  1. I've always been a NYS history buff. The iroquois and the colonilization of WNY were my favorite eras. Even though my father got me started hunting at an early age, I still managed to go into the woods and daydream. Lot of you know that hunting & the woods are also the ideal places to escape from any pressures of day-to-day life. Especially in the spring & summer when all the flora and fauna are coming to life. I love nature and observing it! Think I'd be happy with a walking stick across my lap instead of a weapon. Ex.; Although I saw many deer yesterday, the best experience was watching 2 squirrels playing tag in the pines with a small hawk. The game (for the squirrels) went on for ~1/2 hour and was pretty neat until the hawk got frustrated and flew away.
  2. After a long, frustrating dry spell - yesterday was like some one turned on the switch! Saw deer moving from 1st to last light. Small buck appeared out of nowhere and we had a stare-down. Another medium sized buck was chasing 4 does. Saw some of the same deer several times, so they are finally moving. My bowhunter's log shows 2 bucks & 13 does for 10/30 with 10hrs hunted.
  3. Yes, I have opinions about predicting the rut. I don't constantly air my opinions. When others do, I'll chime in letting members know there are other trains of thought. Not everyone is a brain-washed robot that spews out the propoganda of others. I'm not going to keep looking over my shoulder to see if you are lurking in the dark, I'll keep stating my opinion. Be it right or wrong, whether you agree or not.
  4. If he's the Deer Doctor, gotta be true!?! Guess I need to change how I use my bleat can.
  5. NYantler, don't tell the other members of this forum that you don't have an agenda to promote the hunting of trophy bucks and publish the details on your website! Don't try to shove what may be good or profitable for you down the throats of hunters everywhere by sugar coating trophy hunting. I have to assume you helped with the alternate plan. If not it sure fills your niche, doesn't it?
  6. WOW, a challenge to Mr. Rutting Moon. ???
  7. Agree with you Culvercreek, lot of double talk and misleading plan benefits. In fact I had started a response VERY similiar to yours, but trashed it.
  8. He also said it would be a trickle & weird rut. Sort of a disclaimer in case he errors in his prediction.
  9. You can dress this up anyway you want - AR, QDM, herd management, bigger & healthier deer, mature bucks, .. They all eventually produce more trophy class bucks for the hunter. The original listing's attachment stated a benifit of the plan was more available record book bucks! Whitetails have survived in nature for millenniums, until humans almost eradicated them. Why not allow them to be as they were without our interference? Believe it or not, none of us have the credentials to play God.
  10. “Hunting and habitat manipulation for hunting on public lands, in parks, sanctuaries and refuges, is a violation of public trust,” "Hunting and managing deer and other animals is increasingly being tagged by scientist for putting “evolution in reverse.” It makes smaller and weaker animals more likely to survive. Thus the deer-management paradox: The more you hunt, the more deer you get." Wish it were closer to me, love to see just how stupid these "Hug an Animal" fanatics are!!!!!!!
  11. Wow, squirrels with a bow! My hero!! LOL
  12. I practice out to 40yds, but my comfort zone is 30 or less. Actually have 40 yard markers around my treestands I call my "desperation" shot. Have to be something spectacular for me to launch an arrow to 40yds. Most kills have been at 20yds (+/-5yds).
  13. Nothing wrong with that!!! Spend all year looking forward to sitting in the woods, staring out into the brush, trying to pick out any movement. Seeing the crows flying, turkey making noises, busy squirrels and hopefully a few deer all make for an enjoyable day. Simply to get away from the day to day routine and air your brain out for a brief period. And then there is the 60 second adrenaline rush that makes the whole experience worthwhile.
  14. We all know it would be cheaper to fill the freezer with a 1/2 a beef than venison. Then we could all be glued to the couch with the remote control permanently attached to our hand!! Not for me! I love sitting in trees! ;D
  15. Are you try to justify this deer yourself? Knarly rack, be a great buck! Trophy buck is all in the eyes of the shooter.
  16. Most members have already attributed that historical time frame as when they have the highest success rate.
  17. What do you feel is the eventual effect of using estrous scent & bleat cans of getting them to respond in the future? Will the bucks come in, but stay at a distance looking for the doe? Or will they always respond with only one thing on their mind? Inquiring mind....
  18. And not a Photoshop cut & paste. The bruiser needs to be hunging vertically. Oh yeah, with his tongue out & a blood spot! Make sure your son smiles for the camera. ;D
  19. Best of luck with your plan! Sounds like you have him set in an almost predictable pattern. Hope you get him.
  20. There are atleast a couple of theories of predicting the annual whitetail rut. Alshiemer's is one. If you believe in his predictions, that is your right and I respect it. I don't personally believe in his theory 100%, but find it interesting all the same. That's only my opinion. Both schools of thought put the rut in a similiar peroid of time. Simply different ways at looking at the effect of the moon phase or photoperoidism on predicting the rut. You are correct, there is no starting gun for the does to go into esterous on Nov 15th! Some are early, some are late - depending on age, conditions, available bucks, not being bred at their 1st esterous, etc. No need to butt heads over what me believe in or opinions we have. I'm hoping we'll both be there when it eventually takes place!
  21. Welcome aboard! Find it interesting that you converted your husband to hunting. Put in a free plug for your artwork! Where can we see some samples of your work? You have me interested, if the pic/icon of the turkeys is your work.
  22. The couch begins to call me when I'm in a tree and the wind is whipping 30mph & it's snowing or raining horizontally. LOL Back to the question. Wild animals do what they want & when they feel the need to do it. They are attuned to pending barometric changes. Movement (feeding) before & IMHO mostly after changes. They generally tend to move about more in darkness during a full moon. Other moon phases - kinda, sorta, maybe you could get some movement pattern. The location, terrain and the deer herd themselves factor in to the equation. What I'm saying for my area may not apply to yours. Then you throw in the rut and all these established behaviors go down the drain. Their unpredictability makes them fun to pursue! You hunt when you can & where you are allowed. If you could predict being in the "right place" at the "right time", would it be hunting??
  23. Warm temperatures, full moon and gusty winds stink!!!! Take it for what it's worth - starting Nov 2nd weather is supposed to really cool off. Lows around 30º & daytime highs in the 40s. About time!! Let's get the game on!
