So sorry, Zem...It's tough to lose a pet.
-
You'd kill 'em alright... If a deer saw me in a tree with a monstrosity like that, he'd probably die LAUGHING !..<<grin>>.... Of course my last bow was a stick and a string with an arrow tipped with a rubber suction cup. I mounted reel on it and used to practice "catch and release" bowhunting.

DANG !! Those contraptions sure have gotten UGLIER since I quit bowhunting..!

This thread reminds me that I need to perfect that new invention I have been working on..... Scratch-N-Sniff bicycle seats...

You don't THROW dynamite...You carefully submerge it to the depth you want and then connect the wire leads to a detonator... Dang amateurs !
-
Wrong lake, Real... Fortunately for us, Keuka still has enough depth to set out a gill net...
-
Cool stuff, Grampy ! You're the one in the middle, right ?....

Somewhere between 100 and 120.......He won't make NYS Big Buck Club for bow... Real PURTY buck, though !

Very doubtful that any US Krags saw any use in WWII. They are Spanish American War vintage..Some saw duty in fighting Phiilpino guerillas shortly after the turn of the 20th century, but the Krag actually saw a short period as the standard US battle rifle...It was replaced in 1903 by the '03 Springfield, which was basically a variant of the Mauser and was superior to the Krag, both in it's cartridge and other features, such as clip loading rather than the Krag's slower magazine loading with loose cartridges. Many OLDER battle rifles were used in WWII because there were not enough M1 Garands ( adopted in 1936) to go around, but they were mostly 1903 Springfields or variants thereof, or 1917 "Enfields", which chambered the same round as the M1 (30-06) and were superior battle rifles to the Krag.

Looked like nice figure in the buttstock for an inexpensive gun...Sounds like you got a good deal.

Nice shotgun, kpkot....What is it ?

Call 911 !... One of them just ran over my TONGUE !

30 inches ?? That would one TALL bobcat.. I think landtrac is right..It's one of them there pumacougars that the DEC has been clandestinely releasing. I think I got a glimpse of the black stealth helicopter in the background.

I got Bilbo's homeless cousin, Dildo Bugger, to build one for me... All he wanted in exchange was a quart of Red Cat and a hooker....Being the nice guy that I am I threw a king size package of Slim Jims ... It looks kinda like a dumpster with some old warn out venetian blinds sticking out the top for cover... In fact it IS a dumpster with some old venetian blinds sticking out the top for cover.. I'm sure it will work fine after the deer get used to it..It should be a DYNAMITE bear blind also. All I need to do now is find someone with a forklift to take it up on the hill next to my food plot.

I am not disputing the fact that the .257WM is an extremely flat shooter or the fact that it is a highly effective game killer. I am just saying that most any centerfire rifle could make as impressive a kill as the one in the video with a CNS or shoulder shot. The title of the video appeared to be touting the KNOCKDOWN power of the cartridge.. I am saying that a deer shot in the neck vertebrae with a .222 rem will go down just as fast one shot in the neck vertebrae with a .257WM.
-
After watching the video a couple of times, it really looks to me like the deer was hit with a neck shot....Once again, nothing against the .257 WM, but with a hit like that, a 30-30 ( or even a .223) would have resulted in just as impressive a kill.
-
Cool video....Nothing against the .257 WM, however, not knowing where the bullet struck the deer, it really doesn't prove anything about "knockdown power".. About 50 other cartridges would give the same results if the deer was hit in the CNS ( brain or spine) or in the shoulders. If the shot was a dead center double lung shot ( no CNS or major major skeletal damage) it would indeed be impressive.

Sounds like it still has it's original 30" BBL and probably it's original front sight... Be sure to shoot it off the bench a few to establish the correct point of aim..Many military rifles with the rear sight at the lowest seeting shoot several inches high at 100 yards. This is the " battle sight" and is designed so that you could hold mid- body on a man from 100-300 yards and still hit him somewhere in the torso. At woods ranges for deer it is not a big issue as long as you hold fairly low on the ribcage... The important thing is learning where your point of impact is at the ranges you expect to shoot..
-
A fine heirloom, TF.... The military stock has been sporterized, but the metal hasn't been altered, as far as I can see...How long is the barrel ? Unless it's 30 inches the barrel has been cut down and possibly the front sight replaced. It looks like a fine old warhorse...I hope you kill a deer or two with it this year. It is a fine chambering for whitetails...The power level is about midway between a 30-30 and a 30-06....

Wife's co-worker fell out of a tree yesterday setting up a stand
Pygmy replied to Core's topic in General Hunting
Bummer....I hope the fellow recovers from his injuries... Those "gravity attacks" are a bitch... I have always managed to avoid them, but a number of my friends have had them.. Fortunately none of them were seriously injured, but they certainly could have been. One guy was about 20 feet up ( no harness) and he suffered a fainting spell...He woke up lying on the ground at the base of the tree right NEXT to a rock pile..Fortunately he suffered only scrapes and bruises. -
Moogie...Are you saying you want a boner ring ? Oh, silly me, I meant a BOONER ring.....<<BLUSH>>.....
-
Damn, Wooly....!!..That is just slicker than a finger in the .....well....errr...never mind.....
-
BTW, Real....It IS a real cool knife.... Rugged and functional....Who know what the history might be....?.. I have a number of military artifacts that were no doubt used by soldiers, American, German, Japanese, British, Russian.... I often wonder about the soldiers who used them and what fate they may have suffered...
-
No, Moogie, not hot enough Sunday for the lizard skin thong... I was just wearing my standard, boring " Fruit of the Looms" colored brown of course, to match the skid marks....
