  1. He's a handsome devil, Paula....<<GRIN>>.... The more you get him out, the better he'll become.. Great thing about beagles is that they require no real training.. You just get them around rabbits and let nature take it's course
  2. Yeah, but those big, fire breathing magnums have so much more KNOCKDOWN POWER !!..... What about all of those foot pounds of ENERGY ?? Oh dear, now I am SO confused...!!
  3. For one thing, gobblers usually announce thier presence in the spring by gobbling. Fall flocks in wooded areas often require a good bit of shoe leather to locate.
  4. I never ate a doe I didn't like. To me, meat from a fawn tends to be bland ( like veal)... Adult does yield considerably more meat than fawns, and I have never had an issue with does being tough. I prefer not to kill the older, matriarch does because I believe they are important leaders of the deer herd in any given area. SOOO, given a choice, I generally try to shoot a medium size doe... 1.5 to 2.5 year old does are just fine with me...
  5. Geeze, 7600... I might be your Daddy... Ballistic tips were MY favorite game bullet also until I started shooting Barnes.. I killed a bunch of deer sized game with them, along with about 10 bull caribou, mostly 7MM 140 grain in my .280 Rem., but some with my 7MM08, also 165 grain in a 30-06.
  6. Basically the same as a Nosler Ballistic Tip. Great deer bullet and generally very accurate...Sounds like a good deal to me. If your rifle shoots other stuff close to an inch, I'm betting these will shoot that well if not better.
  7. Thanks for the lesson in trajectory and ballistics, LJC.. I know I just learned a lot. Now if we can just get that silly 7600 dude to understand it.....
  8. I'm having a great time reading the chatter and waiting for one of the youngsters to SMOKE one... Good luck to ALL !
  9. Good luck !!...Hunt safe !! Shoot straight..!!
  10. I'm available if anyone wants to take me out.. I'll shave extra close that morning, paint some freckles on my face with brown shoe polish, wear my camouflage beany with the propeller on top, my knee high pants with suspenders, and have a slingshot hanging out of my back pocket. Oh, and I almost forgot...My P F Flyers..!!... That oughta fool the fish cops !
  11. The MN is a a robust and accurate battle rifle, and the 7.62 X 54 is a very capable round for most any game in North America. However, the split receiver tends to make conventional scope mounting somewhat problematic. If you want to hunt deer with your MN, I would recommend practicing with the existing open sights. There are options for mounting optical sights, and you might explore them with a search on some of the military rifle forums.. Good luck !
  12. DANG, TF....It has been a long time, but as I remember it, most of them cooled down for a week or so about every three weeks...
  13. Don't worry Growie....Some of the "vets" like you and me realize that the damn deer can't read a calendar... Neither can turkeys in the spring, but it seems like every year someone is worried about "something" happening before or after it is "supposed' to happen..
  14. Not to mention MR. Pandora might object to your fooling around with his wife's box....
  15. Pronghorn hunting is a blast !! Lots of animals, lots of stalk opportunities and you don't need a guide to be successful. I have had good results by going through a booking agent. Try Butch Manasse Outdoors Adventures. They will find you a good hunt within your budget, and will also help you with tags, rentals and other arrangements. It costs you no more to go through a booking agent than to book on your own.. Their profits come from the outfitters for drumming up business for them.
  16. Nice picture, Matt...You nailed it, that is a northern harrier...There are two color phases, a grey and a brown, but they are fairly easy to ID because of their long, pointed wings, long tail and distinct white rump patch..You most often see them flying low over over the fields. They are very common , at least in my area down here in southern Steuben County.
  17. Happy Birthday !! Anybody named after a beer can't be ALL bad !....<<grin>>.....
  18. Yeah, she could fit the Pharoah's Tomb, the crown jewels, and still have room to stuff the Hope Diamond right up the middle..
  19. Nice shootin !...Congrats, Big fella...!
  20. She should have stuffed the jewelry down between her butt cheeks... The crooks would NEVER have found it there !
  21. You can't beat a 1.5 to 3X scope for fast target acquisition at woods ranges... I shot many deer with my shotguns from 1965 until they made rifles legal here in Steuben and never used scope over 2.5X. I have also shot a lot of game with my rifles and fixed 4X scopes at ranges out to 400 yards with no problems concerning target acquisition...I am not saying that a 4X scope is the BEST tool for long range shooting, but I am saying that it will get the job done at extended ranges and often is a better choice at "normal" ranges than higher powered scopes.
  22. Sorry...Can't get rid of this damn underline.. I have not shot this load at 300,, But I think it would be 8" to 12 " low at 300... I'm betting that if you had a 300 yard shot, holding on the back line or showing just a red CH above it would put you in the kill zone.. I'm not too worried about it since my max shot will be perhaps 250, and I am sure that a high ( but not off hair) shot would do the trick.
  23. Better turn up your furnace..Obviously Hell froze over...
