  1. The 7.62 x 39 is about the same power level as a 30-30, certainly adequate for deer at close to moderate range. It is a MUCH better choice for deer than the .30 carbine.....
  2. Way to go, Larry !! After you left here Sunday I felt bad because I did not ask what rifle you were using Monday...Now I know ....Nice shooting.... I see the ramp works well too....
  3. Those 760s have a rep for being good shooters.. They were popular with PA hunters because with the detachable box mag they were handy to load while pointing out a truck window....<<GRIN>>.... Good score, my friend....Try some plain Jane Rem corelocts in 150 grain, and if they don't group as well as you like, try them in 180 grain... Chances are, one or the other, or more likely BOTH will group well.. If they don't there are about a bazillion other 30-06 factory loads for you to try, and most any of them will work just fine if applied to the vital areas of a deer....Or moose.....or bear....etc. etc....
  4. Thanks, Larry....I really appreciate that sentiment....<< BIG GRIN>> ...!!!!
  5. Well, I have been fortunate to have killed a couple of deer this season.. The first one was shot with the sporterized Springfield 03A3 30-06 that I bought about a year ago from my Good Buddy Gus, who passed away last July.. The second was shot with my main go-to whitetail rifle, a M700 Rem Mountain Rifle in 7mm08... I have room for one more in the freezer...I think it's time to take the Garand M1 hunting....She's not a cherry, because I killed a doe with her a few years back, but she hasn't had much action lately.... I have one more DMP left....<<SMILE>>.....
  6. Back in lead shot days I never used shot any HEAVIER than #4 and often used #6 or 7 1/2 shot on puddlers... Velocity did not seem to matter much...Standard velocity field loads worked fine. Steel is a whole different game..I never use any steel SMALLER than #2 and the higher velocity the better. I have had by far the best luck with an IC tube in a single barrel gun, although I have also done well with IC/Mod in my O/U.... My favorite load in my 12 gauge 3" guns is Kent Fasteel ( 1 1/8oz.) with #2 shot for ducks and BB shot for honkers...
  7. Dan, my friend...You may be barking up the wrong tree... The 7mm08 is indeed a light kicker in a standard weight rifle ( 7-8 pounds)... However, buying an ultralight rifle kind of defeats your purpose if you are trying to reduce recoil...
  8. Hehehehehe...Not many people weigh the little ones... I'm, guessing that Yellow Barn is pretty close....
  9. Nope....the word " REALLY" was the only one I intended to say loud...Like I would have if we were conversing in person..
  10. I just checked the current regs, and bear season is not open during deer season in WMU 3A, where I generally hunt, this year..However, it was open the first week of buck season in 3A for several years previous. In several WMUs, it is open this year during deer season...
  11. Oh REALLY ?? You better check your regs again...For several recent years, Bear season has been open in several GMUs the first week of buck rifle season.. Not sure about this year, because I opted not to hunt PA this year, but for several recent years in the unit directly across the border from me here in south central Steuben County, the bear season has been open the first 6 days of buck season... Until this year I have hunted in PA for 30 some years.....
  12. hehehehehe...Nope....I was on a log road that led DIRECTLY downhill to the truck, and I had an atv at my disposal... I DID hear some shooting from the direction that the bear went a few minutes later...I am hoping that someone killed the bear of a lifetime.. It was opening day of PA deer/bear season and if the bruin kept traveling through open woods, there is a pretty fair chance that he would go past someone else... Whether THEY had a bear tag or not did not concern me..I was not about to jeapordize MY hunting priveledges just to correct somebody elses screw up..
  13. Never feel guilty for obeying the game laws...You had good reason to at last HOPE that one of your buddies with a buck tag might get a chance at that buck... I had something similar happen a few years back in PA.. The biggest black bear I have ever seen hobbled past me 30 yards away on 3 legs, with one foreleg obviously smashed and bleeding from a gunshot. I did not have a bear tag ( I want a bear like I want another hole in my head) but my partner had a tag. I would have loved to finish the bear off, but held fire due to not having a tag, and hoped someone else would get the bear and put it out of it's misery. I felt bad for the bear and wished I had bought a tag, but I never for a minute felt guilty for not breaking the law, an act that might have cost me $$$$ just to euthanize an animal that I had no desire to possess...Just one of those things that happens... Who knows, perhaps old Yogi survived the wound...
  14. Nice shots Curmudgeon... I like ALL birds of prey, but owls are special.. I have been fortunate enough to see a couple of great greys on my Alaska hunts..
  15. I killed my first Thanksgiving Day buck in 1968.. For most of my hunting life I would not THINK of missing Thanksgiving morning...Always lots of hunters out and the deer are moving.. I guess I'm getting old....Considering that rain was forecast this morning, and I would have had to left the woods by mid morning at the latest to cook the turkey, I decided not to hunt today..Might be the first time in 50+ years I wasn't out.. The good news is that I am retired and still have the rest of the season to hunt.. Most of my hunting nowadays involves deer moving on their own rather than hunting escape routes to take advantage of hunter movement, so T-Day is really not that big of a deal anymore.. Good luck, y'all.....
  16. DAYUM, Stoney, ya ruined the best part !! Good shootin', Partner !! hehehe......
  17. I see some of my old buddy Maytom's work there....<<smile>>...
  18. An inch or two here in southern Steuben, along the Pennsyltucky border.. A few drifts here and there...
  19. Geeze, Larry..you really creeped me out for a minute.. I thought you had a tick on your POUCH......
  20. Why in the world would anybody soak venison in water ?... Small game and perhaps gamebirds to draw the blood out of the shot wounds, but venison ? Never heard of such a thing...
  21. Hehehehe....Rule of thumb..If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer...
  22. TF....I called him a socktucker....or a corksocker... or SOMETHING like that.. It didn't faze the little trespasser...He just sat there in my chair like a basketball-sized pincushion and stared at me with his beady little eyes....
  23. Pygmy

    Wind!

Hehehehehe..Too hairy for this old coot..I plan to sleep in tomorrow morning and cook a big breakfast for The Mermaid, my Canadian guest and myself ... I've been "around the horn" too many times to go out in THAT stuff....
  24. Zuke...They may very well be good eating, but I'll bet they are a PAIN to skin....<<grin>>... I have eaten beaver, coon, and woodchuck and enjoyed all three. You skin a porky for me and I'll cook it and we can both give it a try !
