  1. Why do I always love these threads ?? Opening weekend, WWII vintage Springfield 03A3, in 30-06, of course...Sporterized with a Bishop stock and an old Weaver V7 scope...Handloads with Sierra 150 grain spitzers..
  2. Yeah,,That's what I thought had happened when I saw the cast... Good luck with the recovery I hope your periwinkle aligns properly with your dingleheimer and the duxswort mends evenly.. Good luck Cynthia..hope everything heals well ...REALLY...<<grin>>...
  3. Let me know...I'll meet you there...<<smile>>....
  4. One of my buddies has about a dozen whitetail shoulder mounts. One of them is a full sneak and it is my least favorite of the bunch. Just sayin'...Just my opinion..
  5. Hard to beat really FRESH fish, Rob...They were caught between 1:00 and 2:00 PM, fileted by 3:00 pm and on the table at 5:00 PM...THAT is fresh fish...<<grin>>....
  6. Pan broiled smallmouth filets, caught this afternoon, dusted with a small bit of Old bay and done until they SLIGHTLY flaked over medium high heat, along with a nice casserole of mac and cheese ( a la The Mermaid) done with XTRA SHARP Woodhull cheese... Oh yeah...And a couple of cold Labatt's...
  7. In my 66 years running , sitting and rolling around in the woods, I have had exactly TWO ticks on me.. On was a big ol' wood tick that I found after handling some fresh fox pelts perhaps 30 years ago..The other was a pinhead sized deer tick that I found on the back side of my right bicep perhaps 2 years ago.. However, I have friends who have hunted generally the same areas that I have who seem to have ticks on the nearly every time they go in the woods... I can't figure it out..Perhaps I just TASTE bad to them...
  8. Geeze, this is getting pretty complicated.. I'm probably gonna die...
  9. The number one item today on my honeydo list was to go to the landfill... I loaded my pickup with trash, garbage and recyclables.. Then as an afterthought, I remembered today is Veteran's Day..I checked the landfill flyer ( on the side of the fridge) and SURE ENOUGH, the landfill is closed today.... Now I have the choice of either unloading the truck and reloading it tomorrow, or to drive around with a truck full of trash.. Worst part is, I'm a VETERAN....<<sigh>>....
  10. Come on up....We have LOTS......

    QuickLOAD

Range HELL !!.. I'm ready to go kill a deer a week from Saturday ....<<grin>>... I have a bunch of 30-06, a bunch of 7MM08 and a bunch of .280 Rem loaded up.... The 30-06 gets first chance to play this year....After that, who knows ?
  12. I only use ladder stands... I spent lots of years in hang ons, climbers, etc.. Now I do ladder stands only.. The lifeline adds a measure of safety while going UP or down, regardless of what kind of stand that you use.
  13. Just google up Prusik Knot Lifeline, Shawn....There is lots of info, both diagrams and videos.. Pretty easy to do, even for an old, fat white boy like me !!...<<grin>>... You can also buy them already made up from Sportsman's Guide and other places for less than $30..
  14. After many years of being "lucky" hunting from treestands, ( I have managed to avoid a gravity attack) I finally installed a lifeline with a Prusik knot on my ladder stand this morning.. The materials cost me about ten bucks at my local Amish "hardware" type store....Rope was 17 cents a foot and good heavy duty caribiners were $1.95 apiece... A small price to pay for more security while ascending and descending from my stand, when most falls take place.. Be safe out there, y'all....
  15. Go fishing..The smallmouth fishing is superb right now...Also, November is often the very best month for river walleyes.
  16. Hell, the next thing you know, the Bills will win the Super Bowl !! I would have bet a month's pay that Hilary would win.. I am, however, THRILLED that she lost !!
  17. Perhaps I missed something..I am NOT a math whiz despite working as an engineering tech for quite a few years.. However, just speaking from my own experience and that of some of my buddies, I have NEVER seen a rifle that grouped within 2 inches at 100 yards and then fanned them out at 8" at 200 yards.. Is this really a common phenomenon ? How many posters here who have done a fair amount of shooting from the bench from say, 100 to 300 yards have seen this kind of performance..?. In my experience, I have seen many rifles that grouped 2" at 100 and perhaps from 2" to 4" at 200 and maybe as wide as 8" to 10" at 300, but I never recall a rifle that grouped 2" at 100 and 8" at 200... Perhaps I have just led a sheltered life...
  18. No tables involved, my rifles that shoot 2" groups at 100 shoot appx 4" groups at 200 > That is from my experience shooting them, rather than going by any tables... Same with trajectories and drop...The results I get from shooting actual groups may be different than what the tables read... For instance, my pet load for my .280, zeroed 4" high at 100, prints 4" high at 200, 4" low at 300, and a foot low at 400.. I know that it does that from shooting groups at those ranges.. All I care is that I can hold mid ribcage out to 300 yards and be in the kill zone, and for an extreme range shot (for me) I can hold on the backline or just above and be in the kill zone. What could be simpler, as long as you are relatively adept at judging range...
  19. Not to sound the skeptic, but I would have to see some iron clad documentation to believe that picture is accurate and genuine..
  20. Their nuts were bigger, too....
  21. I hunted pheasants in Iowa a few times and I saw fox squirrels with bigger racks than that deer....<<ahem..>>...
  22. It is INDEED, Dinsdale, if you are hunting after dark.....<<grin>>....
  23. I have hunted from New Mexico north to Alaska east to Newfoundland and then back south to Georgia... I am not a long range specialist or an exceptionally good shot..In fact I SUCK at shooting offhand. However I have found that a rifle that groups around 2" from the bench at 100 yards is plenty accurate enough for the medium to big game hunting that I have done...I limit my shots to around 400 yards and seldom take a shot unless I have a dead steady shooting position... I have killed my fair share of game at distances from 100 to 400 yards and have hit a lot more than I have ever missed.. Rifles that shoot 1 " groups at 100 yards are nice..I have a couple....However, as a hunting rifle, a rifle that shoots a 2" group at the same range is just as effective a hunting implement at the ranges that most of us shoot game...
