - no sure fire solution, but two things i have done seem to have lowered the incidents 1) I walk my property alot - even in the off season and I carry a hand gun at all times....2) call another police agency until you get someone to arrest a person....sheriff, NY trooper, etc. - once someone is arrested word travels like wildfire. 3) team up with neighboring landowners if possible. i've done that and i've "doubled my eyes" - good luck
  25. looks like one sure got a hold of it It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. Mark Twain
