How inconsiderate, missed your b'day. Now that you're 4yo, what's that in "web" years, 60yo? John, you've done a great job with this forum! Deserve a lot of kudos for being the person behind the scenes!!!! Although I may disagree with mods giving some members within heated topics such a "long leash", admittingly it's better than having too much censorship. They do a good job overall! Love this site! Hope it's here for a long time to come! Happy B'day and congrats to Burmjohn, the mods and HuntingNY. Oops, forgot the sponsors..?

Bet you won't see this on CNN. Unfortunate thing is homeowner wasn't a better shot and a lot of taxpayer's dollars will go into trying and imprisoning the surviving perp. Not to condone the taking of another individual's life, but if they choose a life of crime it becomes an occupational hazard. Need to see many more of these types of stories, great publicity for crime prevention.

Question regarding angle of entry of bolts on targets
nyslowhand replied to Dr Ignominious Death's topic in CrossBow Hunting
NO, this is not normal! Sort of goes back to paper tuning a vertical bow for just this issue. If this is a decent, "name brand" Xbow, shouldn't be a mechanical issue with assembly, limbs or cam timing. Disclaimer is, a lot of Xbows are made in China. More than likely you're not loading limbs evenly with your manual cocking method. Tendency is to pull harder/more with your favored arm. Some rope cockers have rollers that compensate for just this issue. Other than that, can revert back to any vertical bow's arrow selection &/or tuning. Mostly personal preferences! Depends on the Xbow's setup, bolt/arrow selection, vane length, broadhead that your Xbow shoots best. A different vane length may work better for you, either shorter or longer than the PileDriver vanes Lots of good info on the web, especially the better, strictly Xbow forums. Their members have years of experience to share! -
LMAO

Hell with the sheds! LOL! In 5 months you'll initiate that new Xbow!

Oh boy, yet another popular and logical bill that died within the NYS Enviromental Committee....? Agree with the majority - makes no sense to display it, only have it on your person. How stupid would I have to be to have an issue with a hunter and try to get close enough to record their backtag number...? Unless I were an ECO "packing heat"!

Great job & very cool! What are the items on the lanyard between the call and the striker? Looks like spurs, but not sure about the round object..! X'section of leg bone..? Part of shot shell..?

FYI - Last year at same date as your 2014 photos, I got a very similarly sized buck on my cams. He turned into a very nice, big 8pt. Can only hope, huh?

Questions about buying land
nyslowhand replied to TheHeavyHand's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
Any good real estate attorney should check these restrictions &/or carry-over provisions. Using a "bargin" attorney isn't always in your best interests. Yeah. your 1st visit probably will be to a bank. Not necessarily to get pre-approved, but more for what they can or can't do for you. -
Questions about buying land
nyslowhand replied to TheHeavyHand's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
Silmilar process as buying a home, just different..!?! My suggestion is to walk the specific property numerous times to see if there are any abandoned vehicles, farm equipment, piles of tires, old wells, etc. Removal of these before the sale can be made the seller's responsibility in the purchase offer by your attorney. Any access rights that might get carried over to your ownership can be a PITA. After the sale, you're SOL. Also, if you come across any treestands, that should set an alarm off of potential intruders. I'd find out from the seller who specifically had hunting or general access permission, including names & contact info. Generally a person who has permission to be on a property, whether hunting, snowmobiling, ATV'ing, hiking, horseback riding, etc have no clue of any new ownership!?! Like buying a home, the survey will be the buyer's financial responsibility. Which depending on the property size, habitat &/or time of year (vegetation) it's surveyed, can get expensive. If it's a larger property, you may want to go with a surveyor that does the typical physical staking survey and a GPS option. Each town has their own laws regarding putting structures on a property. Any more, a lot of towns don't allow trailers or modular homes and each town has their own definition of these. Regulations vary from town to town within the county. Town accessor can answer these questions. Parking a RV/camper on a property is NOT a structure & shouldn't impact your taxes...? You should talk to a tax consultant to asnswer any questions about that scenario being considered a "2nd home". The county typically isn't involved in these local ordances, all they want is your property registered so they can tax you. FYI - Any (fixed) structure will increase your taxes, as will improvements like utilities. Good luck! -
If you're not aware of it yet, those having eBay accounts may have their personal info shared. Reportedly, only personal info was hacked. Believe all financial info is retained on PayPal, a completely seperate site. May be prompted to change password when logging in, but definitely do so regardless!!

Very nice! Congrats! Kool! Big old "noggin" on that dude!

If that's the case, then backdating to conception, maybe around early to mid-October..? Sorry Wooly, don't mean to hijack your thread!!
-
Awww, Bambi, how cute..!!! Thanxs Wooly, yet another great wildlife photo(s)!!!!! Anyone have their fawn birth backdating chart handy? Is this one that was conceived during early season? Maybe a couple days old..?

What's being discussed here is a "shock response" by a gobbler to a loud noise. IMHO & what many others have said is it's more about the loud noise than how natural it sounds. Damned gobblers will repond to train whistles, police or fire sirens, woodpecker sounds, thunder, dogs howling, crow calls, gun shots and on & on! Although it may exist, I have no scientific data to support what my personal experience tells me. Distance (proximity) can be your best friend when getting a shock gobble to a loud noise. Meaning, at greater distances depending on terrain & habitat, the sound level diminishes and you may not evoke these desired shock responses.

It's mainly about trimming and bending a diaphram to fit the roof of your mouth. Then you can easily refine the sounds you make. If it doesn't fit your mouth well, the call's quality/$$ won't help.

Scouting this year, I've yet to locate one on the roost like I typically have done in the past. From ~8:30-11AM, I've got one to gooble on several different days. So,..YES!
-
If you have located them on the roost...If it is a flock of toms & hens as you mentioned.....If you haven't bumped them..! Do a search for How-to; tree yelps, fly-down calls and calling in hens. If you can't set-up in their usual travel route, sometimes you can divert them by calling the hens in. It's a given this time of year, where the girls go, the boys are sure to follow! Not sure the name for the behavoir, but hens seem to have a desire to join up with other hens. Flock instinct..!?! If you can pull this off, it is heart pounding with all the eyes sizing up the area (blind). Draw you own conclusions from that! Good luck! BTW - No offense to the newbie OP, could a moderator put this in the turkey hunting category.
-
KUDOS to all of you that are taking a youth out hunting. You & the youth(s) have my utmost respect! Best of luck to all this weekend!

Of course this wont happen opening day!!
nyslowhand replied to LI OUTDOORSMAN's topic in Turkey Hunting
Amen to that. Hen calls are stricly for use when you're ready to pull the trigger. Can get away with sparingly using a locating gooble call. This is exactally why some turkeys on public lands are so hard to call in. -
So, crossbows are ~2500 year old technology. Here's a little more updated version from WWI, a grenade launching Xbow. Are there provision within Safe Act concerning these?? Sorry, WAY off topic!
