I probably know more about firearms than Joe average deer hunter... However there are many members on this forum that have forgotton more than I will ever know, Airedale, Buckmaster7600, and Wildcat Junkie just to name a few. This forum is for hunters more than " Rifle Looneys" and gun nuts, which is fine. I frequent a couple of more technically oriented firearms on which I seldom post , because I feel ( and I AM). ignorant compared to many of the members there . I mostly listen and hope to learn something

Nice post and nice bucks, Biz.... I haven't missed opening day in 52 years, but your Dad sure has me beat on bucks ! My Old Man was not much of a deer hunter. Although I know he killed a few in his younger years, I never remember him bringing home a deer. He would much rather hunt rabbits or his favorite, coon... Actually, so would I...I guess the nut doesn't fall very far....

So UPTOWN, what did you do as a child, other than pull wings off flies ?

Let's see, being in the military, hanging around gun clubs and interfacing with many people who are interested in firearms and ballistics for the last 60 years or so probably had something to do with it.. Some hunters are interested in a firearm just as a tool to use to pursue their sport. Others are equally as interested in the technical side of firearms as well.. By the time I was 15 ( which was LONG ago) I could recite bullet weights and velocities from published ballistic charts of nearly all the factory loaded centerfire rifle cartridges loaded in the US.

Cool...! If they had been chambering the CDL in the Whelen back when I was looking for one ( about 20 years ago) I'd have bought one ..

I made a nearly perfect Texas heart shot one time on a wounded doe. She jumped up out of a weed field and had one foreleg busted where it joined body her , just flapping away. She ran right straight away and the only shot I had was right at her butt. I was shooting a 20 gauge 1100 with a 1.5X weaver scope and brenneke slugs. The slug entered right in the "taint" halfway between the anus and that thing that bucks like so well. She didn't go far. The lungs were shot up but there was no exit hole, so I guess the slug came out with the heart/lungs when I dressed her. And it was NOT a pleasant job gutting her.

You may need to look around for one a bit...There might be a Rem 700 Classic around.. Is anybody making a bolt Whelen these days (other than the custom/semi-custom stuff )? At one time I was in the market for a Whelen, but you don't run across one every day.. I finally gave up looking and bought a 9.3 x 62, because they were available in presently manufactured rifles, abeit imports such as Tikka and CZ.

Buckmaster7600 (aka Stubby) explained it wonderfully, in technical jargon, which he is very knowledgeable about.. I'll try to explain it in layman's terms. Both use the same bullets, but the Whelen case holds a lot more powder. The .35 rem is an excellent deer cartridge out to about 150 yards and kicks less even in light carbines. The Whelen is an excellent big game cartridge on game as large as moose and elk out to about 300 yards. It is perfectly capable of cleanly killing the largest North American Game, including the big bears and kicks more than the .35 Rem. If you shoot a deer with either chambering at 75 yards they will be equally dead, given proper shot placement.

At least he isn't showing off his bony knees !

Dave Petzal said in one of his books..." The effect of a heavy , medium caliber bullet on game has to be seen to be appreciated". I believe that a 200 to 250 grain .35 caliber bullet would be considered a heavy medium caliber bullet.

Sorry, I can't help you, Pointman..Due to the M1s top loading, you are limited to either a port side mounted scope ( very awkward, )or perhaps a LER scope mounted ahead of the receiver.. I have no experience, nor interest in carrying around a rifle with either of those scope mounting options.

How many lever fans out there .35 marlin for me

Considering the spirals on the mag tube, the rifle was likely a Rem M14 or M141... -

Naaaw !! Everyone knows you can't kill a deer with less than a 3X9 variable and 3000 fps muzzle velocity...<<grin>>... -
About 400 acres in 8X, and about the same amount in 8T. I also have several friends who have offered me access to their properties, but a person can only hunt so much land. Actually I do probably 90% of my hunting on a parcel of 107 acres in 8X( Tuscarora) and another parcel of 100 acres in 8T (Rathbone)...

They start yarding when the snow gets about feet deep...You have a while to wait for that..I hope...<<grin>>...

Late getting in on this...... CONGRATS on losing your bow cherry !! Nice job, my friend.....ENJOY !!

Rack attack...I admit I use a poor analogy.. Just like you made a faulty assumption. I grew up on family owned land and have owned land all of my life, and believe me, I know all about maintaining property and paying taxes.

The 25-06 with a 117-120 grain bullet has ballistics similar to the .270 win with a 130 grain bullet, which is a proven performer on medium game like deer and black bear, and has taken it's fair share of bigger game up to the size of moose and elk. It is an excellent deer cartridge...Is it perfect for black bear ? Probably not, but it will certainly do the job with good shot placement. It is probably not the ideal choice for a dedicated bear rifle, but I wouldn't hesitate shooting the biggest black bear with it, given a good shot opportunity.

Hair doesn't retard blood leakage much. Fat does and fall bears have lots of it. It does not result in a slower death, but it often results in a very sparse blood trail.

I like "not working" very much myself... After about 45 years of gainful employment, I adjusted to retirement VERY quickly...<<grin>>...
