  1. They would have to be scored as non-typicals......
  2. The worst thing they can do is say NO... I asked an aquanitance to day for permission to hunt ducks..He politely said no and then told me that he had granted permission in the past and the priveledge was abused.. Possibly that is true...Possibly he just doesn't want anybody else on his land, but he feels he needs a reason so he doesn't look like a selfish asshole. It doesn't matter..he owns the land and he pays the taxes.
  3. I ruined my most perfect day ever of duck shooting a few years ago on teal... I was watching a beaver pond that belonged to a neighbor of mine..... 3 mallards, two drakes and a hen, came in over the pond...I made the slickest triple you ever saw, busted both greenheads ( a right and a left )and dumped the hen as she was heading out. Then a drake woodie came cruising over and I dropped him. I was feeling pretty cocky by then....4 shots and 4 ducks stone dead on the water. I should have gathered them up and gone home. Unfortunately I got greedy and decided to stay... Six teal buzzed me....Then they buzzed me again. I missed them six times... I gathered up my ducks and went home...Should have quit when I was ahead ( or at least even).... I ended up 4 ducks for 10 shots.....<<sigh>>....
  4. There was a website address on the goose bands... Nothing too exotic <<sigh>>..... Both birds were females...Both were banded near Corning ( about 15 miles away)..One was at least a year old when it was banded in 2014, the other was a juvenile when it was banded in July of this year. There was not a dramatic difference in size between the two. Local golf course geese...hehehe..They are still fun to shoot and make a very satisfying SPLAT when they hit the water from about 30 yards up...
  5. Never fired a shot at a duck..The only ducks we saw were a few teal, out of range and I probably couldn't hit the jet propelled little bastards anyway...<<grin>>.... My partner and I did get two honkers apiece...BOTH of the birds I killed were banded... Over the years I've shot perhaps 100 geese, and only got one banded bird...I am looking forward to turning the numbers in and learning where and when they were banded.
  6. That is a great thing about DIY trips...The planning, research, and anticipation is a huge part of the trip. The hunt itself is great, but you BLINK and it's over.....Then you have the memories, pictures, etc....
  7. I'm going...A buddy of mine and I had a place all picked out to put a spread of decoys on the river... Unfortunately, the river is blown out due to the recent rain, and if we shot a duck over the river near Corning, we'd have to drive to Elmira to retrieve it. So were are going to puddle jump a few local ponds and hope to luck into a few..
  8. I guess I was lucky, Dan.....The NWT trip was one of those rare trips that went without a single hitch, either on our end or on the outfitter's. If was my hunt of a lifetime, for several reasons.. In 1998 we did a Quebec fly in with 13 guys ( for 2 camps)....Once again, no problems on our end, but the outfitter had problems keeping up his end...He did not own his own airplanes and when we needed to be moved due to lack of caribou, the guy that he chartered his planes from did not have any available. After that, I made sure that my outfitter owned his own airplanes.
  9. Biz....In 1994, I did exactly that on a guided, fully outfitted caribou hunt in Northwest Territories. The camp took 10 hunters at a time and I got a good price break for filling the entire camp. It was the most elaborate, exotic hunt I have ever been on..Great food, genuine INUIT guides ( who were a hoot), thousands of caribou and world class light tackle fishing for lake trout, northern pike and grayling. Everybody killed 2 big bulls that week, several of which made B&C for Central Canada Barren Ground caribou.. Two of the guys even shot wolverines. Incredible hunt. We were hunting about 50 miles south of the Arctic Circle.
  10. Whatever odds that you find in the lower 48 for goats or sheep will be slim at best, preference points or not. Last I checked goat hunting was still relatively reasonable in Alaska, and over the counter in most areas. Sheep ( Dall) is also over the counter in many units in AK, but the $$$$$ are substantially higher than goat hunts.
  11. Twenty years ago the Mulchatna Herd was in it's heyday. You could fly right out of Anchorage and reach the Mulchatna in about two hours. Populations are way down now in the Mulchatna Drainage. That means more flying time and more money, because the herds are farther away. The last few years much of the DIY hunting has been done out of Kotzebue...
  12. The winter caribou hunts are much less expensive. However, the chances of getting a good rack are much less, it's a LOOONG drive, often on snow covered roads, and it can be colder than a well digger's butt. Fly in hunts in late August and September when you have a good chance of a wallhanger, are starting at about 6K and going up. Probably the the least expensive way to get a good bull now is a DIY Alaska hunt, but those take a lot of research , planning, and require that you have the skills and gear to camp in the wilderness and butcher and pack your own meat, capes, etc. It is also more logistically difficult and expensive to bring your meat home.
  13. Damn flatlanders !!.....<<GRIN>>....
  14. It depends on whose money I'm spending...
  15. My beam balance powder scale is a Herter's along with some of my other reloading accessories that I still use. It was an entertaining catalog to read, with extensive write-ups on HERTER'S products and how wonderful they were. I had a 1966 Herter's catalog too, but, like many other things I lost track of it after my divorce.
  16. I picked Pygmy because I am vertically challenged and Shorty, Midget, and Runt were all taken... My female friends call me Dan or Danny...Most of my male friends call me Clarkie...
  17. Good score ! I had one similar in stainless...Very well made and accurate. Unfortunately, I swapped it a 1911 .45, which I also no longer have..
  18. I am thinking 2006 or 2007.. Anybody got some firm data ?
  19. Congrats, Nick ! The pup's doing great !
  20. Never saw a prettier gobbler ! The hunter ain't too shabby either...<<blush>>..... And I AIN'T talking about Wooly.....hehehehe.....
  21. WOW !! WET CLEANUP.....PYGMY'S COMPUTER ROOM !!... Congrats to both of you !! Fine birds and a great job !!
  22. I haven't shot slugs through a smoothbore in close to 30 years, but when I did use them I shot them through a scope mounted 20 gauge skeet gun, and I had my best accuracy AND terminal performance with Brennekes. They were relatively accurate ( pie plate at 75 yards) and held together and penetrated better than foster type slugs.
