That pot was already stirred up a while ago. ???

We're getting way off course here!! I don't understand your undying devotion to the rutting moon theory. But I recognize your opinion as I hope you do mine! I absolutely understand the working person's dilemma, struggled with the optimum time off myself for a few years. Then realized I was never going to pre-schedule my time off and the peak rut together. Took the shotgun approach with vacation time; several long weekends, put my time in the treestand and hope for the best. To all of you terrific working class individuals that are contributing to my Social Security, I appreciate it! Don't be hatin' - but this is the 1st year retired and I am going to have pizzas & my mail delivered to my treestand. So, let them boys & girls rut when they want to.

Usually wear an inexpensive pair of bibs in whatever camo pattern my jackets are in. Underneath you can wear whatever; thermals, sweatpants, jeans, ... I would highly suggest a red or green handkerchief thought! ???

Aren't these the same guys, the before photo???

Oh the good old days; Home delivered milk, the bread truck from the bakery would stop in the middle of each block, door to door salesman, leave you backdoor unlocked, homes ruled by mom's wooden spoon or ruler, neighborhood mom & pop grocery stores, lawyers were few and far between and mostly for real estate and wills, business and financial transactions sealed with a handshake, kids went to the park 10 blocks away and played all day unsupervised,... We've come a long ways since then, haven't we....???????? "What a long strange trip it's been."

Bravo!

Definitely no celebrities or pro staffers, average Joes. Everyday hunting situations - good & bad, NYS locations and "something learned" from each episode.

Suppose just for a minute you are correct, don't agree, but suppose. Eventually we'll know exactly when the does go into peak estrous over, for agreement sake, a 7 day period. Utilizing this science based, data supported theory, those 7 days are when all hunters will be out seeking the bucks. This would be a great benefit to hunters for scheduling vacations or time off. Hunting is a sport of chance and luck, minimized by experience and tactics. Your implying it will become a scientific, controlled exercise? It's the unexpected appearance of a buck that gets my adrenaline pumping! If I knew when to expect this I'd more than likely lose interest in the pursuit. Hunting as a sport would then die out or possibly simply be renamed Harvest Season. I do believe one of the triggers for the whitetail rut is photoperoidism. Also not convinced it is directly related to the specific full moon you're implying. That's merely a coincidence with the specific shortened daylight needed as a factor in starting the rut. What if - there were some natural phenomenon like a volcano eruption and it blocked the moon's reflective capabilities for the specific full moon needed to initiate the rut, it wouldn't start then until the next visible full moon? If you have facts that support this connection of photoperoidism to the rutting moon - show me. I can be swayed, but not by hearsay.

Was going to Ohio to hunt with crossbow last year. New crossbow broke during 2nd practice and returned it. Ohio hunt fell through about the same time. Here's what I'm stuck with: 5 each - Carbon Express Maxima Hunter 350, 22" bolts with moon notch, 4 each - G5 Montec 125gr broadheads, 2 each - of same 125gr practice broadheads. Shot crossbow twice with practice heads, everything is basically like new. $55 total, includes shipping. $50 if local P/U. PM me if interested.

We all feel your frustration!!!! Highway maintenance is probably a very small portion of your county's budget. Look-up your county's budget online, it's public record. You'd be amazed! Assessments and equity is a folly at best. You can fight this, but only with facts or data and only to a point.

Like you said (Doc), applying scientific methods and data collection would be fruitless or generalized at best. It also as you mentioned a very generalized occurrence to the specific does home range that comes into estrous. This is an annual event that occurs in a specific species of wildlife. Is there such a thing as hard, fact based data that can predict wildlife behavior with any accuracy? Wild being the key word. Generalized predictions or "Best Guess-timates", maybe. We all know when it generally occurs and hope to be hunting during that timeframe.

This guy is going to be bait for more coyotes if it's in season & close enough with bow or muzzleloader. I've read that if there is an established population they will kill at least 25% of the whitetail fawns. Sure they raise hell with the turkey poults also. Also read a very disturbing piece of propaganda promoting coyotes about them eating 1000 mice/year/coyote. That would be perfect if that was the extent of their damage to domestic & wild animals.

TV hunting shows to the hunter are similiar to Methadone to the heroin addict. An artificial high that gets them through life's stresses! Both know it's not real, but need to experience the high no matter what they have to endure. See it for what it's worth and it's face value, take it or leave it! It's not real life!! The key factor here is free will and the remote control!

Amazing! Awesome! Exquisite! Can't think of a strong enough word to describe your beautiful photos!!!!! If this is only a hobby, you've missed your calling in life!

You've got a couple of funky bucks, bud! This piebald and the palmated bucks, strange! Sure your secret spot isn't up by the Ginna nuclear power plant?

Look at the fawn off to the left staring at the buck. "Who are you? You're not my momma! What's on your head?" Neat photos!

Anybody have a decent Venison Chili recipe?
nyslowhand replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
Chili is like art, each person has their own rendering of what's good. Here's mine: 1 - 1 1/2 lbs cooked venision (ground or sausage), 2 lg cans stewed, diced or whole toamatoes, 3 cans of 3 different varities of beans, Green peppers, mushrooms, onions and 2 pkgs spicy chili mix. I'm a whimp and have only used one pkg chili mix before & can't taste it, so 2 works. Large crockpot for ~6 hours on low. Get it cooking on high for ~1 hr then low for ~4-5 hrs if you want. Oh yeah, need a loaf of Italian bread too. Guess crackers would work as well. Add anything you like or take out what you don't. Hint: add venision, 1 can tomatoes, 1 can beans, extras and see how much room you have in crockpot. Then add whatever else will fit. -
Unvited guest. Got a couple of so-so photos last year. As you can see in the sequence, gets his pic taken and backs up.

Starter Trail Cam Recommendations?
nyslowhand replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
When I think I'm going to move a trail camera to a new location, I carry a pair of prunning clippers. Anything that can blow or move in the mind will raise havoc with empty photos. Guess you found this out! One other thing I learned the hard way was to have cam facing north. So it's not influenced too much by sun glare. -
A whole new world has opened up for you, hasn't it Ediie?

Okay I'm dumb, again! Link does not take me to any video. Never tried fake scrapes. So today I make two near a couple of my stands. Zip tied fresh cut branches ~4' off the ground, kicked leaves & dirt out and initiated it. Curious to see if it gets visited.

Did you just come from the Jets fan or property taxes topic? lol What you are implying was not my intent when I initiated this topic! Sorry if I was not PC, possibly a poor initial choice of words for the topic title. "Historically, when have most of your bucks been taken during the season?" Better?

So what is the experiment? See if they still respond to mock scrapes - or - if they prefer coffee to gatorade? :-\
