  1. Yes - warm temps & full moon keeps daytime activity to a minimun, in my area & personal experience.
  2. I wouldn't suggest anyone take time off from work this week to hunt based on Mr. A's predictions, the full moon, your two sightings and the 60-70º temps. That is unless you have illuminated sight pins on your bow for dawn/dusk shooting. Alshiemer's annual prediction sells books, calendars, TV air time and web site advertising. He takes an annually occuring event, tries to wrap his guidelines around it and then puts it into a neat $9.99 calendar. Just think of how many calendars he'd sell if he added predictions for peak fall foliage or the 1st flock of geese flying south or ....
  3. They've got you figured out!! It's all part of the game we hunters play with the deer. Or are they playing tricks on us?? LOL
  4. Terrific buck!!! Hope you're ready when he finally comes out in the daylight. Wouldn't it be awesome if he wondered past your son!!! ???
  5. Going to do it, huh? Like I mentioned, I did a T/C Hawken percussion kit & it was fun!! It's been decades, but I do remember having a problem with bluing (or brown) the barrel. Mostly the size of it, heating it up or getting an appropriate container to put solution & barrel in... Don't recall! I'm sure you've done all your research and made your decision based on what you want. FYI - The cost of the parts for the kit you mentioned is approching a decent already built model. There is a lot of self gratitude building one and shooting or hunting with it!!!
  6. Thought I was in deer hunting heaven this AM. No wind, could see movements and thought I could hear sounds okay. That's until 3 deer were on top of me at 20yds before I knew they were there. Couldn't move, so let them walk. Saw 3 more (doe/fawns) about mid-day. That's more deer than I've seen total for the 1st week. Get past the full moon & the 60-70º temps - should start to see more movement. Halloween has always been a deer movement date. Little movement to/from food sources upto then & ramps up fairly quickly after that day.
  7. Used to be stamps!!! Remember having to put signature across face of stamp?
  8. Think the wind was worse today than other days. I've hunted everyday, at least 4 hours with only seeing one doe & her fawns. They must be hunkered down, out of the wind. Something has to happen.......
  9. Hunted turkeys on Sugar Hill State Forest for years. With 9000 acres, some pretty remote areas with only seasonal access roads and horse trails. Never hunted deer there, apparently I should have. ???
  10. Prior to retiring, I was a Quality Engineer & Quality Manager. Before going back to college in my mid-30s, I had worked in production machining & at a salt mine. Spent some time working for the government during the peak of the Viet Nam war. Have worked for Fortune 100, mid-sized and small privately owned companies. Been on the shop floor and in the offices - on both sides of supervision.
  11. 3rd day now; wind still whipping, treestand swaying, deer hunkered down and nothing moving but the turkeys!!
  12. You should have put the doe out of her misery!!! Put your tag on her and call the DEC office. Almost positive you would have gotten a replacement tag.
  13. It's all about the travel routes to/from seasonal food sources & bedding areas. Late season deer hunting & into winter opens up a different scenario of food/bedding than fall or spring/summer. Then you throw in the rut in the fall and most rules disappear.
  14. You guys are making me nervous! ??? I do not have a spare release & would be out of commission if mine failed. That would ruin my day!!!! Mine's about 5 years old, may have to invest in a back-up release.
  15. Did hear that NY is in a weather pattern for the next couple of weeks. Same weather as we have been getting for the past few day repeated. Below normal temperatures, cloudy, chance of showers & a few sunny days mixed in. Take that for what it's worth...??
  16. Thanks for the info, wztirem - our site researcher!! Always thought the combination of screw-in steps or the strap-on ladder sections used with hang-on stands was an accident waiting to happen. Suppose if you used the life line or were secured to the tree all the way up to the stand you'd be okay. I won't use them, others love them. Whatever makes you feel safe or secure.
  17. Any time you cook venison in a crockpot with liquid it's superb. Cook in the bags with liquids work great also. Thanks for the recipe!
  18. Deer Search is the only outfit I'm aware of that does what you are saying. They have an eastern/central NY contact, probably not LI. Give them a call. may refer you to some one local. http://deersearch.org/contact-us/deer-search-inc/
  19. I tie wrap the material to as many parts of the platform as I can. Does not move in the wind as much as you'd think!
  20. WOW! That's really rustic & very neat!!! Great hide away deer camp!
  21. Now the weather is saying for the Rochester area; Rain ending early Sat AM with strong, gusty winds. Won't hear a damned thing. I prefer a little sound warning, not the BAM - here I am at 20yds. ??? I'll still be out there!!!
  22. Use Winchester 3 1/2" Supreme Elite #5 shot. When is enough a enough? When you feel comfortable that your gun/shell is giving a good density at various yardages. Don't know as there is a magic formula or number. These shells work for MY gun & may not for YOURS!!!!
